Hypothetically or questions really.

1. Is it confusing to those that have followed cases awhile why there are no press conferences, updates, rewards or interviews with family?

2. In what types of scenarios would Elmhurst be the lead LE agency?

3. What can we assume was done with his car?

4. What exactly can (or will) LE do right now? Monitor bank accounts? (I wouldn’t think so)

5. Have they gathered neighbors camera footage?

6. Did they follow through with getting toll info?

7. Did they find out why his vehicle tag was run in the first place?

8. How long till United replaces him? Or makes an announcement?

9. Did they follow up with the inconsistencies in the stories about breaking up with gf#1? Is that relevant?

@Cubby congrats... and wishing you continued resolve and strength. A very impressive trait to me is someone that can admit their struggles.

If there are no leads and he could be voluntarily missing there is nothing they can do. I still find it absurd that his bank gave any information in the first place. If I were him and I resurfaced I would certainly consider a lawsuit against the bank for that.

Finally, like with any missing persons case, if there are no leads, there is nothing really that can be done.

Well I have seen a few missing cases where they do interview people, look at traffic cameras & tolls, make pleas to the community, have press conferences, ask for tips, set up rewards, crime stoppers. Some cases where there seems to be more suspicion of foul play but really no evidence to indicate that, they seem to do more as well.

Local media is key. They do not seem to be pushing for info, covering searches or anything to help awareness. How many people locally are even aware? Is it possible that someone, somewhere could have crossed his path and have a “tip”?

That was going to be my post. I had no idea until reading and following missing persons here that many people choose to hang themselves.

Omg, I never even correlated the two. Looking up only made me think of looking to heaven.

Local media really isn't reporting much beside the number of murders in Chicago, looting when it happens, protests and covid information.

It is odd family hasn't made any statements, even through a designated family spokesperson.

Who other than Elmhurst police, would investigate a missing persons case from the city of Elmhurst? Jake was last seen at his home in Elmhurst.

I think the tags were run because the car was abandoned and was in an area it shouldn't have been in the overnight hours. More areas than not have no overnight parking. Police run tags all the time. Most people never know their tags are run.

I think too much is being made about the bank records. Checking bank records is standard procedure in every adult missing persons case I have followed. I don't believe they are divulging personal information, but rather checking in a yes or no manner.

I don't know if toll/I-pass records would be helpful in this case. The nearest intersection to Jakes home is St. Charles Rd. and Route 83. It's a straight shot down Route 83 to Bluff Rd, a single right turn to where his car was found. There are no tolls on Route 83. 83 also intersects with Butterfield Rd.

Banking records or I pass could help with determining where Jake was between the time he purchased gas and the time his car was found.

1005 agree Cubby- and I think this is voluntary in one way or another. Everything I've seen so far points that way

I actually meant what types of criminal cases would Elmhurst be the lead on?

So I read he was wearing hiking boots and pants (not jogging pants) in the video from the gas station. Then his car is located at the preserve, am I the only one thinking he hiked his way out of the preserve to a pre destined spot with everything he needed, or met someone at the end of the trek.
IMO, if disappearance intentional, agree that he's had some form of assistance from friend or associate. And if not, at least one person has an inkling of his intent.

It was located at his home along with his smartwatch.
So, if his disappearance was intentional, he didn't want to be tracked. And, if that is the case, he most likely didn't leave much evidence on the phone or watch. So he could have used a couple of burners, perhaps. IMO

Well people can go missing if they want to. They can’t access a missing adults bank account, phone records, Facebook or anything without a warrant or a court order. They don’t miraculously watch missing peoples bank accounts. Now if family members have access and are able to do that that’s a different story.
But, if he was in process of being investigated for something......perhaps warrants can be obtained to access accounts? IMO

I looked this trail up on TrailRunProject, a trail running app. A reviewer said the trail is a "multi-use crushed limestone path", one "with few obstacles, making it great for running". In other words, it's a basic greenway-type trail system with no rough terrain. As a trail runner and hiker, I would not choose hiking boots for hiking/walking/running on this trail, as they'd be unnecessarily heavy. I suspect most runners there would use standard running shoes rather than more heavy duty trail running shoes.

The trail apparently has no shortcuts so once you start it you would either turn back early or be committed to doing the whole 9.7 mile loop. Wearing boots and having left his phone and smartwatch behind, I can't see that he would have gone there with any intent of either hiking or running around the loop.
So, what if the plan was to go off-trail to reach another destination, would hiking boots be beneficial? He was familiar with this territory.

While there are forest preserves in the area, they small and are all surrounded by other suburbs of Chicago. Most likely near most of these there are cameras from local businesses or residences.
There really isn't what I would call true hiking in the Chicagoland area. Most forest preserve "trails" are very wide and usually have gravel. The small trails are just dirt but are still wide. You couldn't hike and escape like you would through foothills, into mountains and go down the other side, ykwim?

OK, got it. Thanks. So it's unlikely he left the trail without being caught on camera.

Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve is a forest preserve in southern DuPage County, Illinois. It is known for its waterfall, which actually is a dam, which is in its ravine. It completely surrounds Argonne National Laboratory. Wikipedia

Any crime which occurred within the city of Elmhurst.
Understood, but I’m still curious. If it was for something he physically did in Elmhurst I understand. What if it was something *just* involving him, but transpired on a computer by chance? Something like illegal online gambling, insider trading, child 🤬🤬🤬🤬... would all those be head by Elmhurst? Could be something even like failing to pay child support I suppose. I hate the dangling of the case is there because it does in my opinion affect the possibilities.

I will say this, if he is has willingly tried to go off the grid, those banks IMO should be liable for providing that info. As I have stated, I work for a bank and to me that is completely unacceptable they would share that and just in general from a privacy point of view if I wanted to go off the grid I would be furious if my bank told anyone my account activity.

Honestly, this should really scare anyone that LE could call your bank and simply ask for account information in this manner.
I agree

The only time we or I have given LE or an investigator any account info is when they have provided a warrant or subpoena for it.

I would be livid if my bank just handed it over to anyone.

Of course, we don't know if LE had a subpoena for JC's banking transactions or not, I would like to believe LE did have one.

It is just worded in a way that sounds like LE just called and received the info. YIKES.

There is also the possibility he went for treatment and didn't want anyone to know.

Failing to pay child support would be handled by the state or either parties attorney. I don't think it's that since his last court appearance on his divorce proceedings had a modification in February of this year.

I honestly think it pertains to something that occurred while he was responsible for caring for his child/ren. It could be Elmhurst began an investigation. Elmhurst would decide whether criminal charges would be brought.

Or, if criminal charges are not brought a civil case involving the department of children and family services may be opened. Police officers are mandatory reporters and would be required to report possible child neglect and or endangerment to DCFS. If the allegations are determined to be 'founded' the state steps in and may require the parent to attend a substance abuse screening and possible treatment for drug or alcohol related issues.

I don't think any of the other crimes you suggested would be headed by Elmhurst.

Food for thought. If Jake was a victim of foul play and the perpetrator had access to and was using Jakes bank accounts, shouldn't LE use that as a means to investigate? If he were a victim of foul play and police didn't utilize that avenue of investigation shouldn't Jakes ex sue on behalf off his kids?

This isn't some investigation into *how* he spends his money, but rather if he is accessing his money.

And if he wants to walk away from his life, he can legally do so. Simply let police know through his attorney he is alive and well and wishes no contact, case closed.
