That’s odd, “cancelled” as opposed to rescheduled. This makes me seriously wonder if an announcement of a plea deal is looming.
Yes, that's what caught my eye...….I've always said I hoped he'd plea, but I cannot imagine the state agreeing to anything less than LWP. OTOH I can totally see the Tibbetts family agreeing to such a deal. They seem so rock solid and were opposed to the DP (even though IA doesn't have it) IIRC?

Nope. Means either attorneys or Judge isn’t ready.

Snip

Attorneys for both sides were expected to huddle with the judge in what was described as a Trial Management Hearing.

However, last week, Judge Joel Yates determined that discovery in the case was proceeding and there was no reason to hold a hearing.

Either party can request one in the future.

The next scheduled court date is a April 4, 2019, pre-trial conference, followed by a trial in mid-April.

I'm hoping the trial will start as scheduled. Seems like they haven't wasted any time.

Do any of you know if the public is allowed to attend a trial like this in Iowa?

  • #929
Usually trials are public but if there's a good reason to make a trial private, they will or can attempt to. More common in a business trial. I suppose this guy might know something important but I'm not seeing Einstein. jmo

Ha, IKR?! 2 more stragglers coming in smh

Those cards have no effect. To deny funds would give defens grounds for appeal. I wis people would realize there are more effective ways to help. Postcards are a waste of time energy and postage.

Yes, I said the exact thing earlier when it first came up.

I’ve wondered that myself, but then I realized I’m as guilty as anyone. I’m going to remember names and details in this case because I’m emotionally invested. But when somebody brought up Celia Barquin Arozamena I had to google her name.

This case will rapidly heat up into the stratosphere a short time before trial. The national media and public will return to it. Court tv is coming back on a new network as a part of their line up. It would not surprise me at all if they covered it.
I’m still very curious about who has the $$ to pay his attorney fees. The Mexican Government? The ACLU?? Certainly not his family.

Oh I’m sure the trial will bring the whole case back to the spotlight. The reason we’ve been talking about it at work is because I want to be there and I’m asking around about how to do that. Any advice any of you can give me would be appreciated, I hope I can be your news feed from inside that courtroom.

I threw my postcard away as political junk mail. Not surprised that many sent them in before the midterms, several of our elections were close and campaigns were really looking for leverage. But the midterms are over, why do people still have those cards laying around and why are they sending them in now? I don’t understand politics...

After the great vids you posted for this case, I hope you can get there too. We'd have our own WS correspondent

I followed the live tweeting poster in the Charlottesville “unite the right” rally murder trial - that’s when I realized I needed to be in this courtroom to do the same thing. And I’ve got literally months of vacation time built up.

The trial will be open and you can attend. You will want to check out the rules for the specific court and judge who will be presiding. If there is a crazy amount of interest and the physical court room building is small, they may give out passes and limit who can be there only for fire safety rules. But normally media organizations only send one person each so it should probably be fine.

I only practice in NY but in our courts there are different limits on what you can bring into the courts. The SDNY federal court does not allow you to bring in phones without permission. As attorneys we can get a pass but the public is not allowed to bring phones. At the NY state court in Manhattan you can bring phones in but not laptops. Each judge can set his or her own rules too. So make sure you check the website before you go. I have had to leave a blackberry in a bush once!
