GUILTY IA - Gabriel McFarland, 4 mos, dies of head trauma, Des Moines, 22 April 2014

  • #201
BBM.

I'm sure it will be an excruciatingly hard day for Rachel and Heidi McFarland, too. And Rebecca Garrett. Does anyone even remember them?

After all, Rachel and Heidi McFarland brought Gabriel home from the hospital, invested months of their lives, and thousands of dollars, and allowed themselves to have hopes and dreams about raising Gabriel, during MA's pregnancy. They embraced motherhood, and changed every aspect of their lives to prepare for, and receive Gabriel. They invested emotional energy in dreams for his present, and his future. They loved, and attentively mothered this child, and welcomed MA into their home to remain involved in Gabriel's life.

One of them quit a job she loved to be a stay at home parent. They cared for Gabriel as if he had grown inside them, and loved him and cared for him as his only parents for 3/4 of his life.

They sacrificed enormously, and loved this baby deeply. They have suffered deeply, and been tremendously disrespected. They are cast aside, invisible and disposable victims of this terrible tragedy, as if they were mere babysitters. An afterthought. They have lost a huge part of their lives and dreams in this entire situation, IMO.

And NO ONE even bothered to call them to tell them the baby they considered their son was dead. No one.

I hope they were invited to participate in a funeral or memorial service. I hope they weren't cut out of that part of Gabriel's brief life, too.

Rebecca Garrett is suffering, too. Gabriel's adoptive grandmother.

.

I hope Rebecca Garrett, and Heidi and Rachel McFarland can advocate as mothers, to make changes in Iowa law to prevent this entire situation from ever happening again. Their arms are empty on what should have been their first Mother's day, too. Let's not forget them. They matter. They are victims, too-- over and over, they have been victimized.

We have been told this thread is not about the adoption and that it went the way it did. IT was all legal and official.

Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community - View Single Post - IA - Baby Gabriel, 4 months old, found dead of apparent blunt force trauma

Everybody please note - this story is not about the adoption. That is a different story.

"This case is about the murder of an innocent child, by his father."

I don't like the spin this case has gotten since the beginning. This alone is about Markeya baby and baby gabriel for me.

The baby was also found wet.

Snipped and BBM.

I had not read he was wet. Wet, as in diaper wet? Or wet all over?

Do you have a link for that information? I'm curious.

My comment was in response to "the mother" suffering on Mother's day. Gabriel has 3 mothers who love him, right?

An infant's death this week has brought anguish to three mothers who each loved the 4-month-old as her own.

Rachel and Heidi McFarland are mothers, too. They are suffering, and they are victims. They are part of Gabriel's story and what happened, and they cannot be further disregarded as invisible. They matter. They are suffering, too.

Are they not "allowed" to be victims?

Beautifully stated. The system absolutely failed Gabriel and he deserves justice.

This tragedy came right after the Omaha trial of the nanny who killed Cash Bell by dropping him down stairs. His parents did everything right in trying to ensure safety and it still wasn't enough because a daycare center where the nanny previously worked failed to report an incident of child abuse. The daycare provider has been charged for failure to report it. The agony of the parents was so heart-wrenching, after their verdict the jurors asked the Judge if they could give them a hug.

When the system is broken, it absolutely needs to addressed.

If you think they are, That is fine. I have another opinion about them but at this point again I am just going to reiterate that this thread is about the crime against Gabriel and not about the adoption or anything to do with that.

There is no broken system here. Had the mcfarlands made sure their paperwork was filed then that child would have been theirs. Because they did not do their work the baby was legally given back to the mother.

I find your statement incredibly unfair.
The adoptive parents had a lawyer to process paperwork. What do you expect they could have done?

IT is not unfair it is factual. Their lawyer did not do the paperwork correctly. They should have been on it and known the timelines and made sure it was all in order. Whatever the case, Markeya legally obtained custody of her son there in cutting all ties to them.

It is all legal and final.

This article sounds like the adoption itself might be a separate criminal case.

The McFarland’s attorney, Jason Rieper says he can’t discuss the specifics of the case because of attorney-client privilege and also because he could be called as a witness in the criminal case.

But he does say this case was complicated by the fact that the biological parents are minors.

Doesn't get more final than this, considering the child is dead.

No it doesn't. That case is OVER. There is no adoption case open.

I don't think adoption could be a criminal case. If he is called as a witness, it's because he interacted with the bio parents.

The article says the bio parents had their own attorney and the adoptive parents also paid his fees. So their attorney would not have interacted directly with the bio parents, only with their attorney.

My thoughts will be with all three of the women who loved Gabriel tomorrow and shared a mother's bond with him.

JMO.

In my mind there does not have to be an either or. In my mind the only one who is undeserving of sympathy is the person who killed Gabriel.

Again.. this thread is about the DEATH of Gabriel not the adoption.

With all due respect, the child is dead so his adoption is a moot point. His biological father is accused not his adoptive parents.

I think the legal process that failed to protect any child from child abuse should be allowed to be discussed on this forum. I've asked a mod to weigh in. Perhaps we could have a separate thread for those of us who are interested in the topic and you wouldn't have to participate.

Have a nice day.

There was no child abuse from anyone except the father. If you want to discuss what a loser he is for killing his son, Have at it. His father is not accused he is CHARGED with first degree murder.

This thread is about the death of gabriel and not about the adoption. A mod already weighed in .

Stop with the adoption. This isn't about the adoption.

It appears that the adoption was complex. But regardless of who filed what on time, where, when and how, it doesn't change anything. The adoption is not open for discussion.

The baby died April 22. I would think there would have been a service of some sort by now and an obituary.

I just wonder if we can not find any record because his name could have been changed back.

We don't know what name Markeya gave him.
