Identified! IL - Grundy Co, BlkFem UP17621, 18-23, body in ditch at U.S. Rte 6, Oct'76 JoAnn "Vickie" Smith

Yeah, I wouldn’t take a DN identified update too seriously since they have a history of having to backtrack several cases because they jumped the gun. Better wait for an official announcement.

So the DN identified is like a maybe.
Essentially. It's likely but a few years back, before Amy Yeary was identified, her NamUs was briefly taken down before and DN said she was identified, before it came back up. So it's likely she is identified, just not 100%

I strongly believe she has been IDd because everything in combination (namus down, solved cases went up, marked as idd with DN) is consistent. There may still be an open investigation, many identifications are not released to thr public right away, with some there are months between id and release. And some cases (even if homicide) the names are permanently withheld.
Let us hope we get to know her name soon.

I'm wondering whether her being identified has given LE new leads as to who may have murdered her so may have requested her name not be released to the general public.

This particular agency has been pretty good about keeping this case in the news, so I suspect that we'll find out one way or another in the coming months.

WOW! Great news!

I had been emailing with Brandon Johnson regarding this Jane Doe over the years. He has never EVER given up. I’m so glad his hard work and determination to get her home has paid off.

Good news she has been identified. I was thinking about her case the other day wondering if she would be identified. Can't wait to find out who she was.

Just realized they are Central time zone. I’m Eastern, so jumped the gun a little bit. I was wondering why I couldn’t find it. Duh.
