Each night of the #Delphi murders trial, I plan to post a thread of 13 details or observations from the day’s events. I’ll explain whether my post is based on things I personally saw/heard (if I got a media pass to be inside the courtroom) or from media pool reports. #wthr 1/

With so much happening today, I thought it would be a good idea to start with a thread on the eve of the trial. So here it goes… beginning with my notes from this afternoon’s meeting between Judge Gull and media inside the Carroll County courtroom. 2/

13 Things To Know From The Delphi Murders Trial Today - Oct 171. The judge met w reporters ahead of Friday’s opening statements. Reminded us no cameras or electronic devices allowed in the courtroom but “You can have pens & paper & may take all the notes you wish.” 3/

2. Judge Gull pointed out there are 72 seats in the courtroom. 30 are reserved for the families of Libby, Abby and Richard Allen (10 each) & another 12 for media. That leaves 30 seats for the public—perhaps a few more if all the seats allotted for families are not used. 4/ #wthr

3. The judge intends for each trial day to last from roughly 9-6, but said testimony on some days might end sooner or later than that. Gull said she could end much earlier on some days if it seems jurors appear overwhelmed by disturbing evidence or testimony. 5/ #wthr

4. The jury box can accommodate all 12 jurors but not the 4 alternates. So that leaves an awkward setup where the alternates will be seated in chairs at a table that’s in front of the jurors. The judge said it’s “not ideal” but the best they can do. 6/ #wthr

5. Judge Gull said jurors were required to turn over their cell phones to court staff after they were sworn in this morning. During the month-long trial, #Delphi jurors will be able to access their phones to call family/friends only in the presence of a bailiff. 7/ #wthr

6. Jurors’ families can visit them on Sundays (their only day off) under court supervision. Jurors’ hotel rooms will have no TVs or phones. They can watch TV or movies — again under court supervision to make sure they don’t access info or media coverage about the trial. 8/ #wthr

7. Speaking about the challenges that sequestered jurors will face during a lengthy murder trial and the evidence they’ll have to consider, Judge Gull said “My bailiff & I signed up for this gross work. These nice people did not.” 9/ #wthr

8. The judge reminded media of her order that jurors are NOT to be photographed. She said new fencing/tarps on the west side of the courthouse—where jurors will enter & exit—is intentional to protect their privacy & safety. Thats where Gull & Allen will also enter/exit. 10/ #wthr

9. The added security measures, huge number of witnesses & experts, & extended length of the trial are adding BIG costs for Carroll Co. Earlier today, I attended a county council meeting where councilors added another $2.2 Million to their #Delphi murders trial budget. 11/ #wthr

10. That extra $2.2M DOUBLES the county’s original allocation & the new $4.3M trial budget will cost each & every Carroll Co resident roughly $200. Some county officials told me they don’t know if even that will be enough if Allen is convicted and files an appeal. 12/ #wthr

11. I’m pleased to report #WTHR was selected (in a random drawing) as one of 12 media outlets that will be inside the courtroom for opening arguments Friday morning. I am honored to represent 13News and to bring you courtroom coverage from Day 1 of the trial in #Delphi. 13/

Carroll County Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland in his opening statement Friday alleged that Richard Allen forced Abigail “Abby” Williams and Liberty “Libby” German down a hill near the Monon High Bridge trail and killed them.

The girls were hiking along the trail on Feb. 13, 2017, “a nice summer day in the middle of winter,” McLeland told jurors. A little after 2 p.m., the girls reached the famous high bridge. Allen, McLeland alleges, was following them.

He “pulls out a gun and forces them down the hill,” McLeland said, adding that the video that Libby was taking on her phone shut off around this time.

“Out of fear, the girls comply,” McLeland told the five men and seven women jurors. Allen, he added, “had the power.”

The girls disappeared, and their bodies were found along Deer Creek the next day. Their throats had been slit. Libby was found naked and covered in blood, McLeland told jurors as he choked up. Abby was wearing Libby’s sweatshirt and jeans, while the rest of the clothes were found in the nearby creek.

2. First witness was Steve Mullin, former Delphi PD chief & current investigator for the Carroll Co prosecutor. He showed the jury where Abby & Libby’s bodies were found on an aerial map shown to jurors. Also walked jury thru drone video of Monon paths used by the girls. #wthr
