GUILTY IL - Jeanine Nicarico, 10, abducted & murdered, Naperville, 25 Feb 1983

Jeanine Nicarico is the reason I am here. Her killer is the reason I look for hiding places every time I start a new job. He is the reason I'm still afraid of the dark.

When I was 10 years old, sitting in Naperville's St. Raphael's church, they announced that another 10 year old church member had been kidnapped and killed.

I did not know Jeanine but it was so easy to imagine her horror and pain. As I read today about another abduction and death of a 10 year old, it makes those memories even fresher. I've always included her family in my prayers and today I add a new family to my list.

RIP Jeanine Nicarico and Hailey Owens.

It's not the number of murders that sets Brian Dugan apart as a serial killer but their brutality, the young ages of his victims and the random way he chose them. Between 1974 and 1985, he victimized at least a dozen girls and women, raping seven and killing three — Jeanine Nicarico, 10; Donna Schnorr, 27; and Melissa Ackerman, 7 — over the final three years...

In a series of interviews with the Tribune at Stateville Correctional Center, Dugan readily admitted that he is a psychopath — manipulative, incapable of emotion, prone to violence. What's more, he acknowledged that he remains a danger to society, susceptible to a "very strong rage" and a lack of impulse control that, he said, had contributed to his violence...

He addressed unanswered questions, some that still nag at those whose lives he forever changed. He spoke about why he killed some victims but let others live, whether he was responsible for any unsolved slayings and if he would have murdered again if he hadn't been arrested for Melissa's murder that June morning in 1985.

Jeanine Nicarico was the first case I was ever interested in. I was 6 years old and lived in the Western suburbs as well. It was also the first time I found out the police could get things wrong. It a relief to know that the justice system finally after all this time got it right. She will forever be the case that sticks with me. The reason I am into true crime. The reason I am into true justice.
