Trial begins next January.

Did Gacy Turn Brian Dugan Into A Serial Killer?

CBS) A convicted murderer has invoked the name of another notorious serial killer as he attempts to avoid the death sentence. CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports that alleged serial killer Brian Dugan has claimed he was once molested by John Wayne Gacy.

Dugan has been convicted of two murders before and now he's facing the possibility of the death penalty for the 1983 murder and rape of 10-year-old Jeanine Nicarico. He confessed to the brutal crime several years ago, but he has not yet been tried.

To help spare his life, Dugan's attorneys have been investigating his claim that as a teenager, he was sexually molested by Illinois' most notorious serial killer: John Wayne Gacy.

Cubby, I see you beat me to it with the Gacy connection. I don't think it should be used to spare his life, especially after reading this in the article you linked:

But the defense faces a daunting task in trying to make Dugan appear sympathetic. He was convicted of the July 15, 1984 murder of Donna Schnorr. He ran the 27-year-old Geneva nurse off the road and beat, raped and drowned her in a Kane County quarry.

Dugan went on a monthlong sex-crime binge afterward in which he attacked three young women -- all of whom survived.

Less than a year later, Dugan tried to abduct two girls June 2, 1985, in Somonauk. One escaped. Her friend, 7-year-old Melissa Ackerman, did not. Dugan raped and drowned the child. Authorities captured him a day later. He's been incarcerated ever since.

This article is long but very interesting. Dugan was well on his way to being a serial killer long before he may or may not have met up with Gacy:

...the FBI had accumulated hundreds of pages of background on him. Those records have never been made public - until now.

I remember hearing about Melissa Ackerman on the local news when she was reported missing...I was only 10 years old at the time. I was so sad when I found out she'd been killed. I'm glad to see the guy is in jail :furious:

This case is a lot more complex than I realized at first. Did anyone read about the two hispanic guys, one of whom spent 12 years in jail over this because, for whatever reason, he either gave or police forced some kind of confession?

The DNA evidence on Dugan is not an exact match and it seems as though he initially agreed to confess during a plea bargain offer by police, and when he wasn't guaranteed not to get death for it, he clammed up. I'm always suspect of this kind of "confession."

Dugan is a 🤬🤬🤬 anyway and deserves to fry either way -- I just hope the right guy doesn't walk away because the police think they've got their man (again).

This story makes me question my religious beliefs.

How sad and terrible not only for Jeanine, but for her family.

I added the Nicarico Memorial Literacy Fund to the Links page of www.whokilledbetsy.com. I also contacted Tricia here at Websleuths and asked her to add it as a link to the main page -- I think it's an important charity and one that I would willingly donate to.

Justice is finally coming for Jeanine Nicarico.

Within the next couple of weeks, the jury will decide whether Brian Dugan stays in prison for life or gets the death penalty. In IL the death penalty is crippled by a moratorium.

Daily Herald has the most complete coverage, this has related links:

Wow. an innocent man was previously found guilty of doing this murder and was sentenced to death?

It boggles my mind that a jury could sentence someone to death on the basis of what had to be convoluted interpretations of the evidence. Thank God they didn't fry HIM, huh?

I don't know if this guy did it or not, but I won't be surprised if he is found guilty......it seems to be a trend to find every suspect guilty until he can later prove he is innocent. It took the previous "murderer" three trials to prove it wasn't him.

While THIS guy is a 🤬🤬🤬 and I hope and pray he never gets out of jail, I am still concerned that there remains the chance that the actual murderer is roaming the streets.

Here is the best case history I have ever seen about the Nicarico case:

By the way, today the jury decided Brian Dugan is eligible for the DP.

Now they decide if he will get that. He is already serving 2 life sentences + 215 years for other rape/murders.

Very good essay! Thank you so much for sharing the link. There's a lot of info.

I am uneasy that prosecutors did not trust Dugan's confession and indeed said he had many details of the crime incorrect. I wonder what details he got wrong, and how were prosecutors able to get past that? I would feel so much better if the DNA evidence was 100%.

After 10 hours, jury sentences Dugan to death

After deliberating about 10 hours over two days, a DuPage County jury has sentenced Brian Dugan to death for the rape and murder of Jeanine Nicarico 26 years ago.
Dugan showed no emotion as the verdict was announced shortly after 2:30 p.m. A cry of "Yes!" rose from the family sections. The slain girl's mother and sisters wept.

Family doesn't want daughter's life defined by death

As a third grader, Jeanine Nicarico had some difficulty reading, but she also had a good teacher who worked with her and inspired her, and as a consequence, she blossomed. From that piece of Jeanine's life, and from Christine's talk with her colleagues at River Woods school, came the founding of the Nicarico Memorial Literacy Fund.

"It really was a very heart-warming feeling to know that people wanted to do something that could help other children in the schools. It made us feel very good -- very, very good," said Pat Nicarico, Jeanine's mom.
In its 14 years, the fund has dispersed over $150,000 in grants to promote literacy, bring together readers and authors, and kids from different schools that have a book in common.

<snip>

Tom and Pat Nicarico have retired out of state, but they're back for this Sunday's 9th annual Run for Reading, the principal funder for the literacy effort. It is a chance to celebrate a life, a mission, and in the process, smile a lot.

<snip>

To learn more about the Nicarico Literacy Fund and this Sunday's run for reading visit www.nicaricoliteracyfund.org. Four-hundred have signed up for the run this far, but there's room -- for the streets are wide and the road is long.

I'm local and was unaware of this. Nice to see this done in Jeanine's name, so I thought I'd share with other WS'rs and readers.

I grew up in Naperville not too far from the Nicarico family (but I did not know them). I was in high school when Jeanine was murdered. This was the first moment when innocence was lost; I realized the power of death and that there are evil people in this world. I have followed this case ever since (and all of the circus side-shows that went with it). I'm glad to see that Dugan will finally get what he deserves.
