GUILTY ID - Taryn Summers, 8, sibs Tristan Sexton 17 (MISSING 10/1) & Taylor 14, safe, 15 Apr 2021 *arrest

I’m confused by the carpet. Grandmother said she burned the carpet that had feces on it. Why not just toss on the trash? I’m asking as someone who has lived in & just outside major cities - I do have some relatives in rural areas who burn most of their trash. Is that likely to be the case here - that she regularly burned trash?

IMO/just a guess, but because it probably didn’t have feces, but rather TS’ blood, which is much more damning evidence!

Burning trash is frowned upon here. And we are extremely dry at the moment so doubly frowned upon. That being said some people do it anyway...and I would think especially if you have something to dispose of that you would not want found.

It probably wasn't feces that she was trying to get rid of, but evidence of a crime, imo. She wanted that destroyed, not just thrown in the trash. I would imagine burning a hunk of carpet would be stinky and, depending on how large it was, the neighbors might have noticed - which will help with a timeline.

Something horribly messy happened in that bedroom, imo.

BBM They were led... By the fact that CS was seen driving the vehicle that day? By SOP? Or by someone?

Idaho woman charged after girl's body found in trash bag (apnews.com)
Investigators with Idaho State Forensic returned to the house on Wednesday where they were led to a vehicle registered to the suspect’s son.
My initial thought was led to that vehicle based on it being the car she drove to drop off the 4yo at preschool that day... but re-reading now I agree, the language used is a bit confusing.

Investigators with Idaho State Forensic returned to the house on Wednesday where they were led to a vehicle registered to the suspect’s son.
Another search of the property led investigators to a black Lexus parked in front of the house.

Not sure if it was someone that led them to the car or possibly an odor that was coming from the car that led them to it.

Investigators: 8-year-old Emmett girl's body found in trash bag in grandmother's car | ktvb.com

The news released Thursday that the body of a young girl reported missing earlier in the week had been found has stunned and angered the Emmett community. Saturday over 200 people lit candles and shared memories of eight-year old Taryn Summers during an evening vigil at Bowman Park in downtown Emmett.
Many in the crowd, some who came from miles away, had no personal relationship with Taryn or her family but came anyway to mourn her passing. A dozen or so classmates and friends shared their memories of her life.
A neighbor whose little girl often played with Taryn, said she “was a sweet innocent little girl with a heart of gold.”
Her elementary school teacher, Vickie Renfro, called her “a delightful bundle of energy.”
“Taryn was a kind, funny, smart, artistic young lady. She loved to play with her friends, and to help others,” Renfro said. “She was very active and liked to swing with her friends. Taryn liked to help her teachers and her classmates whenever she could.”
Shannon Hughes, who with her husband Mike, foster hosted Taryn and three of her siblings for a short time in 2020 said that they “found her to be so willing to help – played with our younger children so lovingly. I don’t recall laughing any harder than during the time they were with us.”

Taryn had been enrolled at Shadow Butte Elementary until she was withdrawn by her guardian sometime after Christmas to be home schooled.

Grrrrrr! The good home schooling parents may not understand this, because they do a good job homeschooling. But some parents say they are "home schooling" for nefarious reasons!!!! Idaho has no oversight of homeschooling. None.
BUT, if Taryn was in foster care, wouldn't there have been oversight?

Given how gregarious and fun-loving Taryn seemed to be, I can't help but think she likely enjoyed the social part of going to school and seeing friends. I know homeschoolers also socialize and I know most are not isolated at home...but some are. I'd like to know why the decision was made to pull Taryn out of school. Seems like the younger child at home was still attending a school, so why not Taryn?

(I'm supportive of homeschooling, btw, for families who chose that route. I've seen how successful it can be, and I'm not at all making sweeping negative generalizations about homeschoolers....just the ones who end up murdering the child at home.)

Exactly. The unintended consequences of having no oversight of home schooling is that some parents misuse and abuse it. And the children suffer.

If Taryn was in foster care, I'm surprised she was "homeschooled." The students I taught who were in foster care and had been "homeschooled" were immediately enrolled in school when they went into care. Wouldn't a case worker have been monitoring this? Hope someone who knows more about foster care will weigh in.

Of course foster care laws vary greatly state to state but where I am, children in foster care are not allowed to be homeschooled. Or at least that was the case when we first took our licensing classes 5 years ago. I wonder though if the rules are different for kinship care ... I’m still not clear on the relationship between CS and Taryn, but if CS is some sort of familial relationship to Taryn and she was under kinship care rather than traditional foster care, at least in my state, this type of care falls into its own category and generally the rules/oversight are different. In other words, kinship care seems to be handled as in between traditional bio parenting and foster care, in terms of rules and regulations.

Again though- all of this is specific to my state and the kinship info is from close friends of ours who went through that process, as we’ve only ever done traditional foster care.

In some reports, the media has reported CS as TS's grandmother and other reports identify CS as the foster mother of all three children -- citing Jennifer Saxton (TS maternal aunt). Also, I recall a classmate saying TS sat next to her on the school bus so I don't believe she was homeschooled. MOO

Jennifer Sexton, who identified herself as [Taryn] Summers’s aunt, said that all three of the vanished children were siblings and that Smith was their foster mother, according to the description on a ******** page Sexton created to help cover funeral costs

It definitely seems there is confusion within media on CS role- this article refers to court documents where CS reported her granddaughter missing. Grandmother Said Idaho Girl, 8, Had Run Away, But Then Child's Body Was Found in Her Car: Police

The MSM article posted above by @ReadySet (Community mourns and remembers Taryn Summers) states Taryn was in school until sometime after Christmas when she was pulled out to be homeschooled. I’m guessing the classmates are from prior to her being pulled out since she was IN traditional school not all that long ago.

I missed this news report -- thank you @kccorona.

More news here about foster family -- probably an independent and safe home. Sorry that the children didn't stay with the Hughes family...

My understanding is that CS was bio grandmother to one of the teens who ran away in the fall, but was not bio grandmother to Taryn, but I could be wrong.
The oldest son has the same last name as the maternal aunt (Sexton, mentioned in MSM), which is probably his mother's maiden name and he's likely not the bio grandchild of the suspect. Grandma is associated with the last name Summers. Quinton was the last name also mentioned in MSM for Taryn.

It seems more likely to me that they are all the same unnamed daughter's biological children and Saxon was just given his father's surname at birth than that Smith nee Summers had custody of a non-blood related grandson.
