Guys, this occurred in the county I live in. I personally know Sheriff Hemann and some of the deputies. I've been watching all day (no work because I work at the school and all schools are closed due to the horrible cold here right now). I know that, to many people, rural Iowa =redneck hicks, but I think these first respinders, Deputies, Sheriff all are doing such a fantastic job with their testimony. Calm, coherent, straight forward and factual. I feel so bad that they have to relive this horrific event. I just want to hug them all and bake them cookies.

Palo: Harris didn't work and Zachary, the father, drove truck and worked some extra shifts.
Palo; Harris said after she saw Sterling the night before, she cared for the daughter, did chores. Zachary got home around 4:30a.m. (Aug30)
Palo: they ate grilled cheese and went to bed after Zachary got off work.
Palo: Harris said she woke up late morning, and checked on Sterling, found him dead, told Zachary.
Palo: she said Sterling slept in swing, daughter slept in crib in parents' bedroom.
Palo: Harris said they hadn't Sterling back to the doctor since he was born. He had a rash, but it got better.
Palo: Harris said she wasn't been on meds.
Palo:Harris said she had been diagnosed with postpartem depression after birth of daughter,had been on meds but quit taking bc made her sick
Palo said the parents were told to come to sheriff's office for interviews, took awhile before they showed up.
Palo: searched the car, found spare tire, toddler seat, a doll. Nothing for a toddler, no room for an infant car seat.
Palo: Did an emergency removal for the toddler daughter
Palo going over the autopsy procedure. There was a quilt over the top, it was saturated. Other clothing stuffed in there.
Palo: dug it out, down to just him in the swing. saw little larva, maggots in the clothing and around Sterling.
Palo: Urine, feces had strained out from diaper, Skin was sloughing off. looked like that diaper hadn't been changed in a really long time.
Palo:He as so small, he was just tiny
Palo: did data extraction on Harris' phone. She was playing games on her phone night of Aug.29 into Aug30. nothing out of the ordinary.

So horrific, how can a mum sit there knowing her baby is suffering in this way.

*Trial continues (Day 2) (@ 9:30am CT) - IA - Sterling Daniel Koehn (4 mos old) (found Aug. 30, 2017 decomposing & covered in maggots in swing, Alta Vista) – only for *Cheyanne Renae Harris (20) “mom” charged & indicted (10/24/17) & arraigned (11/8/17) with 1st degree murder & child endangerment causing death. Plead not guilty. $100K Cash bond.
1/30/19: Jury Selection done.
1/31/19 Day 1: Charges read to defendant. Opening statements. State witnesses: Cathy Knutson, 911 dispatcher. Toni Friedrich, a nurse and first responder Alta Vista apt, also an assistant county medical examiner. Tina Shatek, a mail carrier & 1st responder who also went to the Alta Vista apt. Deputy Jason Rosol, who responded to the scene. Jeremy McGrath, Chickasaw County medical examiner at the time. Chickasaw Co. Sheriff Martin Hemann. Chickasaw Chief Deputy Reed Palo.
*Zachary Paul Koehn (28) charged & indicted (10/24/17) with 1st degree murder & child endangerment. Plead not guilty; $100K Cash bond.
11/6/18 Update Day 6: The child's mother, Cheyanne Harris, was charged & isn't being tried with Koehn. Koehn's defense had subpoenaed her. But her attorney asserted her 5th Amendment rights during a hearing last month after the subpoena. Defense witness: Michael O'Hara, PhD, professor of psychology (Postpartum Depression specialist). Defense is done with evidence. No state rebuttal. Judge gave the jury instructions. Both sides gave closing arguments. Prosecutor gave rebuttal arguments. Judge dismissed the alternate jurors, both men. Jury sent to deliberate at 12:50 p.m. Jury back with verdict after an hour & 10 minutes of deliberations. Guilty of 1st degree murder & child endangerment causing death. Murder carries mandatory life w/out parole, sentencing at later date. 11/21/18: Defense files motion for a new trial.
12/4/18 Update: Judge Richard Stochl on Tuesday sentenced Koehn to the life sentence without parole, as was mandatory under state law.
