Hm. I wonder how police in other countries manage.
How many armed criminals do they deal with on a regular basis?Seriously though! Countries such as Britain, Iceland, Norway, Ireland, New Zealand, many cops don't even carry firearms!
If I were a cop who found myself in a life threatening situation but could not muster up the courage(not sure if this is the right word) to kill another human being, would I garner more sympathy by saying that I couldn't shoot because I was afraid there might be protests?
Really? If you are more concerned about there being protests than losing your life, maybe your life wasn't really being threatened.
That is why I take this story with a grain of salt. Not to mention the PD in question and the obvious motives they would have right now to spin this story. JMO

Question for those following more closely than I am: Did she and/or her partner speak to the media or is the information coming through a police spokesperson?
I'm curious how the media got hold of this particular story.
No we haven't heard directly from her or her colleagues. This was a point I was trying to make earlier. I believe we heard from a Superintendent and a union guy.
ABC7 reached out to the Fraternal Order of Police but did not get a comment.
That's not the point. They are often unarmed and somehow they manage. How? That was the question.
Maybe "our" criminals are much worse than "theirs"? More violent? More impulsive? More murderous? More gang affiliation?
Maybe "their" criminals are more likely to cooperate with police officers? Maybe "their" criminals are more likely to cooperate with being arrested? Maybe "their" criminals don't attack, or murder, police officers as often as "ours" do?
Maybe "their" citizens commit far less crimes than "ours" do, proportionally?
Maybe "their" governments and local administrators support police officers and policing more than "ours" do?
That's not the point. They are often unarmed and somehow they manage. How? That was the question.
Since the other partners were close enough to taze, why did they not shoot him in the arm or leg?
Ahhhh, now we are getting somewhere. Why do you suppose Americans are more likely to be violent criminals who disobey police? Different DNA?
You make so many points in this post that I think are contradictory to your reasoning.
Maybe they just TRUST their police officers to be honest and compassionate human beings?

Well, I might believe this :
"Maybe they just TRUST their police officers to be honest and compassionate human beings?"
Except for the fact that our urban criminals kill other people, NON POLICE PEOPLE, at an alarming rate. Do they not trust their neighbors/peers to be honest and compassionate people either?
If it were ONLY the police that they were slaughtering, then I might think you had a good point. But in fact, they are violently acting out at everyone and anyone around them, including very young innocent children. Do they not find the local 6 yr olds 'honest and compassionate' enough either?
If they are unarmed, AND SO ARE THE CRIMINALS, then there is not an issue. Of course the cops can 'manage' in that situation.
Idk. Not shooting to avoid a protest while you are getting brutally beating by a criminal is like saying that I will not shoot a home invader that is trying to kill me. Because I want to avoid going to jail.
