Police looking for convicted child molester who left court during jury deliberations

“Authorities in Rush County are looking for a convicted sex offender who skipped out on his own trial.

According to the Rush County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson R. Griffin Jr. left the courthouse during jury deliberations on Thursday and never returned.”

Looks like he has been in and out of jail since the 70’s for various crimes, including child sex offenses, battery and voluntary manslaughter.

He skipped out of the courthouse during jury deliberations.

Rush County is due east of Indianapolis with the northern area on I-70.

Good question, backpedaling to check if he was in lock up around that time.

Edit: usual typos;)

Where was he when Libby and Abby were taken and killed ?

From the looks of things (thus far) he has been in the area. Some of the charges occurred when he was camping. (Outdoorsy)

“In a December 2016 interview at a Richmond, Indiana, child advocacy center, one of the victims, identified as "NM," said Griffin touched her while she, Griffin, her brother and her sister were camping, according to a probable cause affidavit. They had previously gone camping with Griffin in different places, according to the document.”

A jury convicted him of child molestation, but he fled while it was deliberating

He may be too old for Bridge Guy, but he sure has everything else going for him ? DNA ?...This guy is probably already in the Indiana Records System ?..I wonder where he was at the time of Libby and Abby ?.......moo

Yea, he’s 67, probably putting him out of the age range of bridge guy. But he does have significant history of violence, sex crimes against victims of the same age, and appears to like camping.

And it appears he was within a two hour drive.

I suppose his DNA would already have been in the system? But then again, I am not sure...
Those arrested on felony charges in Indiana will have to submit DNA samples starting Jan. 1

ETA last sentence and link re: DNA requirements for IN

I bet LE has already checked him out on Delphi.... Hope they catch him on this crime he has escaped for... Was he out of prison on the day of the Delphi killings ? Where was he ?......I have found nothing yet......moo

Thank you for all the info.....moo
You’re welcome! This guy needs to be caught.
Child molester convicted, remains at large

“Jefferson Griffin, Shelbyville, was convicted Thursday by a Rush County jury of Child Molesting, a Level 4 Felony, two counts of Sexual Misconduct with a Minor, both Level 5 Felonies, and Battery on a Person less than 16 years old, a Level 6 Felony. After his conviction, the jury heard of Griffin’s prior felony convictions that included voluntary manslaughter and sexual misconduct with a minor, and found him to be an habitual offender. The habitual offender enhancement can add up to 20 years to his sentence for the most serious charge.”

Did he run because he’s worried other charges could come or just because of the habitual enhancement?

He just ran from a life sentence basically....moo
Ha, yes there is that!

I woke up today with the thought, “why would anyone let their kids go camping with him?!” - But then quickly checked myself: He is an adult, he knows better, he should be able to control his self. - the bigger questions in my mind: why was he even released after his last conviction and is anyone helping him hide?

Same thoughts here.......I think someone is helping him hide. I cannot figure out why ?....Relatives ? First places LE is gonna look.......This man has one very bad track record .

Ugh. What a horrific situation. Hope he is found quickly as there is no telling what a monster like this will do.
Right?, he has nothing to lose now. His life, from the standpoint of sentencing, really couldn’t get any worse.

The misconduct charge was upheld, the habitual offender charge was struck down.

Jefferson Griffin v. State of Indiana

“During the trial, A.G. testified that while Griffin was taking her to an abandoned house, he stopped near some bushes along the roadway and threatened to leave her there unless she submitted to sexual intercourse. She testified that she was scared and consented to the act. The evidence indicates that A.G.'s birthday was August 14, 1981 and that the offense occurred on August 9, 1996, when A.G. was still fourteen years old.”

Just awful...and extremely dangerous. He must be found.
