eeyorelrn, I share your frustration and outrage. BUT, it is not LE that lets these monsters off with a slap on the wrist. It is the judges and sentencing guidelines. Mostly the judges, tho.
LE goes out and arrests these monsters. LE does their job and the DA and judges let them go without enough punishment. So the DA and the judges are the ones I blame. In letting these monsters off lightly, the victim is victimized all over again and full justice is not done. The DA is responsible for Melissa's 'deal'. She paid very little consequences in her disgusting crime, and was free to do it all over again if she wanted to. (to another child she might have) Let's put the blame squarely where it belongs.
O/T: I have had company in from New York state until yesterday afternoon and am just now getting caught up here.
I agree with this--and so do many law enforcement officers. I have talked with many police officers regarding this topic. They often get frustrated and disgruntled about the plea deals that so many criminals are allowed to "cop to."
As one officer told me, "We arrest these scumbags--knowing full well the extent and horror of their crimes--only to have them back on the streets because the judicial system doesn't see fit to punish them properly. Soon, we find ourselves re-arresting these same scumbags for similar--or often, much worse--crimes. It is very frustrating."
I think that the entire judicial system needs to be re-worked.
Too many plea deals are allowed, even in light of incredibly damning evidence against the offender.
Too many violent criminals are given a slap on the hand and released back into the public arena only to re-offend, and usually with much more violence.
Too many victims never see proper justice doled out because of the way laws are interpreted, or because of a lackadaisical approach to punishment of offenders.
When someone is accused of a violent crime, and the evidence is available to back up those accusations, then those offenders should be locked up for a long time, and in some instances, forever.
No more early parole, no more time off for good behavior, no more plea deals.
