Gardaí are asking the public for assistance in locating a Galway man already missing for over one week.

32-year-old Stephen Cunningham from Ballybrit has been missing since Tuesday 2 November 2021 when he was last seen in Galway city at around 11pm.

The man's family and Gardaí are concerned for the welfare of Stephen.

A statement released on Thursday by An Garda Síochána read:

“Gardaí are seeking the public's assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 32 year old Stephen Cunningham who has been missing from Ballybrit, Galway since Tuesday 2nd November, 2021.

“Stephen is described as being approximately 6' 2" in height with a thin build, sandy/blond hair and may have a beard and blue eyes.”

Galway Beo understands a vehicle believed to be belonging to the missing man was located near Maam Cross in County Galway. The vehicle is reported to have been found approximately three kilometres west of Maam Cross.

Gardaí conducted a search in the area in collaboration with Mountain Rescue Services and the Coast Guard but the search was called off as evening drew in.

Stephen was last seen at approximately 11am in Galway city on 2 November. It is unknown what he was wearing at the time.

It is believed that Stephen may be in the Maam Cross or Clifden area of Galway. Gardaí and Stephen’s family are concerned for his welfare.

The family of missing man Stephen Cunningham are "growing more and more worried" as they head towards a week of searching for him.

Stephen Cunningham, 32, from Ballybrit has been missing since Tuesday 2 November 2021 when he was last seen in Galway city at around 11pm.

A post on Facebook from his sister read: "Day 5 in our search for Stephen…still no sign of him. Growing more and more worried.

"Thank you to everyone who has shared our posts and joined us in our search.

"We really need eyes on the ground now.

"Please look out for anyone matching his description in the Galway/Mayo area and continue to share his picture around."

Stephen Cunningham is still missing. Please continue to share his appeal

Missing Person Appeal Stephen Cunningham.

Gardaí are seeking the public's assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 32 year old Stephen Cunningham who is missing since 2nd November, 2021 from Ballybrit, Co Galway.

Stephen is described as being approximately 6' 2" in height with a thin build, blue eyes, sandy/blond hair and may have a beard/unshaven.

Based on investigations to date Stephen was seen at Gannons Filling Station, Belclare, Westport on the 5th of November (cctv images) and again at Dunnes Stores, Briar Hill, Galway on the 6th of November (cctv images).

Stephen was wearing a waist length cream/ beige hooded jacket, blue jeans and beige shoes.

On the 10th November Stephen's car, Silver Volkswagen Passat, 08G3521, was found at Bunnakill, Maam Cross, Galway, it is believed this car may have been parked in this location since 7th November 2021.

An Garda Síochána continue to carry out extensive multi-agency searches in this area.

Gardaí and Stephen's family are concerned for his welfare.

An Garda Síochána are appealing to landowners in the Bunnakill, Maam Cross area to check any sheds, outhouses or other remote buildings on their land.

Missing man Stephen Cunningham's shoes and socks have been found months after his disappearance in Galway.

Stephen's family have spoken out following the discovery and implored the public to help in their continued search.

Gardai have ramped up the search for Stephen following the discovery of the items which were found not far from Maam Cross, .where it is believed he could be found.

The family issued an update last night via Dunmore MacHales GAA that read: "On Sunday we found Stephen’s shoes and socks located in an open area between a small lake and forest not too far from Maam Cross. (Pin here)

"This has bought a renewed focus to the search.

"The Garda and their teams have been quick to react to our finding and the last couple of days has seen the operation ramp up around the area where his shoes were found.

"We are looking for anyone and everyone willing to search this very marshy forest bogland this weekend as we plan extensive searching of the area on Saturday and Sunday.

"We will be meeting at the car park in maam cross on both days at 9.30am.

"We would like to thank everyone that has supported so far and anyone that can come either day would be greatly appreciated.

"Wellies, rain gear, high vis and warm clothing is essential."

The body of a man missing for the last five months has been discovered in the Maam Cross area of Galway.

There was a renewed focus in the search for 32-year-old Stephen Cunningham after some of his belongings were found in an area between a small lake and Maam Cross several days ago.

Shoes and socks believed to belong to Mr Cunningham were discovered near a lake several miles from the area, prompting fresh searches by Gardaí and army units.

Gardaí and emergency services carried a search of the area on Saturday and his remains were found shortly after.

His family had appealed for volunteers to take part over the weekend.

Mr Cunningham was last seen at Dunnes Stores, Briar Hill on November 6th, last year.

In a social media post, Mr Cunningham’s sister Aoife said her family are heartbroken but thanked the public for their support since last November.
