“People near the trail called police to report hearing gunshots around 6 a.m. Officers searched the area, but they initially found nothing.

Police received another call from a nearby resident about an hour later. A man spotted Bennett’s body in a retention pond while looking out on his apartment’s balcony.”

I wonder if he would have survived, had he been found on the first call? This is just tragic.

An arrest has been made in the shooting death of a Zionsville man who was using a recreational trail, authorities said Wednesday.

Court records show James Earl Hughes, 23, was charged Wednesday with murder in connection with the killing of Samuel Bennett. Hughes was taken into custody in Indianapolis and transported to Boone County Jail, Zionsville officials announced in a news release.

The suspect's parents told police their son told them about the murder. They checked him into a stress facility in Indianapolis where days later he was arrested.
