Who knows how many suicides are due to this? I have no wish to see offending pedos go free, but this is just sad. I know of a defendant in Mich. who was sentenced to chemical castration and when he was released, he continued to get the treatment by his private physician.

Kudos to this man. How horrific to go to that length to protect someone from yourself. I believe a great number of suicides are potential pedos. I feel horribly sorry for him, he's a victim too. I can't imagine living with the idea you'd hurt a child.

You know what bothers me most about "castration" as a solution for sexual offenders: I hate to sound rude, gross, BUT even without a penis these offenders STILL have fingers and tongues...either of those can ruin a child's life as well, it's not just a penis...not to mention only body parts but "foreign objects" are ALWAYS available...this can hurt a child as badly as a penis any day.
If someone is an SO won't he get off in ANY way possible? He doesn't have to have a penis to derive sexual pleasure....ugh....sick....

I don't know. I've never been a pedophile. I do know others into bdsm do things called "age play" and whether there is a link or not, I don't know. I thought all sex was mostly a mind thing.

Now, I am with dee here-I wonder if pedophelia is a sexual preference? I mean the true pedos don't stop-it is the whole story from the pursuit to the seduction etc. Look at the guy they just picked up from Canada in Thailand. He had his age range he was attracted to. He knew he was busted-and he heads right back to Thailand, and sends his contact out to get him some boys which is how he was caught. He couldn't even lay low when he needed to.

I just said that pedophilia is a sexual orientation that cannot be cured. It's a little more involved than just a mind thing. I also cited a journal article regarding an MD's opinion on the matter.

There are hormones and impulses that affect the brain in order to determine sexual orientation that are not consciously involved. Just as you can not chosen your sexual orientation, neither can they.

The key is legal responsibility with pedophilia and the other "paraphelias." If you have a gender identity issue and you are attracted to the same sex you are of the age of consent (the two of you) and you both consent, well that is quite a different issue then if you are attracted to children and you decide to act on that attraction when you are an adult. I view it like alcoholism or an addiction to crack-don't fall off the wagon because the consequences are going to devastate a lot of people. :twocents:

I think there are some varieties here. A simple pedophile is sexually attracted to children. You could be sexually attracted to men - and still choose not to have sex with them, let alone to force yourself on them. But then there are those that have compulsions on top of that - not only sexually attracted, but have compusions that are uncontrollable or nearly so, to do something - to have sex, to use force, etc. If they're attracted to adults - they're rapists. If they're attracted to children, we still call them peodophiles, but I'm not sure if they are entirely the same thing.

I think both people sexually attracted to children, but otherwise normal and able to control themselves; and people sexually attracted and driven by compulsions to rape children and hurt them, even if they know it is wrong; may exist. This guy was obviously in group 2 - he's got the compulsions, and they're strong enough he knows he may not be able to control himself, even when he knows it is very wrong.
