Flights, church record changes, warrants and more: Events this week that led up to Lori Daybell’s arrest

February 21, 2020

REXBURG — Lori Vallow Daybell stayed busy in the days leading up to her arrest as law enforcement prepared to take her into custody in Kauai.

She and her husband, Chad Daybell, had been living on the island since Dec. 1, according to court documents, and had attended worship services at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But it was only within the past two weeks that Lori officially had her membership record transferred into a new congregation. Local church leaders tell EastIdahoNews.com records of her children, Tylee Ryan and Joshua “JJ” Vallow, were not transferred into the ward, and neither were Chad’s.

Relative of missing kids may have information; Reportedly confesses to attempted murder of ex-husband

Brandon and his attorney filed the paperwork one day before Lori’s arrest in Hawaii.

He claims to have information from Melani`s new husband, who he says has been cooperating with law enforcement.

The documents, obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix, state that her new husband listened to her confess that she conspired to kill Brandon at his home in Gilbert, Arizona, and her uncle Alex Cox — Lori’s brother — was the shooter.

The documents go on state that Melani knows where JJ and Tylee are, but that she is refusing to cooperate. According to the documents, she will sometimes say things like: “Children are full of light, and then just like that they go dark.”

A look at the religious circle surrounding Chad and Lori Daybell

February 23, 2020

[...]

Extreme Religious Beliefs

“I think ‘cult’ is such a weird word because it doesn’t accurately describe what’s happening,” a woman we’ll call Jessica said. “An ‘extremist group’ is a better term.”

Jessica’s experience with these groups started when she and her husband moved to eastern Idaho in 2015. A man in their new congregation — called a ward — approached her and said he was “spiritually prompted” to offer her a job.

[...]

He claimed to have power to see spirits and cast out evil spirits from people. He would counsel with people in his home who were supposedly struggling with evil spirits inside of them, and he would claim to cast the spirits out. She said he wasn’t fulfilling a church role or acting in any official capacity.

[...]

He even appeared to heal Jessica of her celiac, blood sugar and thyroid issues. As a result, she stopped taking all her medications and supplements and ate gluten products again.

Her boss’s gifts seemed to extend into the digital realm too. Once when the business was having computer problems, he invoked his spiritual power to repair a broken computer server. Other times, if there was a bad internet connection, he might blame it on some sort of spiritual interference.

“I knew it was different, but at the time, I wasn’t going to judge what works for somebody,” Jessica said. “In my mind, I was working there because God wanted me too, and I wasn’t going to question God.”

One area she bonded with her boss over was emergency preparedness. Latter-day Saints are taught people should have a “basic supply of food and water and some money in savings” without going to “extremes” so they can support themselves and those around them in case of disaster or troubled times.

So when her employer gave her tickets to a Preparing the People conference in Rexburg on emergency preparation, she was thrilled. Before the conference, her employer introduced her to Chad Daybell, who was helping coordinate the gathering, and Julie Rowe, who was a speaker at the event.

Chad was Rowe’s book publisher. Both of them professed to have a close connection to the spirit world due to near-death experiences, and both claimed to have spiritual experiences that offered them a glimpse into what they believed was the future, Jessica said. They predicted a foreign invasion of the United States, plagues and massive economic collapse.

[...]

“The big thing I took away from (the conference) was that from Ucon north, there was going to be a city of light or city of refuge for saints to gather and be protected as the calamities come and things begin to fall,” Jessica said. “The thing that surprised me at the gathering is I’d never seen so many people that believed in the idea of tent cities. There were so many people.”

She said many in the group believed that one day, there would be a “callout.” Local leaders would stand up in church and issue a call for all the members that had followed the directive to store up food, to gather it and take it to locations for the building of these tent cities.

Jessica and her then-husband took these end-times predictions seriously. The couple cashed out their retirement to buy two large canvas tents and invest in a year’s supply of food, charcoal, fuel and a wide variety of survival gear. She estimates they spent between $15,000 to $20,000 on emergency preparation supplies.

ABC World News had some footage of Lori and Chad at the airport. Lori seems to be videoing the news crew with her phone. It looks like possibly the day they got back from Maui (Feb 18).

JJ'S NANNY: Lori Vallow-Daybell contacted her through http://care.com. She went to Lori's townhome Sept. 18. "She was very welcoming and gave me a hug. Their home was clean and had a picture of a temple on the wall." (con't)
·
JJ'S NANNY: "She explained to me, as we watched JJ play outside with the neighbor kids, some of his tendencies. He gets emotional easily, frustrated, distracted, has difficulty communicating with others, but can follow orders if you look at him right in the eyes."

