I don't know if I shared this with you all before, but if I did I don't remember. The reason why I'm so passionate about this case is not only because it is close to home and there are two children involved but also because of what happened to me when I was about Lyric's age. SanDiego, California in the late mid 70's, I was a carefree kid, would walk a mile to take the transit bus to the beach alone on many occasions, rode my bike blocks maybe miles from my house. Walked many many blocks thru rough neighborhoods to school and back. I guess you could say I was street smart.

One occasion while on my way to school alone not but a block away from my house, a red pinto car pulled up along side me, a man rolled down his window and asked me if I wanted to make a some money. I ran home and told my dad. Another time on my way to the store for my mom again alone a truck pulled up with two men in it and asked if I would f..k them. Remember I was only 10. I ran home.

When I was 13 my mom had a yard sale and I was watching it for her, I had on my bikini which was very common to run around in in California. A man pulled up in a VW bug, and approached me with a smile. He talked to me for awhile then said how beautiful I was and that he works for Sports Illustrated magazine as a photographer and that he wanted to take my picture. I was so excited, and took his buisness card,I told him I would have to ask my mom first. He said, "sure I will talk to her also if you want me to". He left and said we would meet again soon. My mom and dad threw a fit and said no way was I going to this guys place and have pictures taken. I gave my mom his buisness card that he gave me. On the card his name was Ted. Yup, it was Ted Bundy the serial killer. I will never forget that day, we didn't find out who he was until much later, he had already gotten arrested. I wish I kept that buisness card.

Holy crap! :what:

Going back to the "way back" wasn't there a video in question from a bank?
Plausible IMO. I would guess banks have many cameras. :waitasec:

There was plenty of cctv footage that LE have gone through, from all over town.

The problem was (is) that they didn't know what to look for.

This seems to circle back to a lack of information coming from the townsfolk despite many requests.

Dated Missing Iowa girls' abductor likely on video, investigator says
4:13 PM, Sep 6, 2012

Officials open e-mail account to solicit tips about missing Evansdale girls
Authorities leading the search for two missing Iowa cousins believe those involved in the abduction used a vehicle that likely was recorded on surveillance camera.
However, officials say they need more information from the public about what to look for in the hours of surveillance footage they have collected.
Cousins Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, and Elizabeth Collins, now 9, went missing from the northeastern Iowa town of Evansdale on July 13.
They were last seen by their grandmother riding their bicycles at about 12:15 p.m. Their bikes were found later that afternoon on a recreational trail at nearby Meyers Lake.
In the eight weeks since the girls disappeared, investigators say they’ve found few clues that may lead to Lyric and Elizabeth’s whereabouts.
“It is almost certain that the person or persons involved in this abduction used a vehicle to arrive and depart from the area, and it is believed that surveillance video is likely to have recorded that vehicle,” Charis Paulson, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation wrote in an email to law enforcement officials and state employees.
“Regardless of whether the person(s) responsible for taking Elizabeth and Lyric reside, work, or have acquaintances in the area, or possibly came to the area to commit a crime, it is virtually impossible for any person to live, travel, or exist in a vacuum,” Paulson wrote. “Someone knows something that might be valuable to law enforcement.”

This makes me wonder...if they have the girls on cctv on Brovan at 12.15, then why do they not appear on any other cctv footage?

Of course we don't know for certain that they don't appear, but I am fairly sure LE would have said "last seen at x on x" if they had.

See I wish they would let US look at the videos. And if there are any vehicles recorded, with hopefully a license plate at least partially visible, would they try to find that person to question them? I agree that there has to be something else recorded. Just wish I knew where other videos may have come from.

Maybe there is cctv footage, but it may be too grainy to be of any use. A lot of cameras are focused on entrances and exits of businesses and residences rather than the sidewalk or street. JMO.

I think my story kinda shows how child abduction attempts have been going on for along time. When my parents moved us to Iowa, they were thinking that it would be a much safer place to raise kids. But then in 1981 or 1982, Johnny Gosch, then soon after another paper boy goes missing. Large city to small town, you just never know.

Cindersoot, could you please repost your link of cycling along the bike trail in 9 minutes and the photo from the parking lot towards the drainage gate ... if you have them handy.

Thanks

has there been any updates in the case? Any perp of interest? Haven't been able to keep up to date.

Do you feel like you cheated death three times, or your guardian angel was watching out for you?

Early 80s?

... Maiden Lane stopped being a party spot in the early 80s because the highway was built ... Seven Bridges was a family recreation spot until 1993-1996 (appox years that bridge collapse).

Could this person be in his early 50s?

Maybe ... he started with boys in the 1980s, perhaps as an older teenager, got away with it (times were different), went to Seven Bridges Park for rec programs as a youth or with family (20-30 aged adult) and ... morphed into abducting two children at the age of 50 in 2012 ... taking them at Maiden Lane and leaving them at Seven Bridges County Park ... all in an afternoon.

There is nothing.

The bodies were found on December 5, 2012 and there has been no information about new DNA evidence.

I hope that it doesn't have to happen again for the perp to be caught.

While we wait:

Captain Abben and Canine Buck

Buck was the departments first K-9. He was a Golden Retriever.

The gentleman that trained Buck lived in Nebraska and trained canines for law enforcement and the military. The story that Captain Abben received, was that Buck was located on the front porch of a house in Alabama. Buck was tested and it was found that he had a very high "Hunt Drive." His trainer purchased Buck and took him back to Nebraska. Buck was then trained in Narcotic Detection and Tracking.

Captain Abben was the 3rd handler that Buck had assigned to him. His first handler left the department and his second handler changed divisions.

Buck was responsible for locating alot of illegal drugs and money in Black Hawk County.

Captain Abben and Canine Buck did a demonstration before a panel of District Court Judges and never had a problem getting a search warrant when they needed one after that. Buck's reputation was such, that Captain Abben only testified twice (by his recollection) in court. The defendants always pled.

Buck was well known with many school children as he and Captain Abben visited numerous schools and attended many civic organization meetings. Captain Abben believes he handed out close to 5,000 of Buck's "Sheriff's Star" cards during thier time together as partners.

When Buck needed a veterinarian, Captain Abben took him to Reilly & Kneeland who gave the County a reduced rate. The K-9 program is run solely with private donations. The Board of Supervisors at that time were so impressed with Buck's abilities that they budgeted money for him in the Sheriff's budget. That money was never touched.

Captain Abben states that on a personal note, Buck was the best dog that he and his wife ever had. His children fell in love with Buck. Other than just a few times, Buck was with Captain Abben nearly 24 hours a day.

Captain Abben and Buck were partners for 10 years. Buck was just about 14 years old when he had to be euthanized due to health reasons.

After Buck died, Captain Abben never requested another dog. He knew he could never replace him.

It was a great 10 years!
