  • ''Footage shows a horde of teenagers descending upon and then brutally attacking a woman who looks to be trying to enter her apartment
  • The violence was part of the 'teen takeover' of the Loop in Chicago on Saturday night, which quickly turned violent
  • The criminally destructive teens jumped on city buses, destroyed cars and shot one another as the Chicago police struggled to get the situation under control ''
''A terrified woman was filmed screaming as she was set on by a group of youngsters during an orgy of violence - which outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot has insisted 'wasn't mayhem.'

The 19-second video shot during Saturday's 'teen takeover' showed the group of mostly black teenagers crowding around a white woman attempting to enter her building, before pummeling her and moving on.

She could be heard screaming with fright at the attack - while her captors cackled with laughter. It's unclear what - if anything - prompted the attack, which was on the verge of beginning when the camera began to roll. ''

''More footage from the evening of chaos showed some teenagers jumping on top of a bus while others started a massive brawl after descending on Millennium Park and attempting to breach barricades.

Gunshots rang out, with rounds striking two teenage boys aged 16 and 17 who were reported to be in stable condition as of Sunday.

Cars were also left vandalized near East Washington Street in the Windy City, including a Tesla which was seized and torched.

The situation began Saturday when a crowd of more than a hundred rowdy teenagers turned violent as dozens torched and smashed cars while blaring music.

In total, 15 people were arrested including nine adults and six children.

Police were unable to control or hamper the damage done by the teens, whose numbers may have exceeded 1,000.''

...."Won't you please come to Chicago, "

Won't you please come to Chicago
For a ride

Don't ask Jack to help you
Cause he'll turn the other ear
Won't you please come to Chicago
Or else join the other side

Were these teens/young adults attacking people and vandalizing property in protest, or maybe it's political??

Or was that song about something else that I don't understand?

Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson said it best on Twitter where he said that what those teens did was unacceptable. However, the solution is not to demonize teenagers, but rather create spaces for them to gather safely and responsibly under adult guidance/supervision.

I wonder where that would be, and who would be doing the supervising?

I have no answer for the why they were attacking and vandalizing.
I also know that I won't be going anywhere close to Chicago.
The song lyrics were posted (in my twisted mind) as a mockery of what Chicago has become.

Stay out of Chicago!! ( IMO )

It's sad. Chicago used to have fun music venues, great restaurants... and, of course, Garrett's Popcorn (thank goodness they have mail order).

Yep
The Culture, the architecture, the concerts, the Lakefront, the Restaurants! All the sports! It is sadly not worth it anymore. It's dangerous even driving in towards the city! ( IMO) Almost a daily occurrence, one expressway in is shut down due to gun shots or violence. I certainly wouldn't feel safe walking Michigan Ave any more. It's a minefield of risk taking, IMO.

Nope

These kids don’t want that, and they have no supervision, which is why they’re out at all hours, speeding down Michigan Ave on dirt bikes and ATV’s at all hours.

13 year olds hijacking cars with guns. Robbing stores, and things like this.

It’s going to be a long bloody summer here in Chicago, and this stuff won’t help but cause a distraction and more.

Bbm.
Oh, it wasn't mayhem ?
What exactly does the outgoing mayor Lightfoot think it was, then ?
* sarcasm intended *

That's what happens when Chicago doesn't invest in them along with mental health services and victim support.

''A social media-fueled “Teen Takeover” in the Millennium Park area of Chicago Saturday night spun out of control, resulting in two people shot, 15 arrested, property damage, and police outnumbered in attempts to shut down the disturbance.''

''Large groups began gathering earlier in the evening, responding to social media prompts for a takeover. They quickly blocked traffic and mayhem ensued.

Chicago police said two teens,16 and 17 years old, were wounded by a gunman in the crowd.

One woman told Fox 32 her husband was attacked and beaten after a group of teens jumped up and down on the couple’s windshield. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Hundreds of police officers assisted by SWAT teams attempted to restore order as gunfire was reported multiple times.''

Their parents need to invest in their kids, that would be a start. Victim support is prob the best in the country, including financial support that a lot of places don’t implement.

Right on mental health though.

We have curfew laws, but where the heck are these parents? Had a good talk about that today with a guy who has lived in the city his whole life, and raised 5 kids. He proposed fining the parents for their kid’s actions. I’m down.

Something has to be done.

Chicago doesn't invest in the parents or the teens? Who are the victims and why are they victims? Who is in need of mental health services and why?

Well, I'd say both parents and teens need help. Victims of crime and domestic violence- Brandon Johnson has spoke of creating new Trauma Recovery Centers to address and help them. Chicago is enduring a mental health crisis right now and he wants to reopen all 14 mental health centers.

His plans sound good: Brandon Johnson for Mayor of Chicago

Mental health; absolutely.

Handcuff the cops, handcuff the judiciary; no. These kids face no consequences, and I’ve talked to cops who have arrested the same adult on the same day.

Mark my words, Chicago has never seen a summer like what is coming.

Self-investing and self-care would be a seriously good plan for everyone. Neighbors helping neighbors rather than waiting for political answers and help. I hope it's not too late. I hope a good Chicago will survive.