JJ'S NANNY: "She explained to me how they recently moved here from Arizona. Her husband had just died of a heart attack and how JJ doesn't quite understand the situation. Lori said how she and her husband adopted JJ and that he was her nephew."

JJ'S NANNY: Lori Vallow-Daybell talked to nanny about Tylee: "Her daughter also lives in Rexburg and is going to college. She said her daughter doesn’t like to babysit JJ without being paid so she wanted me to work for her."

JJ'S NANNY-- What Lori said about Tylee: "Occasionally her daughter would come visit for dinner or to do laundry, but she never said that she lived there with them. It appeared that only Lori and JJ lived there, from the look of things and from what she told me."

JJ'S NANNY: "My overall impression of her was that she was kind but seemed stressed out being a newly widowed mom alone with her autistic son."
JJ'S NANNY: Nanny came back Sept. 19 to babysit JJ. "When I walked inside, she mentioned how she was waiting for her brother to come and leave with her to the airport. She said she was going to the Idaho Falls airport. She said her brother also lived here in Rexburg."

"[Lori] mentioned how if she got home later to give JJ his medicine right before bed because it makes him tired fast. She joked about how she liked that because some days when he was extra tough for her to handle, she would give him his meds and have him go to bed early..."

"...to give her a break. Then her brother came over and was quiet, just said hello and then they left. JJ was upset about her leaving and went into the garage. I followed him to make sure he didn’t block the garage from closing."

JJ'S NANNY: Says after Lori left, JJ went to play with neighbor kids. Nanny fed him dinner. JJ tried to leave during dinner. "Lori said she had to put on 2 locks because sometime JJ escapes." Eventually JJ went back to friend's townhouse to play.

"...He threw the chair from their wooden table down, flipped the ottoman over by their couch, and then ran upstairs. I let him cry for a bit, hoping he would calm down, but he didn’t. I felt I should check on him to make sure he wouldn’t hurt himself or break anything..."
"...I quickly found him under the bed in his mom’s room. He also had a room upstairs but from what I remember it just had toys in it and no bed. Lori’s room appeared normal, she had a large bed, bathroom, and it looked clean. Although something kind of strange..."
"...something kind of strange was that there was a small mattress in the corner where JJ slept. It was pretty thin, the size of a twin mattress, with sheets and a pillow. There was a mirror hanging above the mattress in the corner, as JJ ran up from under the bed..."

"...he went toward the mirror and knocked it off the wall. Hoping it didn’t break glass all over the mattress, I picked it up. While doing so he ran back downstairs. As I went back downstairs, JJ was still upset and said his mom wouldn’t want me to come over again..."
"...that he hated me, and didn’t want to be my friend. Shortly after this freak out his mom, her brother, and the friend walked in from the garage. The mom calmed JJ and asked me what happened. I explained the situation and she babied him..."

JJ'S NANNY: Said it was "overwhelming the amount of love" Lori showed JJ after his breakdown. Nanny met Lori's friend Lori picked up from airport, a woman who did podcasts with Lori. "I didn’t see a suitcase, so I don’t think she was staying that long."

J'S NANNY: Lori thanked Nanny and paid $40 cash. "From what we had talked about yesterday that was what she seemed to be needing, was nearly daily assistance from me. This was the last day I saw JJ and Lori."

JJ'S NANNY: Sept. 24 (day after JJ went missing) nanny reached out to Lori. "...she responded to me that JJ was with his grandparents for a month and that she was in Hawaii. She said in about a month, when they come back, that I could work again. Well once that month passed..."

JJ'S NANNY: "I texted her again around Halloween time, asking if I could work. There was no response... I thought it was pretty weird that they just up and left for a month and didn't need me to work ever again after just hiring me."

JJ'S NANNY: Nanny's thoughts on Lori's explanation of JJ going to grandparents home, Lori going to Hawaii: "I assumed she must have really needed a break from JJ I guess, and I left it at that. That was the last time I ever communicated with Lori."

Some notes on what the nanny said Lori told her-- like Lori's husband dying from heart attack. We know Charles Vallow died because Lori's brother, Alex Cox, shot and killed Charles. Alex told police it was self-defense.

Lauren Steinbrecher on Twitter
s far as what Lori told the nanny about Tylee, Lori's daughter-- Rexburg PD have confirmed Tylee never enrolled at BYU-ID (PD said Lori told other people this). Neighbors said they saw Tylee around the townhouses. She was last seen Sept. 8 in Yellowstone National Park.

n regards to JJ's medicine-- Charging docs revealed Rexburg PD found JJ's medication with pills still in the bottle during search warrant of townhouse. They confirmed meds were filled in Arizona, never refilled in Idaho.

