Alyson Stephen, 23, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of Level 1 felony neglect of a dependent.

The death of 23-month-old Ryder Stephen remains an ongoing investigation.

The boy died after being found unconscious Oct. 26 in his home in the 2700 block of South K Street. He was pronounced dead three days later by doctors at Riley Hospital for Children.

Jacob Wootton, the boy’s stepfather, was taken into custody by Elwood police shortly after a candlelight vigil led by the mother last Thursday and booked on charges of Level 1 felony neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

The coronor found multiple bruising on Ryder’s head and body “which he stated was not consistent with falling,."

There was an active no-contact order between Wootton and Stephen after Elwood police arrested Wootton for allegedly hitting Stephen in front of her 4- and 2-year-old children in March.

Oh my gosh, hes beautiful

'Someone injured this child'

Alyson Stephen, Ryder’s mother, told police she woke up around 2 p.m. and her 3-year-old was already up with “a stomach ache and screaming bloody murder.” She said the 3-year-old woke up Ryder who started crying because his stomach also hurt and “he pooped everywhere or whatever.”

Stephen chased Ryder a couple of times to give him a bath “because he doesn’t like baths because he is weird and might have autism, but admitted he hasn’t been tested for it because he might just be a baby,” Gosnell stated in his affidavit.

Family remembers Madison County toddler, court documents reveal more details

Court documents show there was a no contact order between Wootton and Stephen, each having been charged with domestic battery before. A probable cause affidavit also states police were dispatched to the home and DCS contacted multiple times. In one police dispatch, Wootton was accused of carrying an ax around the house. During a DCS visit to the house, Stepehn said Wootton hit one of the children in the head with a toy gun and pushed her against the wall and hit her. DCS was contacted for an assessment when Wootton was accused of kicking the crib the toddler was in causing a screw to come out. DCS was also contacted when a child was found walking around for 30 minutes outside of the house.

Affidavit: Police interview 2 men who found child unresponsive at Elwood home

Jacob Wootton wasn't alone with his unresponsive stepson before police arrived Oct. 26.

Minutes before a 911 call was made, two men showed up at Wootton's door, according to court records

One of the men called 911, and the other man confronted Wootton after seeing bruising all over the toddler’s back.
