GUILTY IL - Mya Lyons, 9, stabbed to death, Chicago, 15 July 2008

But, what about the uncle? He should have seen the blood evidence in the van before they put her in it to take her to the hospital? Or, she was already in the van when he called to the uncle to help him? These statements from the dad and the uncle had better match up, or he is in trouble.
I do have a problem with LE waiting since last summer to charge him. If they had the evidence, why the wait? Anything could have happend in that period of time. If they could prove him a murderer, what if he killed someone else?
My jury is still out on this one until the evidence they have on him is exposed. Too bad Illinois doesn't have the same sunshine laws as Florida. Will have to wait until trial.
Thanks for the updates everyone.

Mya, may you rest in peace.

I too agree with having a problem with LE waiting since last summer to charge him. MSM has what seems to be contradictory info regarding the two charges against the father. In one it says the crimes are not related and another the chose to wait to charge at the same time. I'm curious how the defense will approach that...... I'm also a bit peeved they waited when it has been stated in MSM LE does not have a motive for Mya's murder. If they have no motive and knew this a year ago why was there no concern he might do it again, if he is the responsible party.

I wonder how long it will take for this to get to trial. I hope not years like the Vaughn case.

Mom of slain girl: 'I believe there is justice'

Minutes after returning to her South Side home with her brother late on a summer night, 9-year-old Mya Lyons was savagely beaten with a lockbox, choked and then repeatedly stabbed, prosecutors said today as the girl's father was ordered held without bail in her death.

As Richard Lyons shook his head, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney John Dillon detailed the gruesome injuries Mya suffered more than two years ago, allegedly at the hands of her father: More than 30 stab and "incised" wounds, most to her stomach, one across her neck and one to her back; several skull fractures; bruises on her shoulder, arm and back.

much more at link.

...I know it's not much of a help, but here is the link to Lyons' detail in the Cook County Jail inmate database http://www2.cookcountysheriff.org/search2/details.asp?jailnumber=2011-0119022. Note the next court date is 1/26 - it's not much, but so far the indexed / look up-able cases on the Cook County Court site are civil (or law or family or chancery) not criminal. Sigh - wish our system here wasn't quite to byzantine....

The only thing I can think of is emailing a media member - someone at the Trib or one of the news anchors.

Interestingly only the sexual assault charges are listed at the cook county inmate site. The murder charges are not listed.

I've found from other cases that site isn't always reliable, unfortunately.

Cubby, it may just be the way they index the charges in the CC Jail database - he is listed twice, which means (I have deduced) that there is more than one charge - Here is the main link to the Sheriff's site - under jail information, there is a search option: http://www.cookcountysheriff.org/

and next court date is June 13

Trial to start for father charged with killing daughter

9-year-old found stabbed to death in alley in 2008

Once the trial starts Monday with jury selection, jurors are expected to be taken to the home to see the allegedly staged crime scene for themselves. Records show Lyons and his wife no longer own the home after a bank foreclosed on it and it was sold at a sheriff's sale last summer.
Prosecutors have not given a motive for the slaying and are expected to put on a case based mostly on circumstantial evidence. They say spattered blood found in Lyons' 2000 Chevrolet van, which he used to take the girl to Jackson Park Hospital, indicates that Mya was possibly stabbed in the vehicle and not in the alley where she was found.

Praying for Mya's mom and loved one today and this week as the trial starts. Justice in Illinois takes too darn long. Another trial that has taken almost 6 years to start.

Justice is coming, Mya!

Trial underway for man accused of killing his daughter in 2008

A Cook County prosecutor told jurors today that Richard Lyons snapped in the summer of 2008 and beat his daughter to death or nearly to death, stabbed her and dumped her body in a vacant lot down the street to throw off police.

"He made it look like some crazy maniac had done this," Assistant State's Attorney Fabio Valentini said as Lyons' trial in the murder of his 9-year-old daughter Mya opened at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
