I don’t think he necessarily needed a weapon to control them right away. If either one had sent him pictures, he could have printed one out and threatened to show everyone if they didn’t come with him.
I think some facts are established due to the family being asked to listen to the audio from Libby's phone.
One is that he had a gun. There is a pronounced gun print in his jacket pocket.

in the end we will find out

he had a gun
he had a puppy
he had a rifle in his pant leg
he had a go pro camera
he had a wig a hat and a mask on
he was crippled
he was drunk
he was with a woman and a man
he was 65 years old
he had bibles and crucifixes
his eyes are hazel
he was wearing a hoodie a scarf and clothesline
he was stalking, luring and sneaking
he weighs 300 pounds and is 6 foot five
he was hiding in plain sight
he came and went through the main parking lot.

Thanks again, everyone. I've read through and listened to tons of LE quotes and press conferences, and still can't find a direct quote from LE stating the suspect audio was in fact recorded before the murders, 'ordering the girls down the hill'. In fact, they seem to keep the video and audio evidence separate. I can only find writers, sleuthers and family who are surmising this, and continue to put this idea out there. LE may have played portions of the audio to family, but I can't find any LE confirmation of the actual chain of events. LE deliberately withholds key information, even to family, imo.
If this is such an integral part of the story, I would think it would be easy to find a LE quote stating this. But I can't. So, I'll keep looking.

I can point you in one more direction. In the Down the Hill podcast, episode 2, around the 30 minute mark, Sgt Riley (ISP press information officer) talks about the crime scene and how they processed it, note what he says about the bridge being part of the crime scene and how they know that:

The crime scene originally started where they found the bodies. Then after we found the phone, we realized it started at the bridge so we had to back up and bring that bridge into the crime scene. The original crime scene is a third of an acre. Including the bridge where the video was was taken - you got to remember, you had 400 to 500 people who started looking for these girls the night before, so you, you know, we had to deal with that - there were a lot of tracks, cigarette butts, you had spit, people would urinate...we had to deal with all that. All the leaves were on the ground. We basically had to turn every one of em over - that’s why it took so long.

Source: Chapter 2: The Day Delphi Changed - Down The Hill: The Delphi Murders - Omny.fm

So now you have the information that Libby's phone told LE that the crime began on the bridge; the bridge is where the video was taken and it is part of the crime scene (Riley). Combine this with the information that the south end of the bridge is where "guys...down the hill" was uttered (Leazenby). And the information that the girls are responding to the man in between "guys" and "down the hill" (victim's mother). And the information that the person speaking and the person in the images taken from the video are one and the same (Carter). I think the totality of the evidence from all these sources (3 out of 4 are LE) makes it clear that the man said "guys...down the hill" while talking to the victims at the south end of the bridge, but please let us know what other information you find as it's good to get more data points.

Great summary. Thanks. I also finally found an article closest to what I've been looking for.
ISP: More audio recovered from slain Delphi teen's phone
Police tell us Libby recorded the killer’s voice on her cell phone, telling the girls to go down the hill. Investigators say she hit record after he approached them near the Monon High Bridge.'

I really hope this is the last Christmas Abigail and Liberty’s families have to face without this monster being charged for their murders. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for them every day.

It is a scary case - give or take, the girls were facing a smart, experienced murderer and had the guts to leave us the clues. It is horrifying that the case has not been resolved yet. Wishing all the best to both families, and separately, to Anna, and hope that justice will prevail.

if the phone was preset days before.. you still have the same issue ( how did he know they will be there specifically at that time ) ?
its not possible this was agreed on days before when the sister took the decision herself right before the trip was made..

We don’t know that the decision was made just before the trip. They could have planned it the day before, or days ahead of time. Teens often make plans between themselves and don’t mention it to their parents. Then they mention it or ask permission on the spur of the moment.

I wondered if someone became angry about the re-set of the phone because he felt ghosted and began stalking the girls and planning to get them alone..mOO

We don’t know if all Libby’s SM connections from after the reset could be traced. For example the internet activity on the device used by the user anthony_shots led to his service provider - comcast - which in turn led LE right to his residential address. Apparently he made no attempt to hide his unscrupulous online activity.

But what about others? What of outgoing calls, contacts via apps, email addys? Were each and every one associated with a service provider and traced to a legitimate residential address and innocent person? What about proxy servers, phoney addresses, online activity using free public internet service?

Clearly LE is open to the possibility of catfishing involvement simply by making this recent ask for information. That happened for a reason. Perhaps that was the point, if not anthony_shots then someone else - they put the possibility on the table. JMO

what I find nothing short of strange
is that even after years on inconsistencies and contrasting statements ...most of you are still ready to follow wherever those pretty vague le statements lead .. even changing from a very thin young looks like justin timberlake ( recall the young sketch ? ) now we are back at a very very heavy dude again ..and there is more to come
it might just be me.. but I dont think BG in that vid looks so distorted that we can fit anything there..

In the case of the gun, GH said Abby's mother told him that when she heard the extended audio, one of the girls said "he's got a gun." And that there was a audible click of a gun being cocked.

It seems some dots are being connected and my very humble guess is that there was one person that lured the girls via social media and perhaps another that carried out the crime. One may have rolled on the other. Let's hope so. I think the girls were there to innocently meet a young boy and were completely caught off guard by the creepy bridge guy. I've heard stories from people involved in online dating sites where the photos used online were fraudulent. Fortunately, these people met their prospective date in very public places and were able to leave safely, but it's just so scary. Justice for the families of Libby and Abby!

It depends what you mean. It is clear that LE does not believe that Abby and Libby were lured to the trail.

It has been suggested (several times) that BG could have lured someone else to the trail but then that person was a no show—so he took out his rage on Abby and Libby. That's unlikely but not impossible. Maybe LE is simply trying to find out whether KAK ever asked anyone to meet in that area—whether he was familiar with that trail system.

(I still don't think KAK has the right body type to even be a possibility for BG, but I can understand why LE would need to do their due diligence and attempt to rule him out.)

There are all kinds of apps and games that use gps data, some share it with friends/family/public. examples: Pokemon Go, geocaching, Snapchat has had varying versions since before 2017

Agreed. Abby and Libby were up against the worst case scenario. A weapon, a creep, a bridge that offered little chance of escape, and a location with very little chance of witnesses. May justice be soon.
