Detectives make arrest in 2004 homicide of mother from Priest River

Bonner County Sheriff’s Office

MEDIA RELEASE

July 5, 2018

COLD CASE HOMICIDE ARREST

The Bonner County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in a cold case homicide.

On March 27, 2004, Christine Lott, a mother of three from Priest River, was reported missing by her then husband, Stephen M. Lott, also from Priest River. Christine was 34 years old at the time of her disappearance.

Detectives from the Bonner County Sheriff's Office immediately began an investigation into this suspicious disappearance, and they later classified it as a suspicious death. As a result of our investigation, Stephen Lott, DOB 10-27-1969, became the primary person of interest in Christine’s disappearance. Multiple interviews were conducted with Stephen Lott, as well as with other witnesses. Over the years, detectives continued to explore leads and searched suspected areas in the county for Christine's remains, as a result of those leads.

On February 26, 2016, a shed hunter found what appeared to be human remains in the woods off Forest Service Road 499, in Kootenai County. The remains were soon identified as those of Christine Lott. This case then became a joint investigation with Kootenai County Sheriff's Office. A substantial amount off follow-up continued, to include the examination of evidence and follow-up interviews. Those investigative findings continued to lead detectives towards Stephen Lott as being the primary person of interest.

In June of 2018, Detectives learned of a letter Stephen wrote to a family member, indicating that the death of Christine occurred in Bonner County, and he tried to explain it away as a suicide. This information was contradictory to anything he had told detectives during this investigation. As a result of this new information, detectives were able to secure an arrest warrant for Stephen Lott for the charge of First Degree Murder, with bond set in the amount of one million dollars. Later, a grand jury was convened and found probable cause to charge him with First Degree Murder and Failing to Notify the Coroner of a Death, both a felony.

On June 19, 2018, Stephen Lott was arrested in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on the Bonner County warrant. Stephen Lott was transported back to Bonner County on July 3, 2018. Today Stephen Lott had his first appearance and was charged with First Degree Murder and Failing to Notify the Coroner of a Death.

Special thanks go to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Detectives. Without the culmination of efforts of their detectives and the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office Detectives, this arrest would not have been possible.

@Niner Good timing:

Accused killer pleads not guilty
A Tennessee man indicted for the murder of his wife in Bonner County 14 years ago pleaded not guilty on Monday, 1st District Court records show.

Stephen Mathew Lott’s pleas to first-degree murder and failing to notify a coroner of a death sets the stage for an eight-day jury trial in January 2019. A pretrial conference in the case is set for December.

Lott, 48, faces lifelong imprisonment if convicted of the premeditated killing of the mother of his three children in March 2004. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of failing to notify the coroner of his wife’s death, according to Idaho Code.

Lott remains held at the Bonner County Jail with bail set at $1 million.

And of course they probably don't mention a date in December for the hearing, or the trial in January....

But thanks cybervampira! I shall put them in my "Sometime in December" list. :)

Here's a link to Idaho Ada County court link.
Idaho Court Records Search

you'll see it says >>All other Idaho counties - which I can't access - can you? He's in Bonner county.

He has a court hearing in Dec, but no date was given for that either.
