Is Oprah being unfair??

I agree, what is even sadder is the title of that book "The Gospel according to Oprah"..... I remember when she was in Africa, doing her thing for all the African Children. (Wonderfull work, they do need a lot of help)... But you know what there are many many children in the projects in Chicago (Cabrini Green) to name but one. They also need a lot of help, they live in poverty, through no fault of their own. Drug addicted parents, crime. Where is Oprah? I don't see her walking around the projects of Chicago with her camera crews, helping those kids.... So when I hear that she walks the walk, or talks the talk, I tend to think, Yeah Right! only when it is bringing her accolades.
Well good lord Tis, she can't help the whole freaking world. I look at it this way...If she does one good thing for one person, then that is one less needy person in the world. You know, it is not just up to the rich and famous to help people. EVERYBODY can help. I get so sick of people saying the rich should do this and that....when the ones yelling the most aren't doing THEIR share.(This last statement is not directed at you) I think helping the needy starts with us doing our fair share. When we can say that we are truly doing all we can do, then we might have time to look around and see what others are doing. :blowkiss:

Check out World Vision, it is a great organization and my little bit helps an entire community.

Yes they do Narlacat. I have checked them out. There are so many places where a little donation can be combined with other money and many get helped.:D I really believe in everyone doing their part. I always check to see how much of my dollar goes to administration costs. If it is too high, them I pass them by.

Now don't argue with me, Narlacat. You don't like me very much and you don't know me! See, its not that hard to dislike :blowkiss: someone you don't know.
I don't agree with alot of what you say Jeana but that doesn't necassarily mean I don't like you.
I just don't think Oprah does anything to warrant anyone 'hating' her.

Just incase this was directed at me I worked with The families affected with Drug and Alcohol addiction in The Projects in NY for over 25 yrs. Still am involved at times with them. So I did my fair share and I saw a whole lot, nor did I say it was up to the rich and famous. Did I say that it was???? So why would you imply that I did?

What I said was that while Oprah Winfrey was off saving The Children in Africa there are children right in her own door step who need saving..... That is what I said. And I was not yelling and yes it was directed at me, or you would not have capitalized the word their.
Furthermore I don't need you sitting in judgement of me as to why I do not like Oprah.

I see nothing wrong with helping people in other countries, but I do think we should look in our own neighborhoods first. JMO

Hi Dea
I thought World Vision was over there too :)
World Vision shows you where your money goes and keeps you updated on your sponsored child and their community.
Some of the money of course has to go to admin but the majority of the money goes to helping people in desperate need.
It cost less than $40 a month, a little more than a dollar a day.....

You know when I was a teenager I called one of those places like "feed the children" or something, so I could "adopt" a child and pay like 30$ a month, well I was so TICKED when they sent me 2 pictures of these sweet little babies and I had to choose one, I did not go through them anymore. I thought that was very tacky...Dont quote me on the Organization I am not sure which one it was, that was just an example.

Agreed. And, by the same token, if Oprah doesn't like rap, she shouldn't listen to it. But, if she's going to use her forum to speak out about it, she should at least listen to what they have to say.
In this article, Oprah is quoted as saying about hip hop:

Speaking to DJ Ed Lover, she said: "I listen to some hip-hop. You know, I've been accused of not liking hip-hop, and that's just not true. I got a little 50 (Cent) on my iPod. I really do. Love In Da Club. ... Love that, and you know, love Jay-Z, love Kanye (West), love Mary J. (Blige)."

That's a pretty far cry from speaking out AGAINST hip hop/rap. I personally know of nothing she's ever said about disliking rap music. I just googled this Eve person Cube was talking about (showing my lack of hip hop knowledge) and Eve is a rapper that Oprah's had on.

