GUILTY IN - DARREN DEON VANN, 43, Gary, body count at seven, more expected

It makes me sad when bodies turn up of missing people and we never had a thread for them here. :( RIP Teaira and Christine
I posted the same time as you asked that only one was reported missing. :(

Ok.......I have a MAJOR request Bessie/Mods.
I just now noticed that this case is listed under 'Serial Killers' here on Websleuths. This case is not getting the attention it needs-it's too obscured via category. I implore you to move this thread into at least 'current crimes'.
Pretty please with sugar on it?
I have been bewildered as to why this case is all over headlines on every major news site but here on WS it ranks very low in user count. There are so many people involved and this is going to break wide open. I am wondering a bit about his background and timelines/geography/career history etc.
Thanks in advance for any consideration.
Respectfully,
Starry

That makes sense. Also, could it be that they wanted to get some unbiased opinions, expressed without being colored by: "He's in trouble. I've got to stand up for him." Or, "I always knew he was a rotten no-good so-and-so."
Sure. That certainly was a possibility once it became known he was suspected of multiple murders.

Did the family not report them missing or police never filed a missing persons case??? The below article makes it sound like the mom of Teaira reported her missing.

28-year-old Teaira Batey was among the bodies found over the weekend in an abandon home in Gary. She went missing in January. Her mother Gloria Cullom said she was mentally disabled. She calls her a sweet person who trusted everyone.

Gloria Cullom says she never felt like detectives were focusing properly on the case of her missing daughter. They put her off, she says, and barely responded to her inquiries over the months.

I started a thread there this morning b/c I couldn't find this one until I was googling to add more info I finally found this thread in a google search (then had the mods delete after I found this one). I thought it would have been under up to the minute in current events. I wonder if we could just have a link over there to direct traffic over here.

Thanks, Starry. Your suggestion is noted and appreciated. At this time, however, the thread will remain in the SK forum. This is where members look for threads about -- well -- serial killers. Any change will depend on the amount of information released in the near future. In the meantime, there's nothing preventing us from sleuthing the heck out of him.

With all due respect Bessie-even the detectives hesitated to call him a serial killer, much less name him.

Edited to add: Thanks millions for your encouraging, positive, compassionate statement.

'He was strange, he was weird': Suspected Indiana serial killer's marriage to a woman 29 years older than him revealed as he's accused of killing seven women over 20 years
By Daniel Bates for MailOnline and Kieran Corcoran and Associated Press
Published: 19:46 EST, 20 October 2014 | Updated: 21:26 EST, 20 October 2014

MailOnline can reveal that Vann used to be married to a woman 29 years his senior - now 72. He has also been described as 'weird' and 'strange' by that woman's son, who says Vann would often talk to himself and had other suspicious habits.

[...]
As the new details came to light today, MailOnline uncovered Vann's older ex-wife, 72-year-old Maria Vann, who distanced herself completely from his actions. Ms Vann, a mother of three, married Vann even though he is young enough to be her son. Reached by phone she said: 'I'm tired of talking about this. Darren Vann was my ex-husband. I'm fed up with this.

'It's been six years, he was in jail. I don't want to talk about it'. Public records show she filed for divorce in August 2009, due to 'irretrievable breakdown' and it was finalized the following year.

Suspect in Indiana serial killings has violent past
Chicago Tribune October 20, 2014

[...]

Indiana court records show Vann was arrested in April 2004 and charged with residential entry and intimidation stemming from an incident in Gary. Police alleged he threatened to kill a man in a wheelchair over an alleged $7,000 debt that Vann believed he was owed by his ex-girlfriend, who was then living with the man, court records show.

According to court filings in that case, the victim told police he saw Vann approaching his house carrying a red plastic gas can. The man told police he confronted Vann and asked him why he wanted to "burn my family, innocent people over a woman?"

Vann replied, "Give me $7,000 and you can have her," according to the filing. Vann also told the man that he had dynamite and would blow him up if he didn't give up the woman, court records show.

When police arrived Vann was "holding a cigarette lighter and was acting crazy as if he might light himself on fire," court records show.

For 16 years, Darren Vann was married to a woman 29 years his senior — a relationship that soured after he began going to nightclubs without her, his now ex-wife told the Chicago Sun-Times Monday.

http://breakingnews.suntimes.com/ch...by-accusation-says-he-always-took-care-of-me/

I noticed the age difference on the marriage record on Ancestry... I actually thought it could be a transcription error, since it was such a large gap. (Nothing wrong with that, for the record! It's just not something I see everyday when sleuthing or doing genealogy.) I wonder how they met?

This explains the back and forth between IN and TX I mentioned in a previous post:

The woman said the relationship soured around 2000 because “we just weren’t compatible” and because Vann had started going to nightclubs with buddies, she said.

That same year, the woman moved back to Indiana. Vann followed his wife back to Indiana, she said. While there, Vann worked at a casino, doing housekeeping, she said.

Then in 2006, the woman moved back to Texas. Vann followed, she said.

“He said he wanted this marriage to work,” the woman recalled. “I said, ‘I want my freedom.'”

I need for somebody a lot smarter than me to explain something. Last Friday is when all of this started. They picked this guy up shortly after the girl was killed in the motel. All weekend long......and even part of today , all they would say is they had a suspect in custody. They wouldn't release his name, wouldn't identify him, and on and on it went for the last 3 days. Every media report I saw said they had a suspect in custody, but the cops wouldn't identify him.

Even after the bodies started stacking up down at the coroners office............they still wouldn't I.D. him.

And the point of this secrecy is........????????????????

He was connected to something bigger. Fbi wanted run a back ground check on him

Wow. That is some seriously aggressive and unstable behavior.

This is crazy, y'all. The articles are being published fast and furious now, I can hardly keep up. All 7 murders we know of thus far are considered "recent". And he's supposedly been active for 20 years. How many other women did he victimize? The mind boggles.
