Still Missing IL - Cory Rhinehart, 28, called 911, blood found, Zion, Lake County, 15 Mar 2019 *ARREST*

It strikes me as unusual that an unspecified member of the Zion PD would place what sounds like an “off the record” call about this case to his own personal acquaintance, a woman who identifies herself as a “family friend” (NOT a family member/relative) of the missing man. It also surprises me to hear that said police officer would make this seemingly-important request (that civilians pause their unofficial search efforts) to an individual rather than making the request publicly, to the community at large (as we’ve seen law enforcement do in other missing persons cases). Maybe this whole exchange is 100% aboveboard, and my skepticism is misplaced, but the quote did make me wonder if anyone in the missing man’s life would have a nefarious reason to want the search efforts curtailed...
Statements above reflect my perspective and my speculation only!

Family Continues Search For Missing Zion Army Veteran

An agonized mom pleaded Thursday night at a vigil for her son to come home.

"I figured he might see the thousand messages I put there for him," Andrea Holmes said of her missing son. "Mommy misses you. Mommy needs you. Please come home."

At a beachfront vigil in Zion Thursday night, family, friends and even strangers gathered for 28-year-old Corey Reinhardt.

"I went everywhere today, everywhere for my baby and I can't find him," Holmes said.

[...]

Thursday afternoon, crime tape was put up at the Gabriel Avenue apartment building where family says Cory's phone was traced to a 911 hang up Friday around 8 p.m.

A search had been planned to start here, but quickly changed to a beach-side vigil.

Deidra Collins is a family friend.

"Due to some new discoveries he did not want to contaminate any new possible evidence or anything that could potentially hinder work they're doing," she said.

The two big Q's are: who's apt is this and where are they? And is the blood Cory's or the apt owner?

Cory is missing and he called police but ended the call before connecting. Police traced it to an apartment where blood was found.
They better have the apartment owner being interrogated hard

Does anyone know...

Is the apartment owner missing as well?
How long will it take LE to determine whose blood was found in the apartment?

I'm thinking that the amount of blood found in the apartment and the splatter patterns would be indicative of a homicide making a search unnecessary and likely to compromise any evidence in the immediate area. Not what I would wish to believe but IMO, likely.

Looks like he had a breakup in the last few months and it is possible he has kids with one or more of his exes. He has a lot of people that love and miss him and his poor mom is out of her mind.

From this, we have the following facts:
Zion military veteran Cory Rhinehart missing since Friday
Family, Zion Police Seek Missing And Endangered Army Vet

9 a.m. on Friday, March 15 He was last seen by his family wearing black hospital scrubs, black Converse Chuck Taylor tennis shoes and a black pea coat and was heading to work.

- He did not make it to work.

Around 8 p.m. Friday, police say a call was placed to 911 from Cory's phone

"It was hung up. And then his phone was off," said his mother Andrea Holmes.

Monday, March 18 Police appeal to public for help

Police traced the 911 call and went to an apartment in the 2100 block of Gabriel Avenue (which is near his home) to investigate. There, they found human blood on the door, walls and floor, WGN-TV reports

Friday, March 18/22 An apartment in that building has now been taped off with crime scene tape and official designated a crime scene, police said. His family said ... human blood found in the apartment has been sent to a crime lab for testing to identify who it belongs to.

Zion police Thursday laid down markers at the apartment building and took molds of tire tracks in the mud nearby.

Drove passed the apartment yesterday and today. The front of the building on one side is taped off with caution tape. There is some caution tape on the upper floor balcony as well (can’t recall if that’s a two or three story building. There is one police cruiser parked outside. Yesterday it was in front of the building and today it’s a half block north across a busy street. Very strange. Thought yesterday they may have received the DNA results and taped it off waiting for a search warrant. But with it still like that today, I can’t figure it out. They are not keeping people out of the parking lot or away from anything that isn’t taped. Crazy

Perhaps this is a savvy & responsible law enforcement officer trying to keep a member of the community from causing distraction/trouble/problems???

Blood on the walls is NOT a good sign. Bloodstains are classified into three basic types: passive stains, transfer stains and projected or impact stains. Passive stains include drops, flows and pools, and typically result from gravity acting on an injured body. Transfer stains result from objects coming into contact with existing bloodstains and leaving wipes, swipes or pattern transfers behind (ie: a bloody shoe print or a smear from a body being dragged). Impact stains (such as spatter on walls) result from blood projecting through the air and are usually seen as spatter, but may also include gushes, splashes and arterial spurts. I'm sure LE has already analyzed it but if the blood on the wall included an arterial spurt, whoever shed the blood is likely not alive.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force called in to assist on case of missing Zion man
[...]

Christopher Covelli, a spokesman for the Major Crimes Task Force, said the force was asked to assist in the search for Rhinehart, but that the Zion Police Department is the lead agency and will handle any public release of information.

Covelli did confirm the task force is usually called out for serious cases such as homicides, inmate deaths, officer-involved shootings and “heinous crimes.”

On Friday afternoon Andrea Holmes, Rhinehart’s mother, talked briefly.

“We are going to a break from talking to the press,” Andrea Holmes said outside the home she shares with her husband, Melvin, in Beach Park.

Search intensifies for missing endangered Army veteran from Zion
[...]

Now, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is assisting the Zion Police Department with the investigation.

The family has conducted their own searches throughout Zion with no results. There has been no phone, bank or social media activity of Rhinehart’s since he disappeared.

The family had scheduled a search party with the public for Thursday evening; however, due to new developments, police asked the family to cancel it because they were worried it may interfere with their investigation.

So his family is no longer talking to the press, they have been advised not to search at this time, and the apartment/neighborhood is under surveillance...

Oh wow - this is the first I am hearing about Cory. I was actually in Zion on the 16th. A coworker lives nearby, in Waukegan, I am going to pick her brain. Do we have the name of the apartment complex by chance? I haven't read all the articles yet.

This is a very helpful synopsis--would you mind sharing the original source? TIA!

OT: I've stayed in the RV park/campground on the lake.
