The teenage girl found dead Monday in an alley near 20th and Pennsylvania. The girl is believed to be between the ages of 14 and 18. The sheriff's department described her as an African American girl, 5 ft. 2 in. tall and 117 lbs. with short black hair and pierced ears.

She was found wearing an orange or red t-shirt with the words 'SUPERGIRL POWER' and the Superman logo on it, as well as size large blue Champion brand pants with gray stripes, a red size 32B bra, and blue and black Nike Air Max Plus size seven sneakers.

Police released a photograph of her t-shirt

Oh my gosh, this is awful. Maybe done by a group of other girls?

Or a group of certain boys? An AA girl with a logo “supergirl power”. Beaten to death speaks hate.

She was just so young. I haven't seen anything so far about the circumstances of her disappearance or whether or not she was believed to have initially left of her own accord and eventually was intercepted by the wrong people or if she was abducted from the very beginning.

It seems that she hadn't been dead for very long before her body was discovered, meaning she was alive for almost the entire period of time between when she was last seen and when she was found murdered.

I think that if she was abducted, they probably kept her captive for quite some time. The beating and being chained to a pole are very contemptuous. I think she was killed by someone with some sort of personal vendetta against her. Even though it appears as if she had been alive for around two weeks after going missing from Chicago, I think it's more likely that whoever killed her was someone she had known well before she left / was taken from home.

Edited to add: Those NCMEC reconstructions are some of the best and most accurate that I've ever seen.

How sad that her own family didn't care enough to report her missing. Thank goodness her friends cared enough to do do. Rest in peace, Takaylah.

She was reported missing by a representative from a Chicago shelter about two weeks before she was found shot to death in a city alley.

It was unclear why Tribitt was reported missing by a shelter representative.

She was not believed to a be a ward of the state when she was reported missing Sept. 1

The coroner's office gathered DNA samples from Tribitt's family in September, after a composite sketch of Tribitt was released and several potential family members came forward.

The Lake County coroner's office was unable to use the dental records to confirm her identity because of how young she was when the records were collected.

Deon Simmons, 35, was wanted in the slaying of Takaylah Tribitt, who had been reported missing in Chicago, Nick Gonzalez, inspector for the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, told The (Northwest Indiana) Times.

Simmons was taken into custody without incident about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday on Chicago's South Side, Gonzalez said. It wasn't clear which charges he may face.

Detectives with the Lake County/Gary Metro Homicide Unit worked with DNA and social media search warrants over the past year, Gary police Cmdr. Jack Hamady said.

“They got a lead and kept on that lead, and uncovered some great evidence,” he said.

He was arrested Tuesday morning in Chicago in connection to the homicide of Takaylah Tribitt, Lake County sheriff’s office spokeswoman Pamela Jones said in an email.

The Sun-Times isn’t naming the man because Jones couldn’t confirm if charges were filed.

Tribitt was found by utility workers in an alley Sept. 16, 2019, near East 20th Avenue and Pennsylvania Street in Gary, Jones said.
...
I would like to commend all of the officers involved in investigating this case and making an arrest,” Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in the email. “I’m especially proud of how officers from several agencies shared information and resources to make progress in the case.”

He is being held in Chicago pending extradition proceedings, Jones said.

I'm so glad that Takaylah is finally going to get some justice. What was done to her was absolutely horrific.

I am very curious to see what the connection was (if there was any) between Takaylah and Deon. I am also hoping that we get to learn more of the circumstances of Takaylah's disappearance / murder as more information is released. It is great that justice is going to be served in this case once and for all.

Poor child. How did she end up alone in an alley in Gary, IN?

Rest in Peace, Sweet Girl.

So glad they finally found him and arrested him. Her case is so haunting and sad. I will be watching to see his connection to her. Not reported missing immediately at her age. Found just 35 minutes away, but not identified for weeks. :(

Rest peacefully Takaylah
