GUILTY IL - Antinette 'Toni' Keller, 18, DeKalb, NIU Student, 14 October 2010

It's a shame that legal proceedings drag out for so long...I had hoped that after Curl's mental health evaluation, the wheels of justice would move more quickly. For obvious reasons, Keller's family is suffering, and if by some slim chance law enforcement doesn't get a conviction against Curl, then that would imply another killer could still be out there, awaiting an opportunity to attack other students. As an NIU parent, I'd like to know, too.

An agreement was reached this week to allow some of Toni Keller's remains/ashes to be released to her family. The DeKalb State's Attorney said some of the remains have to be maintained for evidence at trial, but he "believed there are enough remains to allow those with evidentiary value to be preserved while releasing others to provide some comfort to the Keller family." A memorial service is being planned.

Evidence exchange in Curl case continues

DeKALB | The state of Illinois turned over nearly 4,000 pages of evidence Tuesday to the defense attorney of William P. Curl, the DeKalb man charged with the murder of Antinette "Toni" Keller.

Curl's next status update is set for June 21 to give Harris time to review the materials.

Campbell said he expects to give more evidence materials to Harris on June 21.

At Curl's Aug. 2 appearance, his attorney said she's found a DNA expert to be present when the tiny samples, presumed to be those of Toni Keller, are tested by the Illinois State Police crime lab.
His attorney, Ms. Harris, also subpoenaed the DeKalb Police Department, seeking any information on other offenses involving Curl, regardless of whether an arrest was made.
His next appearance is scheduled for Sept. 28th.

A memorial for Toni Keller will be held on NIU's campus this evening, 10/18/11, marking the 1-year-anniversary of the discovery of her remains. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/10/18/niu-to-hold-memorial-for-slain-student-toni-keller/

Cubby, was the link "email me" under your grandfather quotation meant for me to do, or is it just part of your standard signature, for anyone who would like to reach you? (I haven't been following other discussion threads, so I'm not sure.) :waitasec:

I added it to my standard siggy line for anyone who would like to reach me.

Thank you again so much for keeping up with the news on Toni's case. It's hard to believe it's been a year already.

He first refused to say anything, then claimed he happened to be in the park and just found her dead, and panicked when he tried to move her body but got her blood on his clothes, and later, his story changed to her having died during a drug-fueled consensual sexual encounter.

I doubt we'll ever really know the whole truth about what happened, but I'm glad he's acknowledged being involved in the crime and is behind bars, so that other students don't need to worry about a killer still being on the street. Curl's still set to go to trial on June 11 on charges of first-degree murder, criminal sexual assault and arson.

Curl's trial is pushed back to Dec 3rd now. Eyeroll. Just set him on fire fgs.

He will be in court June 12 for a status update about the psychological reports that caused this latest delay. (well that and his PD's maternity leave)

Somehow I'd missed this article, which said the judge will allow a prior complaint of alleged criminal sexual abuse by William Curl to be used at trial: http://northernstar.info/city/police_beat/article_0133213a-97dc-11e1-94e7-001a4bcf6878.html

In 1995, he allegedly made unwanted sexual advances by kissing and fondling a young woman’s breasts in the bathroom of a DeKalb house, but she never pursued charges against him. Allgedly, the woman was under 21 and under the influence of alcohol at the time.

I agree with AmandaReconwith, and just wish they'd get done with him...

niuparent, thank you for continuously staying on top of the happenings in this case. It has not gone unnoticed and is very much appreciated.

On another note, what on earth is it about northern IL cases taking years to get to trial? We don't see this elsewhere..... big smack on the side of the head to those wasting tax payer money when so many area's are in the red. Just get on with it fgs! Only in Illinois! sheesh!

I wish I knew, but I've heard, "the courts are overburdened" (does that mean we really have THAT MUCH more crime than anywhere else?) To me, it seems more likely that there are either not enough efficient employees, or else a bunch of lawyers who like to argue/delay things on various technicalities... It's frustrating to you and me, but I can only imagine how much more agonizing and difficult this process must be on victims and their families.

2 "big" trials are set for possible overlap in Will County IL... Peterson and Vaughn.
Peterson was April 2004 with an Oct 2007 push.
Vaughn was June 2007.

5 yrs and over for those to be brought forward. PATHETIC.

I'm hoping Curl will be resolved before 2012 ends, but no confidence in that hope.

Here's a link to Toni Keller's case archive, in case anyone reading here has not seen it.
