Was this some kind of hit and run?
rsbm
I don't think so. There's no sign of damage to the bike. It looks like it was unpacked for a "stealth camp". Just a hunch, since there's so little to go on, but I suspect he was found in the tent. MOO

Besides the hammer and the bike, NamUs has a picture of two novels, a Penguin softback copy of Don Quixote by Cervantes, and "Lost in the Dark", which lacks a cover. There's several possibilities for what the second book is. These are probably incidental, but for some reason their pics are presented along with the bike and hammer, so perhaps someone thought they had some significance to finding this person's identity.
The thing I'm seeing is below Lost in the Dark and above the top of the Don Quixote cover. There's what looks like lettering in quite small type. I thought initially that it was the spine of a book under Lost in the Dark, but now I'm thinking it might be the cover of a second book under Don Quixote. There's what looks like maybe a person's head, with blond hair? It looks to be facing the wrong direction to be part of Lost in the Dark, but I suppose it could be. My vision's not what it used to be...

Also, just based on the typography, I would doubt that's the history of horror. It looks more like the title of a Regency romance or something like that.

I've found four books with the title Lost in the Dark. One is a children's book about a boy who gets lost in the woods near a quarry where a young boy and dog died years before. Another one is some kind of mash up romance/biker/ navy seal/kinky book of a series by Ann Jensen. Another is a collection of short stories by A V Iain and the last one already mentioned here about an anthology of horror movies. The thing is his books look really well used and most of those books I mentioned were written in the last 5 years. I guess a book without a cover would age pretty quickly out in the elements.

I'm curious why there is no image of the tent. You'd think if the UID had set up camp albeit perhaps hidden in a copse of trees it would still have been visible much earlier and he wouldn't have been in such an advanced stage of decomposition. The blue plastic in the last pic with the hammer looks more like a tarp you might use on the ground.

I checked the weather from April to June in Indianapolis and in a nutshell April temps were below normal with a few days in the high 70s. May ran the gamut from the low 40s to almost 90 but mostly cool-ish and dry. June was very warm with a few days in the low 40s. I've got to say I have never found such a well documented review of the weather patterns for any state. Here's the one for April. Oh, if every state or province did this it would be fantastic.

When do the trees normally start to bud in the area? Foliage was probably in full leaf by the end of June.

To me, the hammer looks like it is covered with coagulated blood. There are maggots crawling all over it which would be unusual unless there is some organic matter on it. Is this a homicide?
Good observation about the hammer. I have no idea if it's a homicide. Why add pics of the hammer and books to NamUs but not the tent? I've found no MSM articles corresponding to this. The Shelby County government had no useful links and the County Sheriff FB page had nothing about it. The County Coroner's web site is a broken link.

This UID was discovered 8 months ago. The only thing I've read is that autopsy results failed to provide COD or age/race of the deceased. It was mentioned that LE stated there was no threat to the public which suggests either evidence of suicide or natural causes.

His remains were recorded as decomp with putrefaction rather than skeletal remains. It's possible bodily fluids from the decomposition leaked onto the hammer.
