I agree. Whatever the circumstances, she died in a horrible manner. One of my worst fears is to drown. Poor baby. Something is wrong in society when a drug addict has the ability to be the only person [at a given time) responsible for the care of a child.

Drowning or death by fire are my greatest fears, too, and I'm a PADI certified diver.

Is it society's problem that the father of Emma is a drug addict of the worst kind? I tend to believe it is the family unit who controls how to parent one's children. I also believe the courts are far too lenient on drug arrests as JSs court cases show.

I am an activist in my state for Criminal Justice Reform meant to assist Drug Addicts. It is our belief that rather than send a person to prison for drug possession; it is better to send them to rehab so they can rehabilitate their lives without the stigmas attached of being a prisoner on the outside. JMHO

Drug addiction captures doctors, lawyers, engineers, as well as the poor and downtrodden. They need help getting off drugs in a place, for example, where they're not subjected to joining a prison gang in order to survive. Their stories are shocking yet, with proper treatment, their successes are inspiring.

Criminal Justice Reform Should Decriminalize Addiction, Advocates Say - The Appeal

That is fine but keep the addicts away from children while they are turning their lives around. Children shouldn’t have to pay the price for the issues of their parents.

I don’t see that happening based on his and their (spouse/ mothers) past history. It doesn’t appear that LE was contacted prior to Emma being missing 24 hrs. Was their an Amber alert? Think the courts have to ensure he never harms another child.
I'm not sure that this would have met the criteria for an Amber alert necessarily, looking at Indiana's guidelines.

Imo,mom stayed with him after the charges earlier this year it seems.. but it's a whole different ballgame when someone's negligence/habits/whatever you want to call it results in the loss of your precious child. Marriages end over much less. There's still hope for the other children to grow up in a better environment away from JS. It's unfortunate that Emma doesn't get that chance, though.

Yet how many chances should an addict get? If you look at his record he has had multiple chances at probation and failed them all I believe. It reminds me of the parent who says I’m counting to three and starts with the 2 and a halves. Some people need the stark reality that prison provides or at the very least, our children need protection from them.

Maybe not re: Amber Alert but if parent is on probation for what he is on probation for and he takes off with my child, I’m going to try for Amber Alert (something about violent felon) and I’m reporting him immediately. No more BSing myself.

There are strict policies in place for those who choose to reform via rehab. I do mean intensive strict polices. No, they are not allowed to visit with families for quite some time and possibly up to six months or longer in some cases. They must be clean before being awarded visits by their family members. For instance, if you read the linked article, one such drug abuser was sent to prison for not asking permission to eat a cookie while in rehab. For the record, none of my immediate family members were ever convicted for drug abuse but I know several young people who were. It is for them that we hope to save.

If JS had been to rehab, according to the Criminal Justice reform standards, Emma may be alive today. JMVHO

Probation is not the same as a professional rehabilitation program. I have looked at his lengthy record. Can you show me where once he attended a rehab program? I may have easily missed it. In Criminal Justice Reform, the judge would sentence the offender to rehab. If the offender cannot abide by the CJR strict rules then, they go to prison. The rehabs also teach offenders a trade, if they don't already possess life sustainable skills.

Again, if JS had endured a successful rehab program, Emma would most likely be alive today and living in a happy home.

Thank you for sharing and I agree we need to provide help & complete aftercare services to those ready to take that step. I have compassion for the addicted people in this world. No one wakes up one morning and happily says, today I'm going to take the first step which will lead me to completely destroy my life.

But no child should ever have to live in a home with an addicted parent, ever. I'm not sure how Emma or her brothers were impacted prior to this tragedy. In fact, that was part of what confused me, because I saw the pageant facebook page for Emma. She appeared to be well cared for and adored.

If it’s meth the parent is addicted to, the child needs to be elsewhere. It sounds like recovering from this addiction is beyond difficult. I wonder how many people REALLY recover from it.
You deserved better, Emma. May you Rest In Peace.

One of my best friends and her husband are raising their 3 grandchildren who were all born addicted to heroin. The mother had been in rehab more times than I can remember. Failed rehab the first time, baby #1 born addicted. Failed rehab the second time. Failed rehab the third time, baby #2 born premature and addicted. Failed rehab a couple more times and baby #3 born premature and addicted.

