All this time, "they" = Ohio? had his fingerprints from a previous arrest. Do we know what that was for?

Since his body was discovered at 10:50 am on a Thursday, I wonder what reasoning the detectives used for going to the facilities of an abandoned gas station instead of somewhere else. They were undercover officers and one of the articles stated their "unmarked" car was confiscated along with their guns. It wasn't like they were avoiding being identified as LE.
ETA: One of the articles said he was wearing brown work pants with UConn warmup sweatpants over them. That seems a bit odd to be wearing 2 layers of pants but no coat/jacket.
