If he planned this, the attorney could be handling the home selling process, and could from there handle getting the money wired into his bank account. Now obviously, the home being sold will raise red flags with LE, but again, unless they have a very specific reason to get access to bank records they aren't getting into those.

This guy could pretty easily have a million plus dollars in the bank depending on what the status of the home is. Now, given that he is divorced there is likely alimony, but if he has one million plus in liquid assets plus retirement accounts you can pretty comfortably live off that the rest of your life.

Little interesting article about jobs, and United.

United Airlines Outsourcing Management Jobs | One Mile at a Time

.......
Keep in mind that the airline isn’t able to lay off any employees through September 30, 2020, given that the airline received billions of dollars in aid through the CARES Act.
.......
As mentioned above, United Airlines is eliminating about 30% of management positions at the company, through a combination of voluntary packages and involuntary furloughs.

Well, there’s some great news on that front. United Airlines is once again hiring for many of the same management positions that have just been vacated. Isn’t that fantastic?!
......
Well, not so fast… the airline is now hiring for these jobs in India. If you go to United Airlines’ job search page, you’ll see the company is hiring for several management positions in Gurgaon, India. Some of these roles include the following:

  • Analyst, Network Planning
  • Senior Analyst, Network Planning
  • Senior Analyst, Revenue Strategy
  • Manager, Revenue Strategy
  • Senior Manager, Sales Program

Noting- I tried the job link and saw no jobs in India. I wonder if United took them down?

Hopefully, this isn’t taken the wrong way, but I wish the investigation part wasn’t mentioned. I would feel differently if a warrant was issued or someone else could be in danger (or heck, could/should someone be concerned ‍♀️)
, but just saying criminal investigation bothers me. It seems to leave such an open window for rumors, assuming, etc.

United later admitted they were posted by mistake.

I wonder how much gas he bought. It might tell us more about whether he expected to return to his vehicle.

Or if he just bought coffee...

If they were related to that, would Elmhurst be the lead? I don’t know if it would be Elmhurst or the headquarters of the GBTA in Washington DC. I think it would be DC. I think it could only be something he was being investigated for that happened in that area, Elmhurst, for them to be the lead.
I wondered this too - where did the original complaint come from?
I suppose Elmhurst could just be assisting another LE, by interviewing complainant etc.

As I mentioned earlier, my family member is
on a reduced schedule, called in on an "as needed" basis. So they're not totally laid off
or furloughed- YET, but expect it's coming
prior to Oct. 1st.
We've had people locally who were furloughed
from their job at a theme park and then spotted an ad for their job on a job site.
Could just be a legal way to get rid of some employees.

I wondered that as well.

There are no pending charges. Let's not jump from 'investigation' to 'charges'. Not all investigations lead to charges and he may never be charged with anything.
Thank you, Cubby — this was my error. Agree that “charges” was the wrong word. It’s only an investigation and that’s important to get right.

Chief Dave Pederson of the Department of Law Enforcement for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County said there were no park-issued surveillance cameras that could have captured images of Cefolia in the parking lot where his vehicle was found on August 8, adjacent to the Watergall Glen Forest Preserve. Authorities have said that Cefolia was known to go running there. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is not in possession of any still or video footage of Cefolia in the area of the forest preserve, Pederson said. It does not appear that investigators know exactly when Cefolia’s vehicle arrived at the preserve.

United Airlines exec Jake Cefolia missing for three weeks; police say there is no surveillance footage from forest preserve where his vehicle was found

I was just going to say that I was there this morning & saw no security cameras. If there are any in the area, they’d all be for Argonne (which has its main entrance & many service/receiving entrances all along Cass Ave leading up to the supposed area where Jake’s was found).

Maybe someone can help me understand how this could happen? I would think he would have to sign papers. Can you do this online? He put his house in a trust on August 13, 2020. Recorded August 14, 2020.

He probably mailed /submitted online the QCD to have it changed to his Trust before he went missing.
Some courthouses are only open for online/mail only during this COVID19 fiasco and most clerks are working from home so documents filed are a slow process right now.
It could have been submitted months ago and they are just now getting it filed.

So no video at park. But they do have video at a gas station? How did they get that? Did someone have access to his credit card or bank account? Did someone remember him being there and give it to LE? Pretty concerning to me that they make the assumption he’s in the park just because his car was found there. Seems like a good car dumping spot.

From the link you provided :)
I mean, how can you tell it was signed by someone who had Power of Attorney? I may be dense, but I can’t tell where it shows that.

When I first started reading this thread, I was firmly in the self-harm camp. With a few details that have emerged, I am now more open to the possibility of a voluntary disappearance. I will preface my further thoughts by saying that I have learned many things from following disappearances and suicides both here and elsewhere that are relevant to my position:

1. The pandemic has taken an enormous toll on the mental health of many across all socio-economic classes. The rates of suicide, addiction, domestic violence (incl. murder-suicides) have increased significantly (IMO since I don't have a link handy). Although there may have been a triggering event or two, it is possible that depression, addiction, or both began long before his disappearance.

2. People who choose to end their own lives do surprisingly mundane, routine things before doing so and rarely are there indicators or signs of it in advance. Habits are hard to break. Filling up your car when it's empty. Locking your doors. Sometimes hindsight is 20/20, but rarely.

3. Awareness of and understanding of (and avoidance of) video surveillance by the general public is vastly overestimated by true crime followers who are well-versed in the ins and outs of how prevalent cameras are and how frequently and urgently it is collected and analyzed by LE. Even if he thought he'd be seen at the gas station or glanced up and saw a camera, at that point there was nothing to hide. I don't think most people think cameras are at outdoor park areas.

4. And, most importantly, bodies in heavily wooded areas are very very hard to find, and despite multiple searches and experienced teams, are often missed, especially in summer months. Cadaver and search dogs are not infallible either, despite their amazing abilities. Sometimes not until winter when vegetation is gone are they found, usually by change or by drone.

So, the above is why I still lean very much towards self-harm (75% odds) rather than voluntary disappearance (25% odds) at this point. The one thing in favor of voluntary disappearance for me at this point is that he mentioned to his ex-wife about "going off the grid."The criminal investigation, depending on what it is, certainly could be a catalyst, but it could be for self-harm just as easily as for voluntary disappearance. Him not taking his phone and Apple Watch - only rules out "accident on a hike" in my book.

In some ways, this reminds me of the disappearance of Centre County DA Ray Gricar. I just hope we aren't waiting for answers as long as we are still waiting in that one.
