Not to me, seems like they would get there as fast as they could. Seems unreasonable that they would set up an elaborate diversion and then go search.

Are you referring to the fact that the PC was scheduled yesterday? It is possible the tip came in this morning and they intentionally started the larger search at the time of the PC. I do agree that if the tip was received prior to this morning, they likely would not wait.

Looks like Hwy 21 is about 6-8 miles from the center of Brooklyn, IA.

Yes, however, the exact scope/size of the possible crime scene area could be unknown. So possible contamination of evidence could be a factor if people arrive, even a ways out. For instance, in other cases, purse contents, phone, clothing, etc strewn a few miles apart.
