Found Deceased IN - Kyrin Carter, 12, has autism, walked away from Best Western Hotel, Hammond, 15 May 2021

  • #61
My son has autism and has always loved water and it’s always scared me. I remember him 3 years old walking straight into the lake as deep as he could putting his face up and just standing there, just a small wave would have dragged him out. He’s always loved water, never been afraid and has given me a scare more than once. I cried after reading this latest update and begged him to never run away. My heart.
My kiddo is autistic too. My heart hurts for his family :(

I cannot even imagine the pain the family is going through. Earlier in this, the family said the grandmother, that was asleep when he eloped, was catatonic. My heart is just broken for them and I hope that they can recover him so the family has some closure.

There are a couple of his family members in that public Facebook search group that are saying there's no truth to there being video showing him go into the water. So I'm not sure. My head is spinning a bit so I think I'll have to see what news reports tomorrow.

They did say the search was called off tonight as he hadn't been found as of 9:30. I'll grab a link.

Residents join search for missing 12-year old boy, Kyrin Carter, in Hammond: ‘The ultimate goal is to find him safe’

“Kyrin and his family, of Kansas City, Missouri, were in Hammond to visit relatives for the weekend, and a hotel camera caught the boy running from the Best Western Hotel on 179th Street just west of Cline Avenue shortly after noon Saturday. Kyrin’s great-aunt, Patricia Duckworth, said Monday that Kyrin and his grandmother were in the room together Saturday when the grandmother dozed off for a bit. Kyrin left their room, first to the front of the hotel, she said.

When someone in the hotel asked him, “Where are you going?” he turned around and headed to the south of the building and just steps from the Little Calumet River, where the hotel’s camera captured the last image of him, Patricia Duckworth said.”

Oh no. I didn’t realize he was alone in the room with his grandmother.
I thought it was just his parents he traveled with to Hammond.
Please let him be found safe soon.
Prayers for his family.

My heart hurts reading the updates.

But, I do want to say the group on this thread is so compassionate and caring. I notice that and feel grateful for the kindness we all immediately felt toward this family. That really does matter, even when it seems like a small thing.

he’s been found deceased?
Not yet, they didn't search overnight but resumed the search this morning. I'm hoping they find him today and bring some closure to his family

There are so many conflicting reports. The dad said they surveillance video does show Kyrin entering the water. The news story I posted said that police made news crews move back, making the internet (and myself) think they had found him. But that wasn't the case. They moved people back so that the media didn't snap pictures IF they did and post them before the family was notified.

At this point, Saturday 5/22 at 10:15am CDT, Kyrin has not been recovered.

1. It is true they have surveillance video of him entering the river.
2. He has NOT been recovered at this time.

I am sorry for speculating.

I just am so sad. I expected this to be the case, I expect the same in the Ryan case in NE but it makes me so sad. This poor family, how devastating.
That’s how I feel, too, iamnotagolem. It’s so hard because his Dad so wanted it to be that he’d been taken, because at least he’d be alive. Prayers for Kyrin and those who love him. God Bless, be at peace.

eta. I posted this thinking he’d been found. Sorry

Oh how sad for his family.
My heart goes out to them, especially his grandma.
This is something that really could happen in any family.

Police continue searching river as boy's disappearance hits one-week mark

Police continue searching river as boy's disappearance hits one-week mark

The quiet path along the Little Calumet River in Hammond has transformed since 12-year-old Kyrin Carter went missing last Saturday.

Police tape, horse tracks, ATV paths, countless footprints, balloons, pink ribbons and glow sticks mark a week’s worth of efforts to find Kyrin, who has autism. The boy was reported missing May 15 after he walked out of the Best Western on 179th Street in Hammond.

Hammond police Lt. Steve Kellogg said investigations by divers Friday night and Saturday morning yielded no results, and that the search continues.

“The dive team was out this morning checking areas of interest and nothing came to fruition,” he said.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources dispatched a 16-foot boat Saturday afternoon. It is equipped with fixed sonar, in which the sonar range can be adjusted to wide or narrow spaces, said DNR Conservation Officer Terri Millefoglie.

Kellogg said public safety officials will reconvene in the next few days to discuss the next stages of the search.

Despite a recent news report from Chicago Fox 32 that surveillance footage showed Kyrin Carter walking into the water, Kellogg said this was not the case and no such surveillance had been recovered.

This past week the rear parking lot of the Best Western has been packed with broadcast news vans with towering antennas, searchers, four-wheelers and even horses.

Civilian searchers still held on hope and came out to the Little Calumet River Saturday.

“I just hope and pray Kyrin comes back safe to his parents,” said Sylvia Roberson, of Hammond. “It’s been a week. It’s so sad. I also just want to come out and say my prayers for him and his family.”

Kellogg said the daily search efforts will continue among Hammond public safety officials and the many agencies who have come to their aid.

TY for the link! According to this report there is NO video of Kyrin entering the water. Geez, why all the confusion?

This is truly a case of what is credible information anymore. The Fox32 article only mentions "city officials". What city officials? Lt. Kellogg was there when they began a focused search on one particular area of the river.

The family isnt always helpful either. The aunt at first said they have sightings of him at local businesses but weren't given access to the footage. Aunt also said the FBI was there. Then the Highland Police chief came out and said that there was no sightings and the FBI was not there. Information seems to be given out and people turn a little piece of it into a spin story for some reason.

But IMO, since that Fox32 article, for the first time ever, police taped off an area for the fire department to search the next morning. Interesting that after 5 days they would suddenly have a focus area if no new footage came to light.

I feel like he is in the river. But I also feel like the police are focusing too much on his entry point and not enough on the rest of the river. The little Calumet eventually dumps into Lake Michigan but there are A LOT tributaries before then. Not to mention the dams and levees put into place for flood prevention AND the changing depths of the river. It may be months before he is found.

I just hope we can get one coherent article about facts and not relying solely on rumors.

It has been a rollercoaster, for sure.

UPDATE: Body found in river near search site of missing boy, source says

Mike Clark May 24, 2021 Updated 5 min ago

HAMMOND — A source close to the investigation said a body was discovered in the Little Calumet River Monday night in the area where they've been searching for a missing 12-year-old.

The search had continued for a 10th day Monday, and the boy's father appealed for the public's help on Monday.

"As a father, we're out here looking for him," Leslie Carter said of his 12-year-old son Kyrin Carter. "We just encourage more people now to just get involved. ... Just try to keep him in your prayers and just keep the faith up that we can find him."

Kyrin disappeared around 12:30 p.m. on May 15 from the Best Western hotel at 3830 179th St.
