This is what I was initially expecting, but as the trial went on, it became more and more apparent that LVD had gone out of her way to isolate her kids and cut out of her life anyone who might have challenged her worldview -- a
RED FLAG that someone may be involved in a cult.
It's interesting to note
Steven Hassan's BITE model and how many of the cult mind control methods that were explicitly used by LVD within this little group:
Behavior Control
- Dictate where, how, and with whom the member lives and associates or isolates (telling AC, MP, and ZP to move to Rexburg)
- When, how, and with whom the member has sex (encouraging marriages/divorces)
- Financial exploitation, manipulation, or dependence (paying for CD's travel - possibly others'?)
- Major time spent with group indoctrination and rituals ("casting" meetings)
- Permission required for major decisions (marriages, divorces, custody, travel)
- Rewards and punishments used to modify behaviors (offering CD intimacy as a reward)
- Discourage individualism, encourage group-think
- Threaten harm to family and friends (talking about making those with "dark spirits" scream)
- Instill dependency and obedience
- Separation of families (encouraging CD to get rid of TD)
- Murder
Information Control
- Deliberately withhold information (not telling CV's kids how he died)
- Distort information to make it more acceptable (lying to strangers about how CV died)
- Keep members busy so they don't have time to think and investigate (castings, prayers, visiting the LDS temple)
- Compartmentalize information into Outsider vs Insider doctrines (Church of Firstborn vs "regular" LDS)
- Control information at different levels and missions within the group (missions to complete on this earth)
- Allow only leadership to decide who needs to know what and when ("I'll ask CD to find out...")
- Misquoting statements or using them out of context from non-cult sources (using Christian/LDS terminology)
Thought control
- Require members to internalize group's doctrine as truth
- Instill black and white thinking (dark/light)
- Decide between good and evil (dark/light scale)
- Change person's name and identity ("nicknames" from previous lives)
- Use of loaded language and cliche ("zombies," "warrior up")
- Hypnotic techniques ("healings," casting circles)
- Instill new "map of reality"
Emotional control
- Make the person feel that problems are always their own fault, never the leader's or group's fault (being opposed by evil spirits)
- Instill fear (fear of possession)
- Extremes of emotional highs and lows (love-bombing, telling ZP and others "you're a goddess!")
- Terrible consequences if you leave (possession)
