The parents of an infant boy have been charged with his murder after the 3-month-old died in a St. Louis, Missouri hospital from multiple severe injuries.

Illinois State Police (ISP) issued a statement Wednesday which said Logan Hutchings, 21, and Sophia Kelly, 21, have both been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

The three-month-old was admitted to a children's hospital in St. Louis with a skull fracture and multiple rib fractures, according to a statement from ISP. Medical staff at the hospital pronounced the baby boy deceased as a result of these injuries on June 14. He was in the care of Hutchings and Kelly in Pinckneyville prior to being admitted to the hospital, a police statement said.

Logan Hutchings faced a bench trial in Perry County for the murder of his son, Ocean Hutchings, who passed away on June 14, 2022. Online court records indicate that Hutchings pleaded not guilty to the three murder charges and a jury last week acquitted him of the charges.

The County Journal reports that although Ocean’s death stemmed from foul play, the presiding judge said “the burden of proof was not met” that Hutchings was the one who harmed the baby.

The courts in Illinois have given up trying to decide who beat a three-month-old baby to death in a family home - freeing both parents.

Ocean Hutchings suffered broken ribs and a shattered skull in the care of parents Logan Hutchings and Sophia Kelly, before dying from his injuries in June 2022.

Medical examiners ruled the death a homicide, but Hutchings, 22, was acquitted, and Kelly had charges dropped over the weekend after Perry County Court could not decide who had been at home at the time.

Judge Gross said there was no testimony from anyone who saw Hutchings attack the child, and that the prosecution could not prove beyond reasonable doubt that he was Ocean's killer.

Kelly, whose jury trial was penciled for May 1, then had her charges dismissed as well, but she faces a status hearing on Wednesday in her bid to regain custody of her older son from the state.

She revealed that Hutching's defense attorneys insisted that the attack could have occurred at any time in a five-day window, despite her telling prosecutors exactly when she believes it was carried out.

And she said that prosecutors relied heavily on her evidence to bring their charges against Hutchings.

'I worked with the prosecutor for 15 hours on this case and I had a lot of trust in her and we're both very angry about this all,' she said on Monday.

'I want to ask the judge what proof they didn't have.

'I testified for almost two-and-a-half hours on the stand, I told them everything I knew and it still wasn't good enough.

I don't even know what to say! I'm shocked and feel sick to my stomach! They should have just charged them both and let a jury decide. I'm sure one of them would have flipped on the other.
