The body of Marianne Weis, 52, was found behind a strip mall Thursday, around 450 feet from where Shannon Lassere, 58, was discovered stabbed to death in the parking lot of a dental office on Jan. 27, the local outlet Fox 59 reported.

Indianapolis police have not specified how Weis died — but Capt. Roger Spurgeon said both women “were killed in a similar manner.”

The women — both white and in their 50s — had signs of trauma on their bodies, officials said, without elaborating.

Interim police Chief Christopher Bailey said that while detectives have not officially connected the murders, there are “similarities in these two cases.”

“We’re here out of an abundance of caution to share information with the community,” he said, hoping “for information that will help move these investigations forward.”

Shannon Lassere, 58, was found dead on Jan. 27 and Marianne Weis, 52, was found dead on Feb. 1, both near a strip mall in Indianapolis, Ind., the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) confirms to PEOPLE.

The circumstances of the killings have a “number of commonalities,” IMPD said in a statement on Friday.

The victims were both White women in their 50’s who were “killed in the same manner,” said the statement. While the statement doesn't specify how the women were killed, Lassere's son, Justin Smith, told WTHR she was stabbed to death.

The two killings took place within a three-minute walk from each other, per the addresses provided in the statement. The area has some residences across from the small strip mall.

Authorities said there is no evidence linking the two incidents but IMPD is “taking proactive steps out of an abundance of caution,” per the statement.

”This is a heavily traveled area,” Young said. “You could have seen something, any suspicious vehicles, anything that didn’t sit well with you.”

While IMPD won’t say if the two cases are connected, Justin Smith will.

”I feel like there is somebody out here doing something. It’s not a coincidence. Something’s wrong.”

The crime scenes lie in the middle of IMPD’s East District Beat 62 where there have been eight homicides since the start of 2023.

All across the East District, from 46th Street on the north, down Post Road on the west to Washington Street on the south, IMPD has investigated 26 homicides since the start of last year.

Three have been solved.

WTH is going on? Scary.
Surely someone has seen something or heard a conversation that might lead to clues.
Did someone murder one of the women for a "reason," and then kill the other to make the 1st murder seem random?
Lock up your doors folks. Make sure your cell phones, etc., are all charged-up.

"She had left the house about ten thirty, eleven, Friday night,” said the victim’s son, Justin Smith. “I had a bad feeling in the morning. Got ahold of my sister and the rest of my siblings and then we got the news.”

So, left in a car? To go home? Were the women abducted and dumped in this block or were they traveling there near the strip mall and attacked there? Not too many details.

This quote is talking about the first victim, Shannon. Her family members say Shannon left her own home to walk to a gas station, never returned : 'She was just beautiful, in and out' | Indianapolis mother remembered after deadly stabbing

She then was found around 9:00 the next morning stabbed (according to her family) in the parking lot of a dental office which is across the street from her residence: ‘Weird and evil’: 2 women found dead in same area within days of each other

So she would have reportedly left home walking. But one early article about her murder asked residents to call police if they saw a woman get in or out of a car between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. near where she was killed. Family mourning after mother killed in weekend homicide

Fox 59 reports that Marianne Weis, the second victim, was found between a Dollar General store and a laundromat near the back of a strip mall and some apartments. Google Street view or satellite view is very instructive as to the relationship between these areas and the place the first victim was found. This is a more private or secluded area to leave a body imo than the first crime scene which is basically right by a busy road. It's also very close to residences. It seems to me almost as if both victims were on foot with their attackers rather than dumped out of cars but that's solely speculation on my part.

Their bodies were found on the same road, and each had ties to the city's far east side, according to police.

Police have not shared details about how either woman was killed, nor have they identified a suspect or suspects despite characterizing both cases as homicides.

At a Friday news briefing, which the police department said was held "out of an abundance of caution," Acting Police Chief Chris Bailey asked that anyone with information potentially connected to either case contact the department, CBS affiliate WTTV reported.

"We need the community's assistance to understand what these women were doing before they were killed that may help investigators move this case forward," said Bailey.

The first woman was found dead the morning of Jan. 27, in the parking lot of a dentist's office on Indianapolis' east side, according to police and WTTV. Just days later, on Feb. 1, a second woman was found dead behind a strip mall nearby. The victims were respectively identified as 58-year-old Shannon Lassere and 52-year-old Marianne Weis, WTTV reported.

Justin Smith, Lassere's son, told the station that his mother had gone out for a walk the night of Jan. 26 and never returned home, and suggested the two killings were not a coincidence.

"It's just weird that it is two different people, two different days, and it seems similar. It's absolutely weird," Michael Adams, who lives near the sites of the killings, told WTTV.

IMPD still asking for public help finding who killed 2 women near 21st & Mitthoeffer. 58-year-old Shannon Lassere found Jan. 27 in parking lot with neck wounds & pants pulled down. 52-year-old Marianne Weis last seen alive Wed. night in OB's Pub. Both killed in similar manner.

The two murders were connected! ARREST!
BREAKING: IMPD Chief Bailey, "This was brutal and evil what happened to them, but because they both fought back we were able to make an arrest." Arrested for both murders is David Hiner. Hiner was on probation at the time of the murders.

NEWS CONFERENCE: 1PM with Marion County Prosecutor & IMPD Chief as they update us on the murders of 52-year old Marianne Weis and 58-year-old Shannon Lassere. The women were killed days apart near 21st and Mitthofer 150 yards away from each other.

