This is my understanding of the timeline. The girls are seen on Brovan st by camera at 12:19. Mr. Carpenter who is outside watering his lawn sees the girls ride past at 12:30-1:00. Mr. Gamerdinger swerves and misses the bikes at 12:20 ish. Mr. Gamerdinger makes a call from his cell from the restroom at the entrance to the lake at 12:27. At 2:00 the girls bikes are found at the gate south side of lake. At 3:58 it is indeed confirmed that the bikes belong to the girls.

But I'm not sure we can definitely say Mr. C saw the girls at 12:30-1:00.

ELLIE JOSTAD, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER: Well, Nancy, Mr. Carpenter told "The Des Moines Register" that he was out watering his yard. He says it was sometime between noon and 3:00 o`clock when he saw the girls ride by.

Now, he`s a little closer to the lake. He`s about two blocks or so away from Meyers Lake. He says at the time, he didn`t think anything of it. And it wasn`t until he learned the girls were missing that he noticed -- you know, he maybe saw them that afternoon."

I vaguely recall a news clip of Rick Abben answering a question from someone in the crowd, saying "No one has been cleared".

Anybody else remember that?

Yes, but I got tired of looking for links so I didn't follow up on this. Let me look for it now.

Somebody posted this case in an early thread:

http://murderpedia.org/female.J/j/johnson-angela.htm

In 1993, she and her boyfriend tortured and killed 5 people, including two children in IA in order to thwart a meth case. The bodies were not discovered until 2000.

In this case, one scenario I have considered is that DM got wind of an unspecific threat and pulled his plea agreement suddenly to avert it. I think it is possible a killer could have stalked and killed dear Lyric to stop his testimony, get revenge, and send a message to him and other narcs. Even without a body, all the publicity could have sent a message to the drug community who guessed or knew about Dan's plea deal. If the message is one that is meant to truly memorable and shocking, killing innocent girls would do it. Fear of consequences of narc-ing keeps a lot of people quiet, whether their brains are fried on meth or not. Rumors of who may be a narc are also common in drug users. If a user/dealer hears DM is narc, his poor child gets murdered or even goes missing, well that would make an impression. In this scenario, little Elizabeth would have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I don't this this this the only possibility by any stretch though.

It's all so terribly sad to contemplate.

Four days before the girls went missing, Lyric ran away for awhile to Greenbrier park. Does anyone know if the bike trail runs through this park?

Isn't Greenbrier Park in Waterloo?

I think so, but I can't find it on the map.

I think if you type in George Wyth Lake you will find it, its in the Green Briar division of Waterloo, then map it to Myers Lake. Did that a while ago but didn't save it, think its a bit of a distance but can't remember.

She didn't run away to Greenbrier park. Those are 2 separate incidents:

1) She got in a huge fight with Dan, packed her bags, and was about to walk out the door when Grandma Wylma stopped her and talked her into not running away.

2) On a different day, she was late coming home from the park with her older cousin and everyone freaked out, assumed some foul play was going on, and called the police. They hung up the phone with the police as the girls came walking up the drive way.

If they were the girls bikes, which I believe they were, then TG had to of just missed seeing, or hearing the abduction.

The cyclist was at the SE tip of the lake at 12:20 ish (per his phone call on the other side of the lake after using the washroom).

It doesn't seem possible, according to police timelines, that the cyclist saw bikes belonging to the two children.

“Today marks two months since the disappearance of 11-year-old Lyric Cook and 9-year-old Elizabeth Collins,” Rick Abben, chief deputy at the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, said in a statement Thursday. “Both girls were last seen on July 13 at 12:15 p.m. riding their bicycles away from the Collins residence in Evansdale. We have information that the girls were seen approximately 12:23 p.m. on Brovan Blvd. and between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m. on Gilbert DR. in the area of Meyers Lake in Evansdale.

...

“Law enforcement is asking for anyone that was in the Arbutus Ave. or Gilbert Dr. and Elmer Ave. areas or anywhere in Evansdale on that day that may have seen the girls to notify us,” he said.”

Let's just say the bikes were not the girls. Okay so two bikes laying across the bike path at the gates entrance right where the girls bikes were later found along the fence, were somebody elses bikes and that somebody was right where the girls scent was noticed by the dogs, and where the purse was found. And then the girls bikes really show up, and it is their bikes. UGH!

Were there two bikes on the trail that day?

Very early in the case, Abben actually did say that some people were cleared:

Abben said the sex offender interviews led to no new information.

"Everyone has been cleared," Abben said. "We have no concerns with that."

http://www.courierpress.com/news/2012/jul/17/bc-us--missing-cousins-iowa-2nd-ld-writethru631/

I believe local sex offenders are the only people LE has ever stated were "cleared".

This is another thing I find incredibly ironic...the local sex offenders are the only people LE has cleared, yet Drew, Heather, and Tammy have all stated they feel it was a sex offender who took the girls. :waitasec:

What makes them think it was a sex offender? The general theory that "this is what sex offenders do?"

Yes it is.

Maybe they are actually referring to Tibbits park. Its south of the Greenbrier addition, along Cedar Bend street. It would only be a block or so from Tammys house.

The above article is from July 19, 2012. In it Rick Abben is quoted as saying "Everyone is suspect until we find something".

Not sure if this was before/after the RSO's were cleared?

The article I linked about the RSO's was dated July 17, so your article is after that.

Here is a comment from Kent Smock about the DCI Sex Offender Team:

Chief Smock told KWWL sex offender teams from the state Division of Criminal Investigation are helping interview people of interest, but he says no one has been detained and those interviewed are not any closer to being suspects than anyone else.

On the other hand, he says no one's been cleared of suspicion, either.

I remember the debates in the first threads about the likelihood of there being two sets of bikes left alone at approximately the same spot at two different times. The consensus was IIRC that the odds were against it. It would seem that LE would just say there were two sets of bikers and the bikes TG swerved around did not belong to the girls. IMO

Unless it was someone LE did not know was a SO because they hadn't been caught yet or if they had offended out of state and didn't register when in IA.

I have to believe the family feels SO because of something they have been privy to that we haven't. Or maybe they are like us, back and forth, trying to fit the pieces together like us.

Let's face it. It becomes increasingly unlikely nowadays that you will ever hear LE say someone has been completely cleared until they have the person who did commit the crime in custody and charged. MOO
