Girlfriend of suspect dismayed as court docs reveal details of Southport officer’s death

Hendricks Co Sheriff's office (finally) found his 2013 mugshot

http://www.indystar.com/story/news/...der-death-southport-police-officer/529601001/

"In a court document, detectives wrote that one of the bullets Brown allegedly fired that day in the minutes after the crash apparently found its way past the gap in Allan’s vest and wounded the officer in the heart."

WOW! I didn't realize the officer was wearing a bullet proof vest and the bullet somehow still managed to reach his heart. Everything about this tragedy is heartbreaking.

Also, the how's and why's of the whole thing is very perplexing.

Hundreds of people got a chance to pay their respects Friday to Southport Lt. Aaron Allan.

(...)

The visitation Friday ran from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Crown Hill Funeral Home. People came from around Indiana and across the country, with some officers traveling from California and Texas to attend the visitation and the funeral.

Many told 24-Hour News 8 they wanted the lieutenant’s wife and children to know they are here to support the family during the days, months and years ahead.

Just found out Lt. Allan graduated from my high school. He was several years younger and I didn't know him personally

No info on his background. Just that he was a good guy. I wonder why there is no info on him

Like possible gang affiliation?

Do you think news agencies are holding back, or investigative reporters aren't doing their job?

Could he have been "just a good guy", until the shooting??

Considering he had a gun and drugs in the car, I'm gonna guess "no".

Well, yep... seems obvious.

Are news agencies holding back and/or why aren't reporters investigating?

They made a plea deal. Death penalty was taken off the table; his bench trial is Feb 1.
What on earth were they thinking?

Lt. Aaron Allan suspect will not face death penalty

Edit: the news reported the trial starts today but his court case shows it begins Feb 1 @ 11 am.

Thanks for finding this article; I read a couple of earlier ones that stated they made that decision after talking to the family members but on tv this morning, they appeared to be very upset about how this is going to trial.

Lt. Allan’s mother Laurie Lowry:
“We were made to take the death penalty off the table because the mistakes that were made by the other attorney,” said Lowry. ” I asked why should we have to pay for those mistakes? That’s not what I want. I was told what kind of jury would we be able to pick from in Marion County? There’s a lot of people here in Marion County that would be great jurors.”

“We don’t want to cut him a deal because Aaron didn’t get a deal. He didn’t get a choice,” added Cory Allan.

The judge cut the live stream when it came time for the bench trial. He's back on live now so there should be some news out shortly on how things went.

What a scary situation! As soon as the shooting stopped, they saw Allan and rushed to give him CPR.
'Hero' nurse testifies ahead of trial for man accused of killing Southport Police Lt. Aaron Allan
Jason Dane Brown's trial starts Feb. 7
Michele Strack, a nurse who witnessed the crash on her drive home and stopped to help, took the witness stand Tuesday in a preview of next week's trial. She told the court that the gunshots sounded like "firecrackers."
...
Strack testified that another nurse, a man with a name tag that read Antonio, was also trying to help the driver when the shots sounded. That nurse, she said "grabbed my scrub top and said 'Run!'"
"Who was shooting?" she asked Antonio after they dove for cover.
"Everyone was shooting," he answered.
...
"The whole family feels that we've been blindsided by the state's change in this matter," James Allan testified on Dec. 3.

Judge Stoner granted the motion, noting on the bench that the "lawyers are in a much better position to know what the evidence is in their case."

Thanks for the news reports. This one that you posted updates the article each day.
Jason Brown's trial to begin for killing of Southport Lt. Allan | wthr.com
I sure don't understand why a drug test wasn't done on Brown until hours later. The article I linked to talks briefly about the test; somewhere in another article, I thought I read how many hours later it was taken
Forensic toxicologist Dr. Sheila Arnold testified she reviewed the urine analysis of Brown. She confirms the urine analysis indicated previous use of drugs, but she could not say exactly when or how much.

Arnold said blood test indicates what is available to the brain to effect actions and behavior. (A blood screen for drugs or alcohol was not done on Brown at the time of the crash and shooting. A blood screen is preferred in legal proceedings.)
However, in the first video in the article, it's disclosed that he had marijuana, spice and cocaine in his urine the day of the accident/shooting. In other trials I've watched, drug use is considered an aggravating factor in sentencing.
