The desire for additional revelatory insight can relate to a number of aspects/doctrines within Mormonism, but I think may be particularly strong in relation to the Second Coming of Jesus.

As has been noted, an important part of the reason for the existence of Mormonism is the belief that Christ will come for a second time soon. While 200 years of intervening Mormon history has lessened the day-to-day importance of this idea for many Mormons, there are some for whom this thought is very much a central part of what they consider their central day-to-day LDS existence to be.

And to be as honest as I can, again from my own perspective, the institutional church keeps this idea alive. The current (relatively new) prophet/president of the church has on more than one occasion told members that we need to think of ourselves as living in the last days, when new knowledge from heaven is going to be forthcoming. The church will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Joseph Smith's first vision in less than two months, and some rumors have been making the rounds within mainstream Mormonism as to whether there are going to be new, important prophetic announcements during the church's general conference to celebrate the occasion.

More generally, the church has more or less staked its claim on the narrative that the world is growing more and more wicked over time (that's part of the "signs of the times" that Mormonism generally believes will precede the Second Coming). So, MOO, church members have been conditioned to see current affairs through the lens of a world ever-ripening in wickedness. This is not to say that members reject participating in that world, nor is it to say that they reject non-members of the church in any way. But it is to say that it's an entirely normal thing to hear within Mormon conversations to one another discussion about how the world is going to pot and how members need to stand up for truth and right in a world that will increasingly work against that truth. Currently, in the USA at least, this seems most often (at least recently) to apply to LGBTQ+ issues, for a lot of members. Thus, I think it becomes understandable that some members are convinced that the world has already become so evil that the Second Coming must be nigh. And so, even though the institutional church has not developed any specific strategies to deal with the Second Coming, some members feel like there must be more that God wants us to know.

As some have mentioned before on this thread, the year 2000 was (at least in the 1970s -1980s) expected within Mormonism culturally (though never officially) to be a time when Christ could come. That died down during the 1990s somewhat, as far as I can tell, but the idea that we're somewhere near the end has never entirely died, and remains a more vital teaching to some than to others within Mormon culture.

Looks like Chad is possibly preparing to leave Hawaii beginning of March.

Source: Chad Daybell has canceled lease on Princeville condo and expects to move out by 2/28. Source tells me he plans to leave island — unknown when exactly. His wife Lori Vallow’s extradition hearing is set for 3/2. On Friday we confirmed said condo is in escrow. #fox10phoenix

I'm sure it's around, but, were all of Chad's outlets for book purchases collated into a list? I seem to recall he was dropped from Deseret Book.

I'm not sure this kind of a list would be readily available for any book, author, or publisher. What I can say is:

Chad's books (I didn't check any of his other authors) are available on the major online books stores (mainly Amazon, but also Barnes & Noble) in both paper and ebook. The market they are aimed at is a niche market, so a typical bricks and mortar bookstore in most places wouldn't carry them as there would be no demand. The exception to that would be stores in highly Mormon areas. Possibly some of those whether a chain like B&N or an independent bookstore would, I have no idea.

There are also two small chains aimed at this niche, Deseret Book and Seagull Book. I've seen articles on this saying these are both owned by the Mormon Church. I'm not sure whether or not that is true, but it wouldn't surprise me, especially in the case of Deseret Book. These chains apparently carried his books at some point in the past, but based on searching their online stores they don't appear to anymore.

Well, I guess that Lori Vallow no longer has a residence in Hawaii. Unless it is the jail!

This is the part that concerns me. What’s going to happen when the world doesn’t end in July? When the second coming doesn’t begin? I get preparedness. I’ve got a larder/pantry and it is well stocked and comes in really handy. But CD/LV and the rest are taking it way too far. What’s going to happen to all those people that have comepletely changes their lives, marriages, sold up and bought all these provisions when the world carries on as normal? MOO

My guess is that Chad will stay through the extradition hearing and then head back to Idaho.

That is a great question. It will be interesting (at best) to see what happens).

I am not so sure he goes back to Idaho. If he goes there he could be charged at the very least with lying to the police.

Good. I am sure that the police officers in Rexburg have some additional questions for him about Tammy's demise.

(Hoping Chad will crack).

@LDS social scientist: I'm really enjoying your posts, you're hitting the nail on the head. All day today, I have been thinking that it would be hard to not get pretty confused by all of this if you didn't have a lot of previous knowledge about the LDS faith (particularly the stuff about personal revelation and the last days). Other contributors have also done a good job of trying to clarify things. Keep up the good work -- in my opinion, your thoughts add valuable context to this discussion.

Yes, and I’m inclined to wonder if some of these “revelations” in behalf of Melani and others in the group didn’t originate with Chad. I’m wondering if Chad is the head honcho revelation giver in this group. MOO

Jeez louise, it strikes me that both Chad and Lori have personalities where they pretty much get off on spending their time manipulating people to get what they want, vs doing any actual work. LV totally jerked JR around for years with the custody thing. She totally jerked CV around for a lesser time frame, but the stuff she did to the guy was just unreal. And she totally weaponized his love for her, JJ, his care & concern for CR & TR, and his obvious desire to hold his family together.

I don't know the dynamics of the relationship between Chad & Tammy, but it appears to me that TD was doing the majority of the heavy lifting while he was out in left field picking daisies, doing his own thing, and then lording it over his wife telling her her dead grandmother doesn't want her to play Farmville.

And when they do all their manipulations, somehow they seem to come up to the positive while the responsible party in the relationship gets either two bullets to the chest or whatever made Tammy not wake up the next morning. And I really wonder about Joe Ryan, dead only 15 months before this went down.

I just want those kids to come home, heal, have a chance at a good life and be reunited with normal people who love them in normal ways and do not abuse or exploit them. They have already lost so much, I hope and pray they have not and will not lose any more.

The one bright spot is knowing that control freak Lori is sitting in jail, where she is under the control of people who have her number and are used to dealing with criminals, while she cannot control jack crap. And the other bright spot that Chad may lose everything, even his freedom. It's really only fair, given that Charles and Tammy have lost their very lives.

Interesting! Is he not going to stay and support Lori? Has Chad "felt prompted" to flee before possibly similar charges are filed against him? How is he not already charged with resisting and obstructing officers and criminal solicitation? Those are 2 of Lori's charges for lying about the whereabouts of JJ and for calling MG and asking her to lie to police about having JJ. Chad did the same things according to Lori's charging docs. I hope he's not able to flee to another country.

MOO.

He's got Tammy's life insurance money to live comfortably on some tropical island for quite a while. I don't think Chad (without Lori) is a big spender.
