"Daisy Hayes was last seen on May 1 at her apartment in a senior complex on the 6300 block of South Minerva Street in the Woodlawn neighborhood...

Her daughter, Teresa Smith said police have not shared anything with her about the investigation. She said they did tell her they looked at security camera tapes, but didn’t say what they saw.

The department said in a statement, “detectives continue the investigation as a priority case.”

Smith said police took the outfit Hayes was last seen wearing.

The woman’s daughter said money was missing from her apartment, along with her phone and keys.

She said she fears the worst and said she just wants answers.

The woman’s niece, Janice Smith, the last family member to have seen her on May 1, said she was smiling when she dropped Hayes off at her building after a visit. She said she seemed perfectly fine.

Hayes was described as a 85-pound, 5-foot-2 black woman with gray hair and brown eyes, police said. Anyone with information was asked to call Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8380."
Family, Friends Demand Answers For Missing Woodlawn Woman

"Hayes, a long-time community leader, went missing at the beginning of May, and according to relatives police searched her apartment and found all of her identification inside...
The family says that Hayes doesn’t have any medical conditions or any history of Alzheimers, and that it’s not like her to go missing without informing anyone."

Her family said she was last seen on May 1 in the city's Woodlawn neighborhood after her niece dropped her off in the 6300-block of South Minerva Avenue at the senior apartment building where she lived.

Hayes' family said they searched her apartment and found all her belongings and her ID inside.

They say there is security footage that may help explain her whereabouts, but that the management of Hayes' building won't let them see it, although they have given it to investigators.

There's an update on local news regarding this lady in the last couple of days but nothing actually new to report. They are trying to keep her in the public's eye. Woodland is one of the more suffering and violent neighborhoods in Chicago with a huge gang issue and a lot of boarded-up homes and crime. We live in Chicago and won't drive anywhere near there. It's unknown if her building has controlled access. If not -anyone could have wandered in and been lying in wait for a resident that would have cash and/or prescription meds to steal. Burglary is a big issue here. Crime Data for Woodlawn, Chicago, IL - Trulia

It appears her building does have controlled access:

"Visitors have to sign in with a security guard, and no one is allowed to roam the hallways."

I hope the charges stick this time. Sounds like he's gotten away with this more than once.

Why won't cops search Indiana landfill for remains of missing Chicago senior?
On Friday afternoon, authorities said Jackson, who lived in the same CHA building, has been arrested in Memphis and is being charged with murder.

But there has been no effort to retrieve Hayes’ body,

“I was told her body is in a landfill and that there wasn’t any money or manpower to get the body because it would cost millions of dollars, and it would be like looking for a certain needle in a pile of needles,” said Teresa Smith, Hayes’ daughter.

What a horrific outcome. I’m so sad to hear this.

Cook County prosecutors believe she was killed and that her body is in a suitcase at an Indiana landfill that holds 400 tons of refuse.

On Thursday, a Judge ordered Jimmy Jackson — her ex-boyfriend who lived in the same apartment building with her — held without bail on a charge of first-degree murder in Hayes’ death.

The last time 65-year-old Hayes was seen, she was entering her 11th-floor apartment in a building in the 6300 block of South Minerva in Woodlawn.

Multiple security cameras on the floor recorded her entering her apartment at 8:30 p.m. May 1.

Reclaiming missing woman's body from landfill right thing to do
When a loved one disappears due to foul play and that person’s body is hidden or, in the case of Daisy Hayes, allegedly dumped in a landfill, relatives are left not only grieving but also agonizing over their inability to give the victim a proper burial.

I so understand the family's pain, but Chicago has a population of almost 3 MILLION people. Given just our single home has a full trash bin each week I can't imagine how much trash goes into the landfill and it's been six months since she was killed. I'm not sure if a search is even feasible at this point, but if it is, I hope they do it.

Murder trial: Man acquitted, security video shows him leaving missing woman's CHA housing apartment with large suitcase - ABC7 Chicago
[...]

"It snatched my heart out my body. All I could do is scream and just run out the courtroom, like 'what didn't you see?'" Smith said.

[...]

"You see him struggling with this suitcase. You see him actually put the suitcase in the dumpster. You actually see him take garbage from other dumpsters to put on top of her so it can be concealed. So I don't know, 'what more Diana Kenworthy need?' That was the judge."

The judge said the video, plus no sign of a struggle inside the apartment nor any biological evidence of a crime, was not enough to prove he killed her.
