IN - Mom Charged After Daughter, 4, Nearly Died From Severe Lice Infestation, Scottsburg, Apr 2021

Scabies is body lice, I think. It’s not terribly uncommon even in decent nursing homes, IMO. I attended a boarding school and one student got it. She let it go and looked like a cheetah with all the spots and entire dorm was put on lockdown. Back to this poor kid - yes, she’s very lucky she survived!
Scabies and lice are different, but just as awful and contagious.

She's still got quite a way to go, IMO -- I am not a doctor. How long will it take to get her hemoglobin back to a normal level? Could there be any permanent damage to this little girl? Again, kids are resilient, but this little girl is in a deep, deep hole, seems to me.
Prayers for her, her sister and their grandmother. Also for those medical folks treating her.
Dammit, this situation was easily treatable if it had been handled early. But we don't know what the living situation was, so I'll leave it at that.

Wait a minute - this is a recent case, right? Wasn’t there a very similar case maybe 1-3 years ago?!

No lice here, yet. I’ve heard that lice are becoming resistant to the OTC topical products, though. There are franchises in some areas that will comb/physically remove them.

Even if the mother didn’t notice the lice, she surely should have noticed how weak her child becoming, right?!

Yes, there was another similar no case, and the child, Kaitlyn Yozviak died

At your service! This is horrifying - but at 4 years old it's not too hard to understand. The home environment was probably crawling with them and they just breed without treatment. She was not in school so the neglect just continued behind closed doors.
Would not at all be surprised if there is residual life-long deficits from the neglect. I don't fault grandma for going to the pharmacist first- at least she did SOMETHING. And she did do exactly what the pharmacist told her- take her to a hospital.
The lowest hemoglobin I have ever personally seen was 0.7. Child was comatose and eventually died after mom 'treated' her leukemia with essential oils and other quackery.

I don't recall the lowest Hgb level I ever saw, but it was higher than 0.7, or even 1.7. The body can compensate for a while to slow leaks of blood, but after a while, there's only so much it can do.

She must also have been horribly malnourished on top of it.

There are some key points from various articles that are combined in The Sun, so dropping those here for those who may not have seen them:

Police spoke to school workers who told said the six-year-old had lice for three straight days in March before she then missed 31 days of school.

Her hemoglobin levels were 8.7 grams - which was low, but not critically low like her younger sister.

Child services removed the two girls from Shyanne and placed them laced them in their grandparents’ custody.

The girl's grandma reportedly had asked the mom how they had got lice so bad.

Shyanne reportedly replied she "didn't notice" and she was "just in a fog".

The grandma also told the authorities the girls got lice in November.

Their mom was "just too lazy to help comb them out and it would start all over again", the grandma said.

Mom charged after daughter, 4, almost killed by headlice infestation

I’m not excusing it, but it seems like the mom had a mental health crisis or something to fall into such deep neglect.

Also this tidbit from local tv clarifies a few details - thank goodness SS finally called her mother to take care of the girls:

Police interviewed the children’s grandmother during the investigation.

She told police that her daughter called her “to take the girls because she could not care for them” and
that one of the children “couldn’t walk and she would have to teach her to walk again,” according to court documents.

The grandmoth
er said she took pictures to a pharmacist. The pharmacist said “he had never seen an infestation like that before and to take the kids to the hospital,” according to court documents.

From the couple in that case who had planned to adopt:
"She [birth mom] looked to me that day and said, 'This baby is supposed to be yours. This baby's supposed to be yours. I don't want this baby, but I feel like I have to’

I hope in this case, SS’ called for help in time and this child can be saved.

lots of parents at my daughters school didnt address the issue (UK)

frustrating as they move from person to person very easily. the mother would have them as well as any of her boyfriends too. how can you ignore that?? the itching can be intense

i'm itching just reading this, anyone else??

Imagine having a blood transfusion because lice were sucking your blood? If you combed the little girls hair you'd see scabs or bites if it's that bad.

It's a huge PITA and you have to be diligent. So maybe the mom????? I don't know?

These suckeres were becoming immune to OTC treatment years ago. There were people in New Jersey so frustrated they used I think kerosene then used a hair dryer on the child.

MHO the lice situation not cool. Your babes hemoglobin so low near death?

. The girl also had a six-year-old sister who also had lice. Shyanne Singh's other daughter was sent home from school in March due to her lice. She has had more than 30 unexcused absences since then.

If a child has more than 30 unexcused absences, wouldn’t this normally be reported to CPS? Seems like this would be a red flag for neglect or abuse.

Virtual school has thrown all that to the wind unfortunately. Also, Indiana's laws are such that school attendance/ enrollment age is actually 7 years- so she is not breaking any laws by not sending a 6 year old to school.

I thought I saw one on mom’s forehead in her mugshot but maybe it’s just a pixel.
She’s been released on bail, I’m sure the jail is relieved about that.
The four year old needed four blood transfusions!

Agree -- seems to me that that would be the first thing to do WRT the lice infestation. Then they could better treat the skin problems caused by the lice.

I agree. This baby’s skin has to be in awful condition too, IMO. Not necessarily from lice, but from general neglect and/or poor state of health.

I note the father of the children, and his relatives, don't seem to be in their lives. It could be for a good reason, but it's sad that their circle was so tiny, so no one noticed what was happening.

It sounds like the mother is battling depression or similar, IMO. Very tragic when that nearly causes the death of a child. Hopefully the girls can stay with their grandma and the entire family can get needed help.

Oh my goodness, I have never heard of a case this bad. And I wish I hadn't.
People, be aware of the children around you and what they look like. Are they fed? Neglected? Speak up. Please. It IS your business!

And how -- some parents, however good they may be, may not see a problem -- any kind of problem -- until it gets very hard to control -- having to do with themselves, their loved ones, or all of them.

Some parents don't care, or somehow just can't manage things by themselves. They and their children need help.
We are all just human beings, and we are all just trying to get by and get along. And many, many ways of helping others do not cost a cent.
