Authorities said police responded just before 6 p.m. in the 2700 block of West Taylor Street and made the grisly discovery. Police said someone walking on the sidewalk found a box containing human remains.

The office still working to determine the victim's age, gender, and race.

2700 W Taylor is right near a handful of medical schools. Hoping that this is just an improperly disposed of medical specimen and not a homicide.

Wonder if someone tried to steal a medical specimen (for whatever reason) and panicked shortly after leaving campus with what they took. Could it be a case of underground body brokering like what happened at Harvard? MOO.

None of the articles I've read really specify whether the remains were skeletal in nature, only that the witness who found it thought or hoped it was a weird Halloween decoration.

Now the "problem" with this one is that it seems to be only a human skull and the NamUs does not yet specify an estimated PMI. This could easily be an extremely old medical specimen. Not to imply that means we shouldn't try to identify the decedent via genetic genealogy.

MOO.

NamUs was modified on March 12.

The biological sex has been changed from unsure to male.

His NamUs page is down at the moment.

How would they be able to tell a human skull is specifically 51 years old?

The person the skull belonged to would have been aged 51 years old at the time of discovery if alive.

But if they don't know who it is, how would they know that? If they do know, why is his race unknown?

So they know who it is but aren't saying?

The Cook County (where Chicago is) Medical Examiner’s case lookup website doesn’t include name data for any of their decedents like some other similar websites do, just demographic info for age and race. Whether or not any kind of public announcement will be made outside of this I do not know, but it is very likely the case is resolved (which would be why the NamUs profile went down) and the remains were identified as a recently deceased person.

Just noting that the time of death is listed as 5:55 PM, and the incident date is listed as 7:35 PM. I don’t know if this two-hour discrepancy is meaningful, but most other indexed cases list death as being after the incident date. I know there were reporting discrepancies between a head vs a skull being found

The individual was likely identified, which is why his NamUs page was removed. As for the race, I don’t entirely know. There are a lot of idiosyncrasies in how these forms and charts are filled out.
