Thanks. The presser said she was found on land but not grass. I am hoping that her camera was found and perhaps they were able to develop the film and see what she took pictures of, maybe it lead them to where she was in the park and maybe she took a pic of the perp, one can pray. Asking everyone for leads about activity that took place on the park on or about Oct 14th I think its more of a murder investigation. Hoping we hear more news soon and this perp is caught asap. The FB page has updates periodically.
Its so sad that no one can go to the park alone to work on school work, or let their kids play in the neighborhood.

Police say remains in woods found early in search for missing NIU student

UPDATE 2:25 p.m.

DeKALB – The unidentified human remains that were found in a wooded area of Prairie Park in DeKalb were discovered "early in the investigation" of a search for a missing Northern Illinois University student, police said Sunday.

DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen declined to elaborate as to how early in the investigation that was, but said, "I expect something more to come out in the next few days on that."

<snip>
When asked if search dogs led police to the remains, Feithen said no. When asked what did lead them there, he said he is "not going to elaborate any more on the remains" at this time.

"We had searched the park several times and they were in the park in areas that were searched, but again, they were found early in the investigation," Feithen said when asked if the remains were found in a part of the park that had previously been searched.

Feithen also declined to provide additional information when asked if the remains had been concealed at all and where they were found, and said "I can't go there" when asked if the remains were intact or if they have been removed from the park. He also declined to specify what items were found with the remains; police had previously said they believed Keller had a camera and art supplies with her.

"We will get into that when we discuss the remains and items," he said when asked about the condition of the body. "I hope that's going to be in the next few days. We will call another press conference when we are ready to release additional information."

Says they found her early in the investigation.....I have no idea what any of this means. :waitasec:

Did they tell her family this?

I can't say what the mean or why they waited to say anything. it is possible, however, that they have a POI and they wanted to track his (I assume it would be male) movements during the time the discovery was not publicized.

BBM

It states "they were in the park in areas that were searched..." It could be just the reporter's own interpretation rather than the exact words of LE.

But, it made me wonder if LE had found a bone or two early in the search maybe in different areas and that they have finally found enough bones to confirm it was human ? It could be that the body had been dismembered and maybe they have only found some of the bones? Are there any animals up there big enough to scatter or carry off the bones?

Watcher9-
I listened to Feithen's press conf carefully and he never said that they recovered a "body", only that they have recovered "human remains" and "items consistent with property belonging to Keller". I think your comment about LE possibly finding body part(s)/ bone(s) earlier during the search and just last evening deciding they had enough to call it a human is close to what happened.

I suspect the reason the identification is taking so long is because key elements that would facilitate this have not been found (ie. teeth for dental record comparison or fingers for finger prints)

The autopsy was reportedly started this AM. It does not take that long to identify individuals using dental records. Perhaps the forensic odontologist wasn't available last night or today but that seems unlikely.

The way Feithen parsed his answer to the questions about when the remains were found was very strange: "it's a process that has taken some time and we won't pinpoint the exact time..." I think the next official update is going to be even more upsetting than last nights.

there are some rumors that they found a shovel and may be connected on the facebook page tonight, ive never heard this before.
i think your right the next press conference will be a lot of worse. i'm thinking the same thing about remains vs. body because if they had her body why couldnt they positively id it on the scene, like its a girl, etc. but only can through dental records. my worry is that this perp is still loose and in the the week time she was missing, the perp has the opportunity to grab another student or something. i'm glad no other student is missing but its very scary.

I'm not sure of the source of this link, but the information, if accurate, is profoundly disturbing. between being told to leave a shovel in the park to being told to leave it at the university, some people in LE there should lose their jobs.

kudos to Mr. Steffen for being so persistent.

I agree with you webrocket....the link implied they were too busy to retrieve the shovel. Gee, that doesn't sound very professional.
Thanks to everyone posting links and info to this thread. I am following.

The first source that I found mentioning the shovel was the Daily Chronicle 10/20/10:
http://www.daily-chronicle.com/articles/2010/10/19/59930462/index.xml (scroll down to the lower third of the section entitled "Finding the Missing"

I have been wondering about the repeated dog searches (mentioned in same article)
"Search dogs followed a trail from her room along the path she apparently walked, but lost the scent near Interstate 88".

In a revised version of this reporter's article ( http://www.kcchronicle.com/articles/2010/10/20/05880473/index.xml ) it said: "The dogs picked up Keller's scent in her room and followed a path that disappeared near First Street and Fairview Drive."

I wonder if the dogs were tracking Antinette's scent on the killer as he left the area.

This is a link that approximates where the remains were found (behind the Elk's Club at 209 S Annie Glidden Rd) and where the dogs lost the scent. http://tinyurl.com/38mgm7b

NBC Chicago affiliate at 11:00PM (late due to a football game) had this lead to the news:

Campus on lock down
Killer on the loose

Talked about increased security, restricted access to ALL dorms, shortened visiting hours, students interviewed expressed fear and wish to transfer...

My comments:
Many of these kids are away from home for the first time and look what they have to deal with. Sounds like NIU is doing everything possible to enhance a sense of safety/security. to all the students.

Who knows who did this horrible crime, what kind of predator and where he lives. My heart goes out to all the students trying to deal with the loss of their friend and those who are fearful.

My sincerest wish that loved ones and all family are holding up. They have lost a beautiful daughter, granddaughter, sister, friend. :blowkiss: moomho

What does this mean?? They found her soon after she went missing??

On our local news there was speculation on what that 'early in the investigation' meant. IMO, it is subjective and early does not necessarily mean LE did not notify the public until many days later she would found.
IMO by 'early in the investigation' this could simply mean 10 days was considered soon, where as many people are missing for 10 months, 10 years.....

I honestly think it was just the choice of words used by the person speaking which unintentionally led to further speculation. I mean honestly, IF something were very tragic and the publics safety was of great concern LE would not be playing this down and keeping it so close to the vest they risked the general publics safety.... I really do think it was how many could choose to interprete the choice of words.
