A 31 year-old man, Andrew Hintt and his 2 sons, ages 5 and 7, were found shot to death in their Belvidere, Il home. The boys’ mother called the landlord, who then called police, after she didn’t hear from the father on Sunday. The weapon used was not in the house, although there were casings at the scene.

Deaths of Illinois man, 2 sons deemed a triple homicide

How horrific! Seems unlikely to be a completely random crime, wonder what the motive was, besides theft?

Right now, very little is known. The motive is unknown.

For the Jeep to be missing says that it could have been random or semi-random by which I mean the perpetrator might have been looking for someone to rob and knew of Andrew, that he would be an easy target. Maybe they didn't expect him and his kids to recognize them or maybe they just wanted a good head start with the vehicle. I wonder if it will be found soon. A lot of times when they switch they don't hide the first car.

unreal - I think the kids were just collateral damage to the murderer

Interview with family is in this link. “We will never be the same again;” family and friends react to murders of Belvidere man and his two sons | MyStateline.com

Andrew Hintt's aunt said he's had "issues in his past." The victim had a criminal history. Pair Already In Jail Charged With Burglary At McHenry County Bar
His neighbors spoke positively of him.

Nothing justifies murder, especially murders of 2 innocent children.
Given the 6lbs of marijuana in the above article, I'm going with drug debt or crossed the wrong person in the drug world as motive. Not that anything would ever justify murdering those boys.

The suspect could be somebody the victim met in prison..

Maybe the move to California was to get away from past issues.
His fiancée and other 3 children (all under the age of 3!) were in California.
Wonder if they were staying with relatives and why Andrew wasn’t already out there with them. Maybe getting the house ready to sell? Or perhaps his fiancé had already found a job out there.
Just horrible :(
