Records show he was arrested on unspecified charges while living in Cherry Point, North Carolina, in 1993.
Sure. That certainly was a possibility once it became known he was suspected of multiple murders. That makes sense. Also, could it be that they wanted to get some unbiased opinions, expressed without being colored by: "He's in trouble. I've got to stand up for him." Or, "I always knew he was a rotten no-good so-and-so."

Ok.......I have a MAJOR request Bessie/Mods.
I just now noticed that this case is listed under 'Serial Killers' here on Websleuths. This case is not getting the attention it needs-it's too obscured via category. I implore you to move this thread into at least 'current crimes'.
Pretty please with sugar on it?
I have been bewildered as to why this case is all over headlines on every major news sight but here on WS it ranks very low in user count. There are so many people involved and this is going to break wide open. I am wondering a bit about his background and timelines/geography/career history etc.
Thanks in advance for any consideration.
Respectfully,
Starry

Thanks, Starry. Your suggestion is noted and appreciated. At this time, however, the thread will remain in the SK forum. This is where members look for threads about -- well -- serial killers. Any change will depend on the amount of information released in the near future. In the meantime, there's nothing preventing us from sleuthing the heck out of him.Ok.......I have a MAJOR request Bessie/Mods.

For 16 years, Darren Vann was married to a woman 29 years his senior — a relationship that soured after he began going to nightclubs without her, his now ex-wife told the Chicago Sun-Times Monday.
With all due respect Bessie-even the detectives hesitated to call him a serial killer, much less name him. Thanks, Starry. Your suggestion is noted and appreciated. I need for somebody a lot smarter than me to explain something. Last Friday is when all of this started. They picked this guy up shortly after the girl was killed in the motel. All weekend long......and even part of today , all they would say is they had a suspect in custody. They wouldn't release his name, wouldn't identify him, and on and on it went for the last 3 days. Every media report I saw said they had a suspect in custody, but the cops wouldn't identify him.
Even after the bodies started stacking up down at the coroners office............they still wouldn't I.D. him.
And the point of this secrecy is........????????????????
He was connected to something bigger. Fbi wanted run a back ground check on him
Suspect in Indiana serial killings has violent past

Indiana court records show Vann was arrested in April 2004 and charged with residential entry and intimidation stemming from an incident in Gary. Police alleged he threatened to kill a man in a wheelchair over an alleged $7,000 debt that Vann believed he was owed by his ex-girlfriend, who was then living with the man, court records show.
According to court filings in that case, the victim told police he saw Vann approaching his house carrying a red plastic gas can. The man told police he confronted Vann and asked him why he wanted to "burn my family, innocent people over a woman?"
Vann replied, "Give me $7,000 and you can have her," according to the filing. Vann also told the man that he had dynamite and would blow him up if he didn't give up the woman, court records show.
When police arrived Vann was "holding a cigarette lighter and was acting crazy as if he might light himself on fire," court records show.