However, that was not the focus of this article. The focus was that Ice Cube isn't getting on Oprah's show, and he's whining about it. But here's the reality- this is HER tv show and she can pick and choose anyone she wants to have on. I don't know about anyone else, but I no longer even think of Ice Cube as a rapper, I think of him as an actor. He made this statement in the article:

The rapper-actor (real name: O'Shea Jackson), 36, says of his 2002 snub, "For Barbershop she had Cedric the Entertainer and Eve on, but I wasn't invited. Maybe she's got a problem with hip-hop."

As far as Oprah being liked or disliked, well- to each his own. I don't watch her show much- but I think she does a lot of good in this world. I think she's brought herself up from the bottom of the barrel to the top of the world. Good for her... I like stories like that.

I guess I don't really feel one way or another about her. I certainly couldn't care less what she does in her own bedroom, or who she does it with. That is HER business. Not mine.

I guess I'm just suprised at the heat of this debate, over Oprah, of all topics. I'll get off my soapbox now. :truce:

I agree that she can have whoever she wants on her show, that is why its called Oprah....

The more I think about this- I think Ice Cube just did the one thing that will guarantee he will NEVER be on her show. He dissed her in print. Probably not the best way to get Oprah to have you as a guest on her own show. :slap:

haahahha.... I guess you never know. She may want to dispel this notion that she is anti-hip hop and have Ice Cube, 50 Cent, and Ludacris all on at the same time!

Um.... I doubt it.... lol :croc:

Yea I can see that.....Dont forget Kanye west........She had him on already I think...

See how much I know about hip hop? I forgot to name Kanye West. The only reason I know who he is, is for the comment he made "George Bush hates black people". I think it was at an awards show right after hurricane Katrina. Otherwise, I wouldn't have a clue.

While I agree that it is her show and she can do what she pleases, maybe she shouldn't be a hypocrite when it comes to things like that. She dont like how woman are portrayed in rap music yet she lives out of wedlock with someone and you have to assume she's having sexual relations with him. She has people on her show who are committing adultry, having babies out of wedlock or outright lying and patting them on the back for it. So how is that empowering woman? How is that upholding some morality she professes by comdeming rap music?

I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination but you can't have it both ways. Don't talk the talk if you can't walk the walk.

As for her getting the news out about things, cnn does it too. If her idea of getting something out there is taking rescue workers from their job to escort her butt around and showing someones dead family member on tv, then yeah, she's spreading her kind of news. Some of us found it disgusting and totally reprehensible, not to mention gut wrenching as we sat waiting to hear if our family was alive then wondering if one of those people could be one of our own.

She needs to go back to doing fluff, she's good at it. Ya know, you too can spend 500 dollars on a shirt and think it's a good price...oh and you all get one too, look under your chairs....gag me!
The reason I think she's a hypocrite about the rappers is that a lot of them had some tough beginnings like she did, and they made it in the world. She actually has a lot in common with them. I live near Detroit and I see that the rappers need to stay near Detroit to see and be seen to keep their fame and to stay in the trenches to continue their work. It goes with the territory. So, that might mean putting themselves in harm's way. It's a double-edged sword. She shouldn't have cut Ludacris out of the Crash episode like she did, yet she'll have start on that do violent movies like I said. However, I'm torn because she does a lot of good that brings tears to my eyes. Sometimes I love her and sometimes I can't take her. Like I said. Maybe we all can relate to her because let's face it, we all have our good and bad points. Sometimes the things we like least about ourselves, we like least in others and we project that. Like I said before, we might need to agree to disagree about Oprah. So if she's gay, she's gay. If she lives in sin, she lives in sin. She also exposed what was really going on in that New Orleans stadium, rape and such, which was really an eye-opener. You've got to love her for that. I love when she uses her power in a positive way. I respect that.

Sorry, on this I disagree. Oprah is a force of good in the world, she's taken her abusive background and turned it around. She does not advocate violence- rappers do!

But yet she'll have movie stars on who do violent movies? How is that not promoting violence? It's unfair to say that just about the rappers.

Hi Ellen

It's true!
What annoys us in other people is what annoys us about ourselves on some level.
It works like a mirror.
