A 38-year-old Illinois mother was last seen at a gas station during Labor Day weekend — but she was not reported missing until early this year.

A friend of Tiffini Murphy claims that relatives tried to report her missing last year, but that their efforts were “not taken seriously.”

Murphy was last seen on Sept. 1 at Casey’s Gas Station in Lacon, which is now closed, with her live-in boyfriend who authorities say dropped her off at the gas station. There has not been any phone or social media activity since she disappeared.

She's been getting arrested regularly since 1998 on multiple charges of battery, assault, domestic violence, criminal tresspass and the like. (IL County Circuit Clerk of Courts). If the only witness that can affirm she was dropped off safely is the boyfriend, I'd be suspicious. Better close up of her face here. According to police, Tiffini Murphy was last seen at a gas station in Lacon, Illinois around 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. on September 1, 2018. The 38-year-old was reportedly dropped off by a witness, who police would not name to Dateline.

“We didn’t even receive a report that she missing until January 10,” Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Terry Hattan told Dateline. For that reason, he said authorities were unable to pull surveillance footage from the area. “Nobody reported her missing for an extensive period of time, so any videotape was recorded over. They don’t keep [the footage for] that long.”

Chief Deputy Hattan told Dateline that authorities have not conducted ground searches because they would not know where to start looking.

“My feeling right now is the only way to do searches would be to pull up a map and throw a dart and look where it lands,” he said. “But we’ve talked to the last person that reported seeing her and other individuals who had seen her shortly before that last time. And we’re still talking to some people.”

Authorities say the gas station where Tiffini was reportedly last seen has since closed for business. Tiffini did not have a cell phone at the time she disappeared, and Chief Deputy Hattan told Dateline that Tiffini’s social media and bank accounts have been inactive since she was last seen.

Missing since Sept 1, not reported (or taken seriously) until Jan 2019, and still just a few articles written in MSM about it. Something is not right. I can understand LE not taken it seriously the first time, within 24 hrs, etc....but how is a family or friend not banging down the doors of the LE after a few days/week/month.....what happened in Jan that all of sudden they decide to take seriously.

Additionally, very little information about her, kids, the boyfriend, etc anywhere on MSM, Social sites, etc.....

She has multiple open court cases including two criminal ones where she was charged with failure to appear in Fall of 2018 about the time she went missing. Use the search feature and find her by name. Her arrest history will come up and you can click on the individual cases. My gut is telling me she's not voluntarily missing though. EDELSTEIN — The remains of a missing Peoria County woman have been found and a man arrested in connection with her death.

Wayne H. Strawn II, the Marshall County sheriff, said the man, whose identity he didn’t release, would be in court at 8 a.m. Saturday on charges related to the death of Tiffini Murphy, who disappeared last year. The sheriff declined to identify the charges, but he did say Murphy’s death was due to foul play and that the charges would reflect that.

Berchtold to go on trial in September

A September trial date has been set for a Marshall County man, accused of murdering a woman two years ago.

39-year-old Gary Berchtold has plead not guilty to killing Tiffini Murphy.

He was indicted on four separate murder charges last September.

Berchtold allegedly shot Murphy to death at his house, burned her body, and dumped her ashes in a different location in August of 2018.

If convicted, he could face life in prison.

Court records show Berchtold is due back in Marshall County court for a scheduling conference on August 17th.

Then, as others have said, let’s amplify the concern about no one reporting her until January. Tiffini, I hope justice is served for you.
