this is so so wrong. Prayers for Laterria Smith. She tried to get an OP, he was threatening her FROM prison. He warned her he was coming for her and the judge denied the OP because "he's in jail and can't hurt her"

Did the judge not bother to check that he was up for parole within weeks?

This poor poor woman. she dumped him in 2015 for God's sake. And this whole time he has been waiting for the chance to kill her.

He was actually paroled back in the fall of last year and immediately came to her home and threatened her. He was sent BACK to prison and then released AGAIN only for him to come after her again.

THIS should not be. We need to do better at protecting citizens from the monsters. Particularly when they tell us with their words and deeds that they are indeed monsters.

RIP Jayden :(

Sorry no links. I had a whole long post full of them but got a call and accidently wiped out my draft post. I just do not have it in me to go find them all again.

Horrible horrible case. Highlights everything wrong with what passes for justice in America.

"This mom's life is now forever changed. Along with being brutally attacked, stabbed multiple times, dealing with that trauma, she has to face the fact that she will never see, touch, hug her 11-year-old son," Snelling said. :(

Some of the first headlines I saw billed this as a man with 3 orders of protection against him going to Laterria Smith's house the day after he was released on parole to attack her. That is a drastic oversimplification.

Smith had a relationship with Brand 15 years ago and had an order of protection stemming from that. He was paroled in October 2023 for charges related to a home invasion. (USA Today)
January 30th, Brand sent Smith threatening text messages. (2:19 NBC News) According to Smith, Brand "sent me several text messages saying he would kill me and my family he would wait outside my house and shoot me. I have pics" (2:32 NBC News)
February 1st, Brand went to Smith's home and tried to open the door. (2:21 NBC News) He turned himself in on an unknown date and was reincarcerated. (NBC Chicago) Chief of Detectives confirms he was reincarcerated because of this violation, and court records reveal he had violated orders of protection in the past, including for Smith. (ABC 13)
February 21st, A judge denies Smith's request for an emergency protection order. (CBS News) Screenshots from that request below.
February 26th, "New records obtained by the CBS 2 Investigators show the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, which handles parole decisions, acknowledges members had no idea that the ex-girlfriend was working to get another order of protection against Brand in February, despite him going back to prison for violating his parole, including by trying to break into the woman's home weeks before." (CBS News)
March 12th, Brand was again released on parole and was given documents including a reminder of the order of protection against him. (NBC Chicago)
March 13th, Brand forced his way into Smith's home while she was on the phone with her mother and began stabbing her. Jayden Perkins attempted to help her and was stabbed several times as well. At some point, Smith was able to lock herself in a bedroom, where Brand followed her and began kicking on the door. When the kicking stopped, Smith came out and found Jayden unmoving on the floor. Her other son, 6, was uninjured on the couch. A neighbor heard screams and called his mother. His mother went to the apartment and found the victims, at which point she called 911. Brand was captured on surveillance disposing of items and clothing and taking a train before he was ultimately met by his mother with a bag. He then changed his clothes. (NBC Chicago)

This wasn't a man who was paroled for home invasion and then went to go murder an ex girlfriend the next day. There were clear signs and multiple interactions with the criminal justice system that should have stopped this.

My thoughts are with his other victims as well. They must be thinking we tried to tell you. They must be thinking that could have been me or my child. They must be thinking he could slip through the cracks again and get out and hurt me.

I’m not a criminal justice hardliner. I believe people deserve chances to be reformed. Brand got those chances, and continually showed he was a danger who was unwilling to follow the rules placed upon him.

Hours after his 11-year-old brother was stabbed to death, a 5-year-old boy sat in a small, colorful “talking room” and described the “savaging” attack that also critically wounded their mother.

“I saw blood everywhere in my house,” the boy told a child advocate, his account of the home invasion and attack gushing forth almost as soon as the advocate introduced herself.

“He was about to kill my mom. … He was stabbing her.”

[Brand, who has opted to represent himself in this case has requested the 5 year old's testimony/interview be thrown out]

But procedurally, the matter stands out even more as it unfolds at the busy Leighton Criminal Court Building. Brand is serving as his own attorney, arguing the case without the expertise of a licensed lawyer, and he has demanded a speedy trial — meaning the case is proceeding toward trial at a pace nearly unheard of in a building where murder cases can linger for years or even a decade.

Brand has filed a flurry of motions since the case began, some which appear to misunderstand fundamental elements of a criminal prosecution.
