As someone who has worn glasses all my life, I could not fathom leaving my glasses behind while going outside. Maybe Jake wasn't nearsighted, but glasses wearers out there will know, your glasses pretty much become a part of your face. In school or other times when I've gotten hit in the face, my first instinct was not if I was hurt, it was "where are my glasses? are they intact?"

I'm nearsighted. I'm not wearing my glasses right now, because by face is about 18 inches away from this screen. I could go outside without them. I wouldn't, but I could. I got glasses in the 1st Grade, but refused to wear them to school, until I got to high school. The only reason I started wearing them then is because they wouldn't let me drive a car without them. So I don't think it's particularly unusual for people not to wear their glasses all the time. Especially at that age.

I think this is a very unfair statement to the families of autistic children. We do our best to keep our children safe while dealing with the scrutiny we face from the public when our children goes missing.

“Using parent surveys, the researchers found that nearly half of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) attempt to wander or bolt from a safe, supervised place. More than half of these wandering children go missing – often into dangerous situations.

Importantly, the researchers found evidence that autism-related wandering does not stem from inattentive parenting. It also found that half of all parents had received no help or guidance on how to deal with the problem.”

Study Confirms: Autism Wandering Common & Scary

I sympathize with this post and its intentions. With that being said, I am the mother of 3 autistic-spectrum children whom I have (gratefully) never lost, and I would NEVER allow them to go out into 30 degree temps at night, alone. That's just me, of course. I don't think PaulR's post was insensitive. It was fact. We ARE responsible for our children, autistic or not. And grief is complicated. Anger is a known part of grief. We also do not know the back story of where all the anger is coming from, but it's certainly coming from somewhere. Just my opinion.

Jake Wilson's father: 'He's not suffering anymore, he's up with God'
Wilson's father and grandfather said Friday they're convinced of the identity of the remains after speaking with investigators who told them clothing and other evidence recovered from the scene is in line with what they were looking for.

"We're comforted in many ways that it has come to a conclusion," said Bruce Wilson, the teen's grandfather. "Wasn't the conclusion we wanted. He's with God. That's the way I feel."

It doesn't sound like this was a case of an autistic child wandering off, exactly. It sounds like they often let him go places on his own. So maybe the Dad disagreed with that decision or something? Who knows.

I would probably be looking for someone to blame if I was in his position too. It's tragic.

www.kearnsfuneralservice.com/obituaries/jake-allan-wilson This pretty much confirms what they are going to announce at the news conf. today. I do wonder why they are waiting so long for the memorial service. I can't help but wonder if more is going to come out at the conf. today. Either way I feel so bad for both of his parents/sides of the family. I'm sure Jake would be very sad to see that his parents seem to have a difficult time getting along with each other even though I do understand why. :(

Jake Wilson, teen with autism who disappeared months ago, will 'forever be loved,' family says in obituary

A service of remembrance has been set for Jake Wilson, the teenage boy with autism who disappeared from an eastern Iowa town more than four months ago.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Union High School gymnasium. Amid the search for Jake, human remains were found earlier this month in Wolf Creek in La Porte City, where he went on a walk the night he vanished.

"Jake has touched so many lives and will forever be loved," his family said in an obituary through Kearns Funeral Service.

Can't comment on if it is foul play. Ongoing investigation. Cause and manner of death undetermined.

Finding remains within a 1 mile of where the search was started. Won't comment on what the remains were that were found (type of body parts? :(). Yes the reporter actually asked that. Did find more remains since the original discovery. I can't hear all of the questions.

FBI agents (15) were helping with the investigation last week. That will diminish this week. Still not enough evidence to determine why and how he got there.

The 1st item found was 1100 feet from the railroad bridge and then continued downstream.