Mom used heroin through all 3 pregnancies. Her parents had full custody of the 3 sweet babies until she finally graduated rehab, and she was granted a trial of having her children. It lasted for only 6 days because she got high on heroin and endangered the lives of her kids. It was only due to an alert neighbor that they were saved.

When it comes to the life of the addict or the lives of their children I will always side with protecting the children. MOO

That I do not know. It appears to me that he was continuously free to reoffend. And again, I don’t particularly fault those who love him, and I understand that he suffers from addiction. Hence, I lay it at the feet of the judicial system and the community that holds this system accountable. Something has to change.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, I just have a hard time blaming mom at this point. I do wonder what lead up to reporting them missing, any communication between mom and dad at that time, dad's mental state when he left with Emma etc. I'm sure LE is looking into all that. Just things that I wonder myself.

Surely they will take blood draws for analysis of drugs.

Clips transcribed from Press Conference

"She was located next to a debris pile. I don't want to get into too many specifics but yes she was located next to a debris pile.......

........She was located approximately 2 1/5 miles downstream from where the vehicle was located initially......

She was closer to her jacket than she was to the vehicle. Approximately half a mile, but yeah anytime your moving....moving waters are unpredictable. It would be easy to say yes we were looking for a person or an object in the water, you know exactly where it's going to be, but like I alluded with the strainers and obstacles in the waters, those cause items to be, you know stopped or hung up or slowed down. It's always unpredictable, you go off what you have known and dealt with in the past and you try to make your best educated guess on how to search certain areas and eliminate those areas and move on........."

Sheriff on dad

"He's (Jeremy Sweet) currently in the hospital. I did say earlier on today we did find a needle on him and paraphernalia, so he's been placed on a 72 hour hold so that we can continue to investigate and get our reports over to the prosecutors office. So once he leaves the hospital he'll be at Bartholomew County Jail."

I had not gone there. But you are correct to bring this up. I'm sure the autopsy report will have those answers.
Either way, it's heartbreaking.
Another "this never should have happened" story.

Because he has given two different stories, I'm wondering if they will find water in her lungs?

Drug Rehabilitation is not about taking sides with an addict over children. It is more about saving the addict in order to protect and save the family unit.

I am so very sorry to learn of your best friend's sad story regarding their child and grandchildren. While I'm not privy to many circumstances surrounding her inability to stay clean, sometimes they have enablers. She had to get the money in some way and maybe she sold her body for heroin as one of my former students did in order to supply her habit. She was middle class before she had a baby whose father was her pimp but we love that sweet child very much. Her son is a freshman in college this year. She did not help him get there though bc she was loaded on drugs almost his entire life. We always prayed for his mother's sobriety and now she is yet she was wasted for 20 years of her life.

There are failures in rehab. I recall when TWoods was addicted to sex and went to rehab in 2009. In 2010, TW checked into treatment again, this time for an addiction to Vicodin and Ambien TWoods had 4 back surgeries 8 years ago. In his 2017 arrest, TW was found asleep at the wheel ... Sadly, the athlete was found to have five different prescription pills in his system including Vicodin, Dilaudid, Xanax, Ambien and THC.
By the latest estimates, about 15 million Americans abuse prescription drugs and about the same number abuse alcohol.

His most recent car accident, crushed his right leg, ankle and foot that now have a metal rod, pins and screws. I fear he will become addicted to even more powerful painkillers that will follow a lengthy healing process.

Will Tiger Woods Play Golf Again? Doctors Predict a Difficult Recovery

Criminal Justice Reform programs helps those who wish to help themselves. Otherwise, most will live a harsh life in prison that are jam packed with others who mostly have drug related crimes.

If we can save one person, it is worth it. The list of those saved grows everyday. I wish JS had been saved from addiction many years ago.

Agreed, addiction has to be treated medically/psychologically. But, this goes to a much bigger discussion about society at large that we're not going to have here.

Pretty much everybody who should have protected Emma, failed to do so.

Not that it matters now. I had read that this picture was taken prior to her missing and in her moms car. FWIW.
