Thanks for the thread, @Richrd.
Boy-oh-boy what a case. No winners here. Just sad, sad, sad.

From the article you cited in your post:

Court orders Ethan Orton undergo psychiatric evaluation as Motion for Competency is filed

Court reports say that the information proffered by Orton is sufficient to support a finding that there are reasonable grounds to believe he is suffering from a mental disorder, which in turn, would prevent him from appreciating the charge, understanding the proceedings, or assisting effectively in his own defense.

Trial delayed for teen accused of killing his parents in Cedar Rapids

The trial for the 17-year-old accused of killing his parents back in October in Cedar Rapids will be delayed.

It had been set to take place a week from Tuesday. Now, it’s unclear when the trial will take place.

The defense filed a motion nearly two weeks ago requesting the delay.

Orton’s attorneys say they’re still reviewing the case and depositions. His attorneys say they would like the new trial to happen after July of this year.

A Cedar Rapids teen accused of killing his parents nearly a year ago will not stand trial this month because the prosecution needs more time to get an expert opinion on whether the teen had diminished capacity at the time of the crime.

Sixth Judicial District Judge Ian Thornhill began the pretrial hearing Friday by saying he wasn’t inclined to delay the trial because he asked the prosecution and defense eight months ago to give him a realistic date and they chose Oct. 18. But he agreed to hear the prosecution’s argument.

More than 16 months after his parents were murdered, and he was found covered in blood outside, Ethan Orton will stand trial for the murder of Misty Slade and Casey Orton. Ethan Orton, now 18, was 17 at the time of the murders. Police responding to the scene say they found Orton outside when he admitted to killing his parents. Officers claim Orton told them he stabbed both of his parents, and used an axe on his mother when it appeared she was still alive.

Orton has undergone psychological evaluations while in custody and a judge has determined he is competent to stand trial. Last year, Orton's defense had notified the court they may rely on insanity or diminished responsibility at trial.

A sentencing date has been set for June 5 for the Cedar Rapids man who admitted to killing his parents two years ago.

Ethan Orton pleaded guilty just hours before he was set to go to trial on two counts of first degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents.