On Sept. 24, the day the nanny said she reached out to Lori, JJ's school in Rexburg said Lori came in to unenroll him because she was going to home school him instead. JJ was last seen Sept. 23 at his school. Hasn't been seen since. (end thread)

Search for missing Idaho teen Tylee Ryan may include Yellowstone National Park, sources say

February 25, 2020, 7:51 AM

Investigators are considering searching inside Yellowstone National Park for missing Idaho teen Tylee Ryan, sources close to the investigation told CBS News. Ryan, 17, and her 7-year-old brother Joshua "JJ" Vallow haven't been seen since September.

Their mother, Lori Vallow, was arrested in Hawaii and faces child abandonment and desertion charges.

According to court documents, police in Rexburg, Idaho, said phone records show Ryan visited Yellowstone with her mother, uncle and brother JJ ‪on September 8, CBS News correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti reports. Police also "obtained a photo from Lori Vallow's iCloud account" of Ryan in the park. They said there's been no sign of life since.

Detectives are waiting for the snow to melt in Yellowstone to search, the sources said. Park officials declined to comment citing an "active investigation."

Police said doorbell camera footage has also surfaced showing what is believed to be JJ playing with a neighbor in September just days before he disappeared.

One common thread throughout nearly all of our interviews for this story has been the Another Voice of Warning or AVOW website. It’s a paid forum site run by Jefferson County resident Christopher Parrett Sr. for Latter-day Saints to have discussions or offer conjecture about their religion.

For the most part, that’s exactly what it is. The forum covers a variety of topics relating to the church and makes it clear that anti-religion or apostate material or doctrines should not be discussed. Yet plenty of material on the site goes beyond or even contrary to official church teachings and some are substantially different than what most members of the Church believe.

A large section of the site is devoted to discussions on emergency preparedness and prophecies, dreams, and visions.

Some of the most-read threads on the site are:
  • The Callout is Coming: Replies from the Temple Dreamer…
  • TENT CITIES: Further Light and Knowlege (sic)…
  • Making our Calling and Election Sure.
  • Why Prepare, when I can take it all from the Mormons???
EastIdahoNews.com reached out to Parrett for comment on the site, and his personal religious beliefs, but our messages were ignored and then posted on AVOW.

Many current and former subscribers have reached out to EastIdahoNews.com about the site in recent weeks. Some of them say it is an enlightening place to gain a deeper understanding of their religion, while others such as Jessica and Amber say it is a place where Latter-Day Saint extremists find like-minded people.

Most of the people who contacted EastIdahoNews.com did so because Chad was a frequent contributor to the site, where he discussed his near-death experiences and thoughts on the future. He still has a lot of defenders on AVOW, who believe the current stories in the press about him are media sensationalism or a hoax.

Julie Rowe, the speaker at the preparedness event Jessica attended, tells EastIdahoNews.com she was introduced to Chad on AVOW, although she has since stopped using the platform.

After the death of his previous wife, Tammy Daybell, Chad stopped publishing on AVOW, but had reportedly remained in contact with Parrett. Several weeks ago, Parrett posted the following message on AVOW allegedly from Chad:

“Thanks for the update. The issue is that people are linking me to Julie’s (Rowe) beliefs, which I studied but rejected. Lori and I have been absolutely silent for three months. I am constrained by my lawyers from saying more until the legal mess is complete, but be assured I will be back. Hopefully, the subscribers will be there when I can fully return to GRI and tell my experiences. I appreciate your support. Chad.”

Parrett also posted these messages after a conversation with Chad.

Mother shares 'chilling' experience of asking Lori Daybell where her children are

IDAHO FALLS -- Ursula Berliner will never forget her encounter with Lori Vallow Daybell. It was short, on an airport shuttle in Maui and an experience Berliner describes as "chilling." The Oregon mother had just landed in Hawaii with her husband and daughter last week when they made their way to pick up a rental car. As they boarded the shuttle, she recognized Lori and Chad from stories she had seen in the news. Lori’s children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and his sister, 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, have not been seen since September. "Chad was really recognizable but Lori looked a lot different than the pictures I had seen," Berliner tells EastIdahoNews.com. "She was dressed in black, heavy clothes and it was 80 degrees outside. She had big bags under her eyes. I had eye contact with her and she just looked like she felt untouchable - like she knew people would recognize her and it didn’t bother her." Berliner said her heart "sank to her legs" and she was concerned the Daybells may be on the run from law enforcement. After getting off the shuttle, she tried to call police but she couldn't get a cell phone signal. The couple went inside to rent a vehicle while Berliner remained outdoors with her family.

Would it be possible to kill someone in Yellowstone, dump the body and having nobody around notice? I'm assuming one of the adults stayed with JJ while Tylee was "taken care of". Did they push her somewhere, did they shot her? What the heck man, that's cold. She was still just a girl.