Man arrested in Mitthoefer Road killings

An arrest has been made in connection with the killings of two women on the city's east side, Indianapolis police and the Marion County Prosecutor's Office announced Friday afternoon.

David Hiner, 30, is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Marianne Weis and Shannon Lassere. Hiner was taken into custody Tuesday. Hiner denied his involvement when questioned by police.

Investigators determined both women were killed by “multiple sharp force injuries,” according to a news release from investigators.

Indianapolis police investigate a person's death in the 2100 block of North Mitthoefer Road on Feb. 1, 2024.

Lassere was the first to be found. Her body was located in a parking lot behind businesses in the 2200 block of North Mitthoefer Road. Detectives said she was likely attacked closer to the road and dragged roughly 12 feet by her arms to the parking lot.

Five days later, on Feb. 1, police were called to the rear of a Dollar General store a few yards from where Lassere's body was discovered after someone noticed her body and alerted the clerk, who called 911.

Both women were found face down with their pants around their knees, which police believe was caused by them being dragged, court documents state.

Detectives collected “a significant amount of video” from businesses in the area, according to the news release.

Hiner was staying at an apartment complex within walking distance of where the women were found.

Multiple videos showed a man and Weis together in the area behind the Dollar General on the night of her death. Weis, who was homeless, frequently stopped by a pub in the same strip mall. On the night of Jan. 31, she was seen leaving down the alley with a man, concerning other women seated on a back patio. The women asked Weis if she knew the man and if she was OK, to which she replied, "He's OK, he's family," and walked away, witnesses told detectives.

Detectives canvassed various parts of the east side looking for the unidentified man from the video and determined Hiner as a person of interest.

The next day detectives executed a search warrant on the apartment where Hiner was staying.

Police found shoes in the apartment that appeared to have dried blood on them as well as jeans soaking in bleach in a bucket in the bathtub. The shoes were sent to a lab for expedited DNA analysis, according to the news release.

Detectives needed additional time for DNA results before an arrest could be made. They learned Hiner was on probation out of La Porte County, Indiana. A probation violation was filed, and a warrant was issued for Hiner’s arrest. He has remained in custody since then, according to the news release.

Preliminary DNA analysis of blood from the shoes matched with blood of both victims, police said.

Shannon Juanita Lassere, 58

Shannon Juanita Lassere

Jan. 27: Officers found Shannon Juanita Lassere, 58, suffering trauma at 9:20 a.m. in a parking lot at 2200 N. Mitthoefer Road after responding to a call about a person down.

On the day before her funeral, Justin Smith remembered his mother as a caretaker.

“She took the simplest things, made them her priority and made it her love,” Smith said. “Whether it was cleaning, taking care of the kids, taking care of the dogs. It was the simplest things but she put a lot of love into it.”

The mother of four children and grandmother to 15 lived down the street from where she was found and had gone to the gas station for cigarettes the evening before her body was found.

“We thought she would come right back,” Smith said.

Lassere was hard of hearing, which may have made her an easy target for her killed, loved ones said.

"She was harmless,” Smith said. “They could have taken whatever they wanted from her, and she couldn't have put up a fight. Whoever it was is a monster. The disregard for life. I don't understand it."

When Smith realized his mother hadn’t returned from the gas station, he called his older sister and they started looking for her. When detectives said they wanted to speak with the family in person, they knew something was wrong.

Lassere had lived in Indianapolis since around 2004. She had been living with Smith for about the past four years. Smith remembers how his mother wanted to care for him like he was still a child.

"She would come into our room unannounced, pick up clothes, pick up the dishes and stuff like that," Smith said. "It was frustrating at times, but I loved every bit of it and I miss every second of it.”

Lassere was a mother to everyone she came across, including the black and white dog named Oreo that the family took in off the street. Over the years, she cared for neighbors and family friends, said one of the woman’s best friends Angela Johnson.

"Shannon was just full of life,” said Johnson, who drove up from Kansas City to support the family. “She had a spirit about her and was a beacon of light that drew everybody to her. She always wanted people smiling and laughing. She never lost that childhood innocence about her."

Feb. 1: Police responded just before 11 a.m. to the 2100 block of North Mitthoefer Road, near its intersection with East 21st. Street, to a 911 call about a person down near a back road.

Officers found Marianne Weis, 52, with traumatic injuries. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her deceased.

Officer William Young with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in the hours after finding her body, police expanded their search in the immediate area, bordering an apartment complex and strip mall, looking for clues into the killings.

Weis was known to carry stuffed animals, which she told people made her feel safe because she was living on the streets. Police found those stuffed animals and a black knit balaclava-style hood stained with blood in a residential garbage can near where she was found.

Family and friends of Weis either declined or did not respond to interview requests from IndyStar, but several loved ones posted on social media with messages that Weis was loved and will not be forgotten.

"Anybody who knew you knows what a true angel you are and now you have your wings," one post read.

Both deaths are utterly gutting. My condolences to the family & friends of the women.

And that quote, the women who noticed Weis with the person who would murder her, asking if she knew him & if she was ok...

From the mycase.IN.gov site. Looks like his initial hearing will be on 2/13/24 at 8:30am.

Just breaks my heart she could have been saved:
