IN - Couple charged with abandonment of adopted child after legally changing her age, Sept 2019 #2 *not guilty*

Oh so ICE investigated Natalia?
That makes me sick and happy. I don’t know how to feel about that.
I’m just gonna say, Thank Goodness for the Mans Family.

Believe it or not, that ICE investigation may have helped N, and changed the narrative. If the Barnett's plan was to report N for fraud, there would have been a comprehensive investigation. And perhaps even started the investigation into the Barnett's actions.

ICE agents are never portrayed in a positive manner by media, but they are professionals doing a job, and they are highly qualified. Most are former military. They see each investigation as a "mission". And they follow the law.

Very good points.
I am waiting for the one of the naysayers to tell us how you scam adoption agencies into adopting you out. The Ophan Movie came out a year or so before the Barnett’s did this to Natalia. I would think if she was an adult a con artist, she wouldn’t want to be adopted, she would want $$$$
Michael Barnett story makes no sense.

I have some running around to do.. will be back later. I spent the past hour reading through threads.
Questions if anyone knows:
1. Did the Barnett’s continue to collect $ after they abandoned Natalia? Kristine likes to say she paid her rent.. I wonder if that rent payment was made with SSI which is for Natalia anyhow.
2. Has the name of adoption agency where the Barnett’s got Natalia from ever mentioned?
3. The Florida Shady adoption how does this happen?! Florida has strict laws.
ETA: Natalia said Kristine had her call the cops and say she wanted to kill people and herself. Natalia said she put in cuffs. This breaks my heart. a 3 foot child in cuffs. Also, the Barnett’s claim the doctors said Natalia said she wanted to kill people. see; Natalia said Kristine had her call the cops and say she wanted to kill people and herself
I am sure Kristine is a great Mom to her boys but one of their arguments is Natalia has a sophisticated vocabulary.. STOP IT. You claim your son is a genius. Is he really an adult too? Don’t mean to repeat myself. This makes me mad

Oh thanks so much for posting here. I’m so appalled about the abuse she’s endured and continues to endure from a salacious public that I couldn’t even watch the Dr. Phil show. She’s been exploited and abused enough.

And the comments. Merciless. I can only hope she’s staying off the internet.

I’m really glad to see more people who have it in them to feel heartbroken for this child.

The Barnett’s are toast IMO

It’s bad when I WAS CONVINCED BEYOND ALL DOUBT given my admitted bias and bending over backwards trying to defend the Barnett’s. I was convinced prior to Dr. Phil.
Watching Natalia on Dr. Phil she proved she IS A VERY CREDIBLE WITNESS.
There’s no way the Barnett’s can escape conviction IMO

Michael Barnett seems to not like being employed... I’d bet his handing of her money will be his downfall

I don’t think so. IIRC the ICE investigation only stopped because the investigator died. The current investigation started due to a child attending adult classes.

Since so much has been discussed about periods, having a period at 8 or 9 is possible nowdays. So even if N. had periods while living with Barnetts, that wouldn't mean she was an adult. So what in the world made the judge to decide N was 22?

“It is not uncommon for girls to start their period as young as 8 or 9,” says Dr. Sara Kreckman, UnityPoint Health pediatrician. “This can be both emotionally and mentally challenging for girls this young, as well as their parents.”
When Your Daughter's Period Comes Early
The judge took only the word and evidence of the Barnetts because they had N locked up before the proceedings so that an ex parte would eliminate any evidence coming from N

I still can't get over Dr McLaren diagnosing her with the wrong type of dwarfism. We'd all been talking about her having SED because of his letter so I didn't really look into it but he couldn't even get that part right. The three most common forms of dwarfism are achondroplasia, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SED), and diastrophic dysplasia (DTD) and they all have very distinct features. Looking over the actual diagnostic criteria she has all the classic signs of DTD, not SED. There's no excuse for that mistake. Did he win his medical license in a raffle?? Or did he just never actually see her in person??

I don't think this Dr. M. is a specialist on dwarfism by any means. I am amazed the judge apparently used his claims at least in part as a reason to rule N. was an adult.

Bio mom confirms N. was born in 2003. Bio mom says she gave N. up when N. was an infant because of N's disabilities. And the bio mom is only 40. With claims being made that N. could be as old as 33, I guess that would mean bio mom had her at 7. Give me a break. Dr. Phil says N. agreed to meet bio mom so Dr. Phil could presumably bring bio mom to US and have them DNA tested to make sure this is an actual bio mom.

You don't need to be a specialist to differentiate between them was my point. It's quite basic. Especially when she has all the symptoms of DTD. The cauliflower ear, the malpositioned hallux and pollux, curved short fingers etc. Those things are not associated with SED. They have normal hands and feet typically. It would have taken him ten minutes to look it up and familiarize himself with the differences.

In my very humble opinion, I think that the Barnett's did not wish to see out specialists because a specialist would begin to talk to them about the kinds of interventions necessary for this child to live a pain free productive life. Natalia needed surgical interventions according to her former family the DuPauls. I felt from the beginning that these people did not realize what they were taking on and when it became clear that they would need to foot the bill for medical care and possibly have less money for things like trips to Italy or where ever they wished to travel. Having a child who needs medical interventions can be costly whether that child is bio or adopted. I keep coming back to how they got into the whole realm of adoption and what the agency said/promised/intimated that needed to be done for this little girl.

Bless the Man family because this could have ended very badly for this young girl. Thanks to the DuPaul family for coming forward to help clear her name. I feel there is little doubt as the actions of the Barnetts being unconscionable in regards to the treatment (or, better yet, the lack of medical and psychological) for this young woman.

Go Natalia. I am behind you 100%. She may have had other issues but nothing to rise to the level of changing her age and putting her basically on the street with no protection. It is a farse to say that KB cares about her.

I looked up and spent a considerable amount of time on his diagnosis & dwarfism types in general-trying to educate myself and was left baffled & perplexed and his diagnosis was a huge part of my confusion
I posted about it here long ago.

Doing the adoption privately left Natalia without Title IV-E benefits She would have been far better off had she went into fostercare - even briefly.

Isn’t it strange that EVERYONE that isn’t a professional knew instinctively & immediately she was a child the minute the met her?

People with SED could also have foot deformities. My point is, unless you are a specialist, you probably wouldn't be able to figure it out, or wouldn't know what these differences are.

I looked up at different types of dwarfism also. I don't think it's that easy to tell between different types. Here is the short article on different types of dwarfism. N. on Dr. Phil said she has diastrophic dysplasia and scoliosis. Scoliosis would actually be one of the features of diastrophic dysplasia. Definitely N's scoliosis got a lot worse over the years, since earlier photos show her spine to be much more straight.

The variations of each type can get complex but the three main types are very distinct and she is textbook DTD. The hand and foot deformities are the major giveaway as well as her ears. Matthew Roloff has DTD. Compare his hands/feet/legs to his wife (achondroplasia) and Jen from the Little Couple who does have SED. Google image search babies with diastrophic dysplasia.

They can but not nearly as often or as severe. Clubfoot is about the only one associated with SED I think but the huge space between Natalias great toe and the rest, her thumb and fingers are a textbook indication of DTD. It's not associated with SED.
